ive got a vn 5lt block bored out 30 tho, come raceing 10.5:1 355 stroker pistons n crank in it. all balanced. and i want to know if the the standerd 304 manifold would be good enough to run a 355 stroker, or should i get a betta set up or go carby?
can some of yous give me some pointers on building the top end.
thank you

What do you want to do with the engine? is it a daily or a bracket racer?

Get rid of the standard manifold mate as it will be a big let down on what seems to be a decent package. Mate has similler package 355 same comp big hydraulic and runs harrop manifold with a 1000 cfm keeping it injected with good results!

30-04-12, 00:48 GMT+10#10 A friend had a straight Gas Research system on his VH. It's a 355 stroker, twin throttle bodies, big exhaust & the rest of the goodies.
A few pic's, not of his car but a similar setup. Some Gas Research cars have made more power than Petrol

30-04-12, 09:16 GMT+10#11 Dont go gas research.
Depends if you want to go carby or injected.if it were me i would go harrop or c.o.m.e manifold with a neat 750 on top or you could still stay injected with these manifolds

30-04-12, 09:45 GMT+10#12 come manifolds are junk unless the car is boosted
as mulkers said what do u want to do with the car my mate had a similar 355 only ever drove it a streeter still had the bannanas and was a weapon bearly ever got beaten
if u want more a track car i would say tourque power single plain with a 1000cfm throttle and keep it injected carbys are old school injection is the way of the future
cheers scott

30-04-12, 16:33 GMT+10#13 Does the engine have a cam in it?
Whats done to the heads?
What sort of valvetrain mods does it have?
IF it already has a cam, get a manifold to suit the cam, otherwise you'll only go slower.
If it doesn't have a cam yet, choose a cam and manifold that match each other and your needs.
If you're going to be driving to it to work everyday, use the standard EFI manifold, and a 218/222 @ .50, ~.500 lift or similar sized cam.
If it is for taking on cruises, and to the occasional track day, go something like a '286' and low rise single plane manifold,
If it is just for the track, look towards a high rise single plane with a 288 or similar, and valvetrain to suit.

30-04-12, 20:44 GMT+10#14 dont go the gas research.. its a pain in the ass because not many people can tune them and you get caught in the **** tryna find people.. my old man had one on his 454 chev for years without trouble, went pretty good and its still going but for dyno tuning it was gay to find people

01-05-12, 07:00 GMT+10#15 I would be looking around your local area as a starting point. Find out what the local tuners are using and comfortable with.
No use getting a shiney new Holley if no-one can tune it and everyone is doing EFI these days.

01-05-12, 10:42 GMT+10#16 Thanks. I want to go injection.
Heads are Vn stock at the moment
No cam yet
I'll have a shop around for cam n manifold n computer.
It's going to be a daily driver.
This is a good forum so many helpful people.

01-05-12, 15:31 GMT+10#17 Based on that information, i'd get the heads pocket ported / street ported, where they blend the bowls and throats, while they are off, just to clean it up. Simple, cheap and will show good gains without losing anything down low.
I'd use a standard manifold, although clean up the neck with a die grinder, this is the only part worth modifying without losing low down torque.
Also do you have a valvetrain?
If you dont have one yet, this is what i reccommended in another thread.
Quote:
LT1 Valve springs, new collets and retainers: $ 188
Gasket set $ 130
Clean up around throats and bowls with die grinder (aka 'street port') $ Free if you have a die grinder and patience
Match port manifolds to heads $ Free if you have a die grinder and patience
Lifters $ 90
Cam - 214/222 split duration cam, 112 lsa, .490"/.500" lift, something like those specs: The Wade 1522C1536B $ 220
Double row timing chain $ 160
Reconditioned blue top injectors $170
It probably wont make 400hp, but it will be very driveable and torquey, as well as retaining some fuel economy.
Workshops like Come Racing say a set up like this will deliver easy 12's in a full weight street car. VL's are a lot lighter than many of the cars injected 5.0's came out in, so that is a bonus. 12's in a daily driver street car that looks like a standard engine is nothing to be sniffed at either

01-05-12, 17:26 GMT+10#18 if its daily, just leave stock manifold on it. ring a cam place with your specs of rest of motor and what you wanna use it for etc etc. they will give you a cam to suit the manifold, blue top injectors and call it a day.
no point going big on a daily and if you do get pulled over and they open the bonnet, they cant say too much if it looks stock.
