started my car without cooler pipes connected just to see if it was going to fire after puttimg it back together should it be running **** and rich as with no pipes?(afm and air box is connected)
no, it wont run very good at all, because the engine will be sucking in un-metered air. The afm will be reading how much air is being sucked into the turbo, but that air isnt being blown into the motor..

Mmmmmm, Im sure he said that the afm and air box is connected!!! Hence, the air incoming is being metered. The car should run fine, as if it was a non intercooled turbo as patch said.
yeah its crapola when u blow a pipe off and try and limp somewhere to pull over... the car cant build boost, blows a sh1tload of black smoke, and good luck trying to get it over 40 k's an hour unless ur going down a steep hill lol
Pic Below.......... AFM is reading air before turbo, turbo is pushing air into engine via crossover pipe. Engine has no problem with air coming straight from turbo after its been metered....this is how they came out the factory after all!

Ofcourse you would have an issue with this. The air flow meter has read the amount of air it wants to enter into the engine through the piping, but the leak in the piping throws all the calculations out. If the afm is connected straight to turbo without any air leaks, then no issue will arise.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
yeah thats fine but if the cross over pipe, or cooloer pipes arent connected the no measured air is getting used. Only the unmeasured amounts of air going straight into the t/b

no, he is asking about starting without the cooler pipes connected. So I am taking that as, he has got the afm connected straight to the turbo, and then pipe of some sort coming from turbo to engine.

well i'm thinking everything you said...but no pipe from turbo to engine(cooler piping missing)..?
as he says

surely no one is silly enough to do that. There would be no need to connect afm and airbox in that case as it would do nothing.

Oooooooh bugger. If someone is doing work on a car and doesn't know this, then maybe they shouldn't undertake anymore work. This isn't really mechanical information, its the basics of an engine. If this is what he means, then can someone who lives nearby, head around his house and check on all the other work that they have done.
Mate just plumb the afm up to the front of the tb and you will be able to drive it a short distance. The turbo can remain completely unconnected and the car will run as an n/a...
I drove mine like this (however without the afm, aftermarket ecu) for about an hour and a half to the cooler joint shop! No worries, it just drives like an n/a!
