hey guys trying to work out which auto to run behind my rb30 vl, has t04z with .84 housing, plan is to get a decent 9 out of her. car will probably only see 5000kms a year on the street so i guess id be best to base my decision purely for times rather than street ability.
Which auto and stall combo would work well for this combo and be reliable?

Yeah i had intended on using a glide for it, but after reading some info about the th400 i sorta got stuck as both boxes sounded unbreakable.
What size stall would the thing need ? id imagine it would see 25psi pump and 32psi on race fuel.
T400 can handle some big power depends on good the builder is, 2speed is a strong auto, but is a pig to drive on the street, that's if you plan to drive it alot.

No auto is unbreakable, or though it would be good if auto's could live a life time.

im happy to spend $5500 for box and stall but wich would give me better times? If there relatively the same in that department id probly be better off with the th400 since its 3speed rather than 2speed.
what makes powerglides a "pig" to drive on the sreet, iv'e heard numerous people say that they are fine as the final gear ratios are the same as say a jatco, you just have to shift once

i got stooched the first time by raceship, aka raceshift, from day one it never ran right, then got it done by a close mate, david @ trans master, he used to work from home and just recently opened up a shop in diamond creek, he has built many autos for my customers and not one has ever boomeranged.
Once he striped my auto down he actually showed me all the bits that raceshift didn't change alot of it was still original out of a running 202 from a kingwood,
if you want his number just send me a pm and give him a call if your keen.
When i say there pig, what i really mean is that they may drink abit more fuel?. I'm not against a 2 speed's there a great auto, but if you plan to drive on the street alot i don't think a 2 speed is ideal.
I have driven my mates 2j powered commodore a fair bit , its a 10sec 100% street car running a glide and i don't think you could want for a nicer driving car/gearbox.
You have to look at the whole car as a package, turbo size, eng torque/rpm,stall size, diff gears, etc etc, all these things play a bigger part in drivability/performance, much more than just the amount of gears you have.
Id go Glide

if youre traction limited a glide will be easier to hook up, they are more consistant at the track, and fit nicer than a t400.
You can use more stall speed with the glide before blowing the tyres off and its a bit kinder on marginal tracks.
If its a big heavy car with plenty of tyre id want the t400, in a light commy with normal(ish) tyres and big power, id have the glide.
If i absolutely had to have a 3 speed in a light car, id want a light gearbox, t350 or maybe a tri might work but theres plenty of blokes wholl take your money and give you a **** gearbox.
glide for sure, it will save u future headaches that "will!" come, the only difference i noticed when driving, need to rev slightly higher to get it moving in 1st, rest is perfect, it also felt same in my mates VL when i test drove it

A big stally is what kills economy cos the engine has to work harder to make the car move. I've driven mine with the glide through twisty roads they use for Targa here and its fine
I have a stock trimatic sitting in my shed, just trying to decide which box to go with and how much I need to spend. I will be making around 300rwkw to start with but would like a box that can handle a bit more for later on.
