What colour should I paint my engine?

Well the engines almost done and the next question theyre going to ask me is what colour I would like the thing painted. I was considering two options - Black and the factory Orange. The black is good as it hides the block and eccentuates the shiny parts on top of the engine. The orange is cool cause it gives it that factory look. What do you guys think? Heres a picture of the factory colour (mine would be obviously brighter and shinier) Here is the engine bay and a black block (old paint. Again mine would be richer and shinier) Note: engine has different rocker covers, will have different air filter / surround, has brand new dust covers on the inner gaurds, new manifold and carby so its all shmicko. Oh, the heads were used on a hot rod at some stage so theyve been sanded back a little so they have a bit of a smoother look without the casting marks. So, Factory look with the orange or go for the black? Got another option? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i reccon go with the factory look. are you just painting the block or painting the cylinder heads aswell?

I think orange will clash with the red too much. Black will look neat but hides oil leaks (could be a good thing!). Personally I'd go an aluminium or a flat silver.

i reckon black... like you said, it will compliment the shiny pieces... and i think that orange would be a colour that would clash with the red paint on the firewall/guards etc. just wouldnt look right... haha BlackVL beat me to it with the clashing colours comment... but somehow i dont think a fresh motor will be leaking any oil :/

This is a friends valiant. They also had a factory orange motor which is a different colour than the car. So to give you an idea of the colour clash. It focuses your attention on the engine block... which no one really wants to look at any way and detracts from the nicer parts. This is the motor I had in the corolla... I painted that black and it did well to show off the finer points of the engine bay. Good point about hiding oil leaks too. (Seriously, this things going to see 7000rpm its going to have oil at some point showing... touch wood that its not the entire sump contents) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

To be honest I was leaning towards the orange for the factory look... but after actually relooking at the pictures and the points people have raised Im probably going to have to go the black. Its good to get other peoples points of view.

*** that Brett, all my engines now run a basic format and come up killer! 2pak paint, block and heads in the same colour as the car, manifold and brackets, water pump etc in 2pak silver, then clear the lot. Looks **** hot and neat as... Just how **** hot? Here is pics of a motor that used to be in my car...speaks for itself and now a heap of people are doing the same! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

If I do that then there could be too much red in the bay... also I would have to try to colour match it... so there would be a slight difference in colour any way. That blue engine looks nice.

Matt black block with gloss black rocker covers?

I prefer the race / pro street look... Unsure about black rocker covers. I wouldnt mind some of those edelbrock ones again, they were hot.
