hey guys, i was looking at putting two twelves in a custom made enclosure. unfortunately im lost for which subs to go with. i was originally looking at the kenwood dual voice coil black sub, as i had the older dual v/c titanium sub and it went pretty hard, but then i was thinking of something maybe a lil more quality.
im mostly hoping to spend around $200-$2500 on the subs alone and wondering ur ideas on which might go the hardest
cheers.

go to an audio shop and ask somebody who knows.

thats a big range.
what room do you have?
by "a little more quality" what do you mean?
wider range? more spl? more responsive?
these are questions you have to consider. go to an audio store and ask lots of questions.

I have 12 inches, (pause) Type R Alpines x2. looking to install them in new boot arrangement shortly.
They are known quality and produce some serious volume when pushed hard. I have these to run off 1000rms Alpine V12 mono. Looking forward to setting it up once I find the time.
It comes down to what you want. The kicker will impress you also just make sure you have the power to supply big subs. Nothing worse than a system where the subs response time is out of whack which really stands out in a poor setup system.
good luck. and be sure to get some pics up of the install (progress pics)

type r 12s are great subs.. although did u say u have 2000 watss rms??
might be waste of all that power
type r's are only 500 wrms.... type x are 1000 but arent worth the money i have installed many of these and havent been impressed...
personally if u have that much power id go with rockford power 12's or even better 4 10" type r subs like i have that will use your power perfactly and punch like hell and look sick

You won't be disappointed if you've got them in the right box.
Did you already have the enclosure made? Or are you going to smack it together when you decide on the subs?
Either that, or grab a couple of entry DD woofers. A few of SQL cars run DD woofers and they do great if you put them in the right box with the right amp.
Only downside is that theyre ugly fckers.

im custom making the enclosure ported box to look awesome and fit in the boot behind the seat flush with the boot lip, full custom install. im picking up my second vl this week along with the wood and carpet i need ive heard good things about many. how would 2 subs forward 2 subs facing backwards run? say 2 10s facing the cabin in a sealed box (small as possible) and then a large ported box housing 2 12"s facing the ass end sound?
now my only issue is a bigger turbo to pull around all the weight hahaha
boys i got a decent budget here so go wild..
oh yea ill release my sketches for my custom boot install. and ill definately be doing some progress photos.

Try to avoid using different sized subs playing the same frequencies because they tend to sound at slightly different times (milliseconds of a difference), and you will usually hear this, especially if you're chasing sound quality.
I know its basic, but its proven that a setup with subs facing rear end from the back of the boot (behind the rear seats) works best in most situations. If you can work with something like that you will most likely get the best out of your hardware.
I know a lot of people will choose to differ, saying that subs blowing into the back seats will give you more bass, etc; but its pretty commonly known for woofers produce better SPL results by firing towards the back of the car, which will then 'bounce-back' into the cabin.
If you're mainly after SQ in the cabin, make sure you've got some good full range speakers capable of playing through the frequency range. Also, make sure you set your mono amps subsonic and frequency settings according to your tastes so your sub isn't being forced to play at frequencies it isn't intended to.

I think you should ditch that idea. Mixing sub sizes and also mixing sealed & ported enclosures would be a nightmare to tune, and wouldn't give any advantage that I can think of.
You would get better results from putting your money into 2 excellent subs rather than 4 not-so-excellent subs.
Looks like you're planning on spending a fair bit, so do your research first so you get exactly what you're after - there can be a huge difference between 2 systems at the same pricepoint.

yea so ive heard, a bloke up here talked me out of one idea by talking about another sounding better because it was better tuned and it was half the price.. im pretty sure im just gonna go 2 l7 12"s facing the ass in a custom ported box? hows that sound?

28-04-09, 00:05 GMT+10#18 That's more like it, although I've read that they are more of an SPL sub than a SQ sub - is that what you want? Also, they apparently need nearly 2 cubic feet or more per sub if you're going for a ported enclosure, so it also depends on how much you value your boot space.

well i dont have kids... nor do i lug around mountainous amounts of baggage sooo trading off my boot space for spl would be nice!
yea the box i was looking at is about 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cubic feet depending on which design i end up making..
not sure ey most of the mids and trebles are pretty high sq i just want some moving air behind it to give the music a bit more punch...
