Hi All, My vlt is currently in a process of a full engine re-build and looking at power figures around 230 to 260 rkw mark. Heard that the STD turbo auto trannies tend to slip quite easily even with a few light mods. A mate of my said that a STD manual mx7 box should easily handle up to 300rkw. This has got me thinking should a convert my std auto into a mx 7 5 speed manual or to a 4spd Jatco - 350kw Full Manual auto and take advantage of the current group buy? This will be my daily driver & l want to keep the car for a long time, l am concerned that the 4spd Jatco - 350kw Full Manual auto will be quite tedious to drive by changing gears & trying to remember to change back to first gear, does anyone have this type of auto? Please shed some light whats it like to drive a fully manualised auto transmission on a daily basis? Not looking at quarter mile numbers or any thing like that just to have fun driving my vlt. I dont mind driving a manual, if l decided to change to a manual what is the process in terms of advising Vic roads & insurance companies? Is there a cost involved etc?? If someone can offer to take me for a spin in their vlt with a fully manualised auto before a make a decision l would really appreciate it. I live in the western suburbs in Melbourne please drop me a line or call me on my mobile [phone removed] PM me Or email [email removed] Any feedback & advice will be really appreciated Thanks Sedat Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

the mx7's are getting a bit old and worn out now, in their day, they were a very strong gearbox, but not as good anymore. an r33 box is a better choice if you want a manual. when it comes to the autos, i think it would be wise to get one rated at above 350kw as that rating is at the engine, so a 300rwkw auto vlt would have closer to 400kw at the motor, so just something to think about... topics with simmilar info have been posted before so might as well do a search

KEAS rate their boxes in RWKW, not flywheel kw, so the 350kw group buy is 350rwkw. I personally will never own another manual in my life after going to a KEAS auto, its honestly the best money I ever spent on my car, and I can prob vouge for CMY747, OVL087 and a few others as well in saying they all think the same thing. Benifits over a manual are being able to footbrake onto boost, drop back a gear while still holding it flat, no time between shifts, faster take offs, more controlled wheelspin and the ability to upshift gears while peeling one off or racing, there is no lag with a decent converter, its slips enough to get you straight into your powerband straight away, and the thing I definatly love the most, NO MORE BURNT OUT/F UCKED CLUTCHS!!! Auto all the way for this black duck. 6BOOST

6boost, are you sure the trans ratings are the wheels? that quote is taken form the group buy thread. Quote: Hey Guys, Seems like there is a lot of talk about buying 2 spd glides and jatcos for their VL. I am a KEAS Re-Seller and i deal wtih KEAS for all my transmissions. I will post an exhaustive list in this thread with options and pricing. Pricing at the moment is RRP, ill see what i can do in terms of better prices depending on the numbers. Some specs and prices may change due to errors or otherwise. All kW and HP Ratings are for FLYWHEEL ONLY as a conservative measure. Some members are making the power figure at the wheels with no problems.

well for example and like most of the faster vl turbos getting around, my old car would of been making around 400-430kw at the fly wheel maybe more.. and if the trans was rated at 350kw at the fly, itd be well and truely stuffed Id think.

I had a full manual with a 4500 convertor... and loved every second of it. I dont think ill ever go back to a manual after having a decent auto. You wont forget to pull it back to first at the lights. Theyre just so much more crisp than a manual, stronger... ah the list goes on as kyle has listed!

Thanks for the replys guys, if your making between 230 to 260 kw atw which type of 4speed full manualised auto would you get? Im confused are these autos rated at the flywheel or rear wheel 1/Stage III Semi-Automatic, MAX 15PSI 2/4spd Jatco - 220kw Full Manual 3/4spd Jatco - 350kw Full Manual Cheers Sedat

I've got a manual vlt and the mx7 is a horrible gearbox. It's like driving a truck or something. I don't know what the 33 box is like but their supposed to be alot smoother than the mx7

I concur ijd, mine was origianlly factory MX7 but I kept getting destroyed by Auto cars with converters even though I had way more power, the MX7 for what ever reason just doesnt operate like a good jap box does in say an SR or similar...i'd say the 33 box would be sweet especially with a short shifter.

Im loving the 33, responsive, direct and a pleasure to operate. That said im still struggling with an NA, If i was making big power I'd probably want a worked auto. But as has been stated If your not intending to race it the manual might be the sensible option (although there isn't really a whole lot thats sensible about a VL).

auto for me too but if you do want a cogger then the 33box is way more nicer to drive than a mx7 , and thats coming from someone (me) who doesnt like manuaul cars Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I hadn't actually read that thread, however I've known paul for a few years now and he had always told me it was rwkw, if it is in fact flywheel KW, it must be very conservative, as I have a 400kw box in my car and I'm about to put 800hp through it and paul doesnt think it should have any problems, and many friends and customers from this forum have the 350kw box and are putting at least 400kw through them in full weight cars, some with 10 000k's on them without a hitch. You will def need the 350kw 4 speed for the power you want, the next one under that is only a base modelthat would handle maybe 300rwhp but is full manual. The 350kw box would be happy running high 10's. 6BOOST

problems with manuals are u NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DRIVE! Driving manual is an art form. Not something someone car really teach u, just losts of practise and many gearboxes to break till u get it right. Can u Flat changing etc? If not good luck running a descent number. A perfect example is all of these matook cars running low 10s. This Sam bloke runs 10.2 in a manual, y dont the owners have a crack at it? Also there is nothing wrong with an MX7, just the driver. however no doubt the rb25 manual is better being newer technology

Manualised auto all the way! We just put a KEAS T400 with 3k stall behind a strong 304 and it is sensational! And very easy to drive! Kyle, Paul does rate the boxes in rwkw all the time!

Awesome awesome Trans. And Kyle from what Paul said to me, the boxes are rated in KW at the Fly, but I believe it is a bit conservative Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
