Can anyone recommend someone to regas my Calais aircon? Also anyone had it done recently wondering around how much it costs for a VL... Cheers, Oliver.

It costs stuff all to gas, VL's being what they are though, you'll probably find that also your compressor isn't holding pressure or something else has had it so it's another money train!

It usually costs $70 - $90

Heh yeah I got a spare compressor, I think comfort levels will pay for it if not I'll have to drive my wagon all summer!! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I do a/c regassing. If it hasnt been used for a while though it could get expensive. We charge $150 for a straight regas. Mobile guys may do it cheaper but they just drop gas in and they are gone with your hard earned before it even gets cold.

No, they originally had R12 which is now very if not impossible to get. Most are retrofitted to r134a which is the current stuff.

R134A refrigerant is not compatabile with the mineral oil used in R12 systems, or the seals. Eventually it will turn the seals to mush and leak. Many drop in replacements also will effect the seals over time. Technically R134a requires different Refigerant control device settings although with small systems like a car its not noticable R12 is still out there although anyone with a refrigeration licence caught trading with it is in in a lot of bother. It hurts when we send a tonne away to be destroyed knowing how many cars could be fixed. Mr 12 - What do you do for leak finding? as i'm getting sick of trying to find the leak in my VP.

VP Wagon,we use good old soapy water. Interestingly enough, back in the old days retrofitting involved flushing the system and changing all the seals over and new oil.A few years back one of the top guys in a/c training said its no longer really necessary. We do a recovery, change to retrofit adaptors,do a intial dump of r134a and run it for a few minutes and then recover and fix any problems, new drier and then regas with 134a.

Wouldnt you use the UV dye and infra red when looking for leaks??

mr_12Archived member
Yes,but its either had to be put in there previously before it came to us. It is now apparently illegal to fill with dye and send them on there way and come back later. If a vehicle comes in leaking,we test with nitrogen and soap the system up,9/10 we find the leak.We only charge with dye if the system is down on gas and we cant find a leak and system pressure when test doesnt drop.Ther are other ways but thats how we do it.

And if something goes wrong and your system is filled with Dye it makes a hell of a mess

hey guys, my aircon needs regassing and im not sure what gas it uses. is there anyway to tell if your system has been converted to the new gas? Does a conversion need to be done? A few people have said u can just change the drier and get it regassed with the new gas. Cheers
