I have noticed more and more people claiming they have a series 1 or 2 vl??
Where did this tripe come from??
I believe it is from the younger generation who were not about when they were new,or just a few years old(yes I have owned one from near new)There is not such thing in the VL paper work or work shop manuals,So where did this come from? The VL calais went through three different sorts of interiors,But these were just running changes.
So come on guys tell me where you got this info?
Cheers Marty

It pisses me off too Marty, Too many know it alls out there that dont know jack ****. They dont grasp the concept of running changes. All of my aussie VL's have been bitsa's. Holdens books were bleeding red ink during the VL's run, so a lot of cars just got what was laying around, especially late 86 and early 87 cars.

So very true Steve,People do not realise that GMH were in the sh%t,and that was all they could do.(our wagons are both 87)one early and one late 87.
Yes and both are bitsa's,The Brock more so, As PB was in the sh%t also,so to build that he just raided the parts bin.

I have noticed heaps in the non-turbo threads, mostly high school age Aussies with their first car. Its all series 1 and series 2 vl chit chat. Seen some people claiming different things even engines etc. I agree with what said above bout what ever parts used lying around etc.

The engine blocks did have running changed as well(turbo block),But again these were improvements, not a series or car change.

its simply become the eaisest way to identify parts, eg if someone said they have series 2 grey calais seats for sale, you automatically know what they look like. rather then saying they are from an 87 calais, which could have had either style seats.
i use it all the time, as do many people. that doesnt mean we dont know there infact is no such thing as S1 S2 etc.

But what about the third style of seat??

12-06-09, 17:06 GMT+10#12 Manufacturers make running changes all the time. There have been quite a few changes to the VE, most of 'em wont get noticed though. The changes are usually made to make manufacturing cheaper and easier.
Back on the VL front... there are two different designs of seat rails for the front seats. It sounds like my GTS seats are the third type, interestingly they have "VK 1/2" written in vivid on the foam. Looks like factory writing haha!

12-06-09, 17:16 GMT+10#13 Thats because the GTS is a trentham car, they literally put in what ever they could find, most of it was made locally. My Royale has a VH rear seat in it. Those kiwi cars were just thrown together.

12-06-09, 17:18 GMT+10#14 I'm no high schooler and am well aware of the no official S1 & S2 and that there were running changes to the VL series Its just easier that way, and any one who has been around VL's for a while knows this. Its easier than trying to explain what it is that you want usually as soon as some one mentions the series you know what there talking about! yes there are a few examples of multiple changes but usually when talking about the calais specific parts there is generally only 2 variations! and if it ****s you well dont read the thread! simple! I will keep doing it and I cant believe some one made up a thread about it??

12-06-09, 17:20 GMT+10#15 The first 2 styles( that Steve mentioned) had the solid bar at the back of the seat for the map pockets,The latter or last has the elastic top for the map pocket.
The first 2 were deemed unsafe for the passegers in a crash.

12-06-09, 17:21 GMT+10#16 Like psi wagon said its the easiest way to identify through the different ranges. Everybody knows that Holden did not actually call them this (not just you oldies), but we have to call them something don't we. What are they supposed to be called ????

12-06-09, 17:32 GMT+10#18 Hang on what do we call the VL when the SL and the berlina got the VN front seats??or when the black door handles came in??
What I am getting at soon there will be people WHO think there is a 1/2/or 3 VL,They were building some VL's while the VN was being built(goverment cars I think)
Yep it does give me the SH&TS but I love when other have some imput to state there view. And why not start a thead on it?
This is about the VL not a skyline!
Cheers Marty
ps glad it makes ya think about the other changes
If people are so schooled up,here'e one for you what did they change about the auto on the 6??

I heard (yes more hear say) that Holden's books turned red during the VK run and a fair few VK's were bitsa's too! I also heard that the VL is a greatly improved all round car over the VK even though essentially it is the same chassis.
I have heard VK's been referred to as Series 1 & Series 2 also. Some people claim the 'original VK' is a Series 1 and the 'VK & 1/2' is a series 2 but i am yet to see any documentation supporting these claims.

I guess this is a valid point as it can be a massive pain trying to explain what parts you actually want to some people... a lot of the time it is just easier to refer to it as a S1 or S2 part!

'Most of them won't get noticed' haha - just wait for 20 years and people will be referring to them as a 'Series whatever' and we will be able to have this conversation all over again

Sorry mate can't help you out here - there isn't a S1 or S2 VL so i don't really understand what parts you are after - haha

Or the VL Royale for that matter which i believe also has VN seats - or at least seats very similar!

Would that be the 'S1' that used a cable for the selector where as the 'S2' used a rod type linkage?
