Hi Guys,
Got a problem here in the daily that is beginning to **** me.
Before someone says do a search, i did, unfortunately it came back and keeps coming back saying the same thing to me:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4194304 bytes) in /home/calais/public_html/search.php on line 1155
Anyway, moving along. When i start the car she seems to want to die on me right away so i need to pump the accelerator to the point she gets a little warmed up. While pumping the accelerator enough to keep her alive a lot of smoke begins to blow out through the back.
Anyway, once the car can idle on its own it is fine to drive and is extremely responsive. So i take her out and begin driving. As she begins to get warm and finally gets warmed up she begins to play up. When under load it starts to struggle and simply won't rev and it feels like 4 or so cylinders are only working but if i am driving on a flat surface at a nominal speed she is fine. Once warmed up when i pull up at the lights or to a complete stop, she idles at around 1200rp and she then starts slowly dropping down to 400rpm and wants to die so i need to keep stabbing the accelerator to keep her alive, problem is when i engage 1st gear and release the clutch the car struggles and wants to die so i need to keep rev dumping the clutch to build up enough speed/ motion to get her going or else she will stall. It mainly happens down low or under heavy load and ONLY WHEN WARMED UP. DOES NOT HAPPEN WHEN COLD.
I replaced the CAS a few weeks ago and i've tried 3 different AFM's. Replaced fuel filter at my last service 3,000km ago.
I've heard maybe the coil is playing up. I will give that a go this arvo but other than that i have no idea what it is or what else it could be. Someone said my dizzy could be stuffed but we replaced the CAS and replaced the cap and button inside.
It does keep fouling plugs though. The only thing i've done different is pour fuel from a different servo as my local Mobil has now become a 7-11. Other than that no idea what else.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That could be one possibility, it could also be that you have a short somewhere in the wiring loom or the computer, water can short out the computer and make it do that, it has happened to me with the engine in my VL, the R33 computer got water in it and made the car blow smoke, water was getting in through the passenger side of the windscreen, that eventually damaged number 4 fuel injector and filled the engine up with fuel.
I got a second hand one from a Nissan Pulsar (SR20 motor) and that fixed the problem, I'm unsure if that has caused any damage to the motor as it blew a bit of smoke under heavy load, I'd have to do a compression test , etc to find out if the rings are worn, it could just be a blocked cat or something.

Thanks for your reply.
I will try another computer to see whether or not water has affected the computer.
I went to a few mechanics but they've all indicated that they will need to spend more than a few hours on it so i will be sure to try it.
I'll give the coil and try another computer to see if that helps.
Thanks for your help, appreciate it.

If that doesn't work your crank angle sensor might be on its way out cuz my VL had the same problem n thats what it was.

I had a similar issue with the CAS, then one day it just completely died.

I replaced it, not once but twice in the last 2 weeks just for peace of mind.
I even tried putting water over it to cool it down to see if it plays up but nothing still idles rough as though it has no AFM connected to it and once if finally fires up it blows a **** load of smoke out of it.
I've just about had it and even the mechanics i've taken it too are baffled but some of the guys on here could be right, could be a wiring problem somewhere.

Have you done a ECU diagnosis(fault codes) check??

Mechanic apparently did that...

Do you know what fault codes came up??

26-07-12, 00:14 GMT+10#10 I would definitely be changing the ecu to see if that works. I've known this to happen in mine before.

Again, swap the coil with one u know is good so u can rule it out.
While your on the ignition side of things, plugs, leads etc.
I would only ever get fuel from
Mobil, BP, and United. Everything else is rubbish in my opinion.
Fuel pump, fuel reg, injectors. Vl injectors that are 20 plus years old are pox at best, they might be blocked and not spraying proply intermittently, get them checked, but eliminate other stuff first cause this could be a costly guess if there not the problem.
Try an injector test light (plugs into each injector loom, check for consistent pulsing.
If you can get it idling rite, straight away cold or warm you'll have no dramas under load when your driving.
Good luck.

26-07-12, 10:50 GMT+10#12 Thanks for the info HTURBO, much appreciated mate.
Mechanic claims nothing came up, either that or he didn't know what he was looking for.
I will be sure to change the ECU and see if that works.
Thanks for your help Ceptor86, it just came out of no where once i replaced the CAS twice.

Tried 4 coils and now the car doesn't want to start lol.
After fixing the non starting problem a few weeks ago which happened to be a handful of problems in one big hit, now it is doing this.
Things are no going from bad to worse lol.

That is why i'm trying to fix it so i can give it to my mate so he can use it as a run around on his farm!
---------- Post added 26-07-12 at 15:23 ----------
Ok just got back from the mechanics.
He didn't fix it but he told me that the following is going on:
1. If the car doesn't start on the first attempt then it won't start for some time.
2. There seems to be a **** load of fuel entering and if it isn't ignited then it will just flood and it wont start unless push started.
3. There is plenty of spark and the crank angle appears to be working quite well.
Any idea what may be happening? Checked the plugs again and they were ****ed already. Difficulty starting in the cold but i'm using the factory recommended plugs.

26-07-12, 19:04 GMT+10#14 What type of spark plugs are you using(number on side of spark plug) also what condition are they in?? Wet, oily, dry, cracked, burnt out electrode(white part before tip)??
Best thing is to run the diagnostic check your self. Count the number of flashes, red represents 10's & green represents 1's. ie 2 red's & 3 greens means = 23.
Jot down the numbers & tell us what comes up.

I'll do it tomorrow and i will be sure to replace the plugs again in the mean time.
I will let ya know how many flashes come up and so on and so forth.
As for the plugs, they're the following:
NGK BCPR6E-11 as recommended in the book and by the mechanics. It's for an NA RB30.
As for the plugs i pulled out, they look pretty grey, the signs of excess carbon from the excess fuel.
Cheers for your help once again mate.

27-07-12, 01:01 GMT+10#16 If you can't get it to start first time and there is a ****load of fuel entering the cylinders your obviously flooding the motor, and that's how your fouling the plugs. Once you've done that pull out every plug as quick as you can and see which one's are fouled and how wet they are.
Hopefully you can pin point which one (cylinder) or more that it's happening in.
I would put money on it being the ecu or injectors giving you all this grief.

27-07-12, 01:16 GMT+10#17 Excessive fuel fouling would also explain most if not all of your symptoms
Hesitating start
Lack of idle
Fluctuating idle
Possible misfire
Fouled plugs
Blowing black smoke!
Hope you can sort it out mate.

26-08-12, 19:41 GMT+10#18 im having the exact same problem, black smoke, hard to start and wont idle properly. i checked the AFM, when i unplugged it (should it stall?) it began to idle at about 1400-1500 rpm then when i plugged it back in went back to idling rough.
Plugs and leads and fuel filter were done at the start of july and i have noticed the fuel pump is getting very noisey. Like you said, it drives fine at speed say 50-60 kmh then soon as i come to a stop, idles crappy. Once its warm it seems to be fine, ill run a few checks tommorrow and let you know how i go

03-09-12, 14:55 GMT+10#20 24 year old car. Process of elimination. A good diagnostic thread though.
Will help a lot of people having similar issues. Isnt Hturbos a good bloke always smashing in the info!!!
