Hay.
I have been looking into getting a turtle, got all the lighting, heating, food and basking sorted but it takes 3 weeks to get a license, witch i cant get before Xmas..
Was wondering if anyone around Sunnycoast/Brissy had a license and would be happy to come with me to buy a turtle or anyone got a turtle they want to sell me?
Thanks.
Matty.
wait until jan and go looking around in the creeks, they are piss easy to find.
They like to hang in small rock pools etc. Had them for years until I came to my senses and realised how cruel it is keeping them in a small tank.
thats why i want to buy one..
1. Its been bred in captivity.
2. they are the right bread and not some asian fucker eating all the native things like they keep telling us on the news.
3. so it wont be a type the grows massive.
4. So it knows no better
the tank im looking at getting is 150Ls so its not that small for a 4" turtle. its 60L more then they recommend.
The store here has them for 99.95, good looking things but i just need some one that has a license, i dont care if i have to come pick the person up from a house in brissy and drive to the nearest store and get one and back home again, Supplying the boose for the trip and a few for the road..
1. A baby turtle will still know its in a *** tank.
2. They are baby turtle turtle not a special breed bread to be kept in a tank.
3. A turtle will grow to the size of its surroundings.
4. Its still *** cruel, no different to keeping a bird in a cage.
They are very easy to look after, just supply them with a nice rock they can get out the water on to "sunbake" rest etc.
A decent flouro as if you dont provide light their shells go soft and as for food they love pellets from the pet shop and get some cow heart or sheep heart from coles woolies etc freeze it and grate it up for a treat.
Just watch putting meat into the tank because if thery dont eat it it will turn the water off very quickly.
If you decide to get one from a creek the hardest part is getting them to mung down some food but ounce they take to eating they are a great pet.
Im not some kind of PETA activest I just hate caged animals for entertainment of humans.

5. I need 4 of them to train in martial arts...
Not hard at all.
Call NPWS pay your $60 then you are mailed a 2 yr licence. SIMPLE.
And for the record, I don't condone illegally catching wild Herps, especially with the increase of diseases of late...
OH, and for the record there is no such things as penny turtles. This was just a fancy word petshops made up in the 70's to sell hatchlings. Regardless of what species you end up buying it will grow large (dinner plate size etc)...
im going to get a license but i wont have it intime for Xmas.. just trying to get one befor hand otherwise ill get a fake one and say i didnt get one so she could pic the one she wants :P
Its $70ish for 5 years in QLD.
well the only thing i dont know about is the water.. is it just room temp tap water or what?
yeah man, where you live the water temp will be fine.
You can add some water conditioner for the chlorine in the tap water.
They are hardy little fockers, about the only thing they catch is a desease known as white spot which is easily treated with stuff from any pet shop.
Just make sure he or she has somewhere to get out of the water, and decent light.
the tank im looking at has a big "beach" rock area, its a proper turtle tank.
I was looking at the lights yesterday, a 5.0 would be all good for UVA and UVB? and a heat light.
Oh, When do them lights need to be turned on/off? no info on that laying around also.
If you send out your application ASAP you can call up in a day or 2 and ask for your licence number. They will allow you to do thid untill it arrives in the mail. You just have to make sure you put the animals in your record keeping book when it arrives.
You should use an aquarium heater in the water and keep temps at around 23 degrees. Especially when young and growing, while growing I would give them this temperature 24/7 for the first yr or 2. Once older they can either go outside (if you purchase a local species) or vary their temps coinciding with the seasons...
PS, Good to see you researching before actually purchasing, it shows responsibility. As for the UV lighting, match it to the seasonal photo period. Longer in summer & less in winter etc. Also be advised that too much UV is just as bad as not enough. UV is extremely important for Lizards and turtles, it gives them the calciums needed for strong bone growth (shell growth when it comes to turtles). Not supplying them with UV will give them deformities, and supplying too much also has ill effects...
