Hey fellas, I’m helping my mate convert his drum brakes to disc. Where using the existing drum diff centre and just replacing the ends of the diff (ie. taking drum assembly off and replacing it with disc brake stuff) It was all smooth sailing until we put the axle back in with the disc assembly. For some weird reason, the axle is loose, (ie. it has to much play in it, slides in and out about 6mm). Before, with the drum brakes the axle only had about 1mm of play in it. Any ideas as to what is causing it??? Is it meant to have this much play in it??? Any help would be greatly appreciated Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

You need new axle seals or something like that I think

You will need the axles from the disc setup or will have to get the seal setup for disc and redo your axles.

Thanks for that guys, My mate got some rear disc axles from a wrecker this morning, we put one side in and there is still some play in it, but only about 2mm of play. So its an improvement from the drum axle that had about 5mm of play in it. So is 2mm too much play???? ...or is it meant to be like that??? I'm assuming its meant to be about 0-1mm of play (minimum)??? Any suggestions ??? Thanks Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I have been exactly in the same situation as you. You need to change the oil seals to disc brake type, they are wider to suit the wider backing plates, remember that the oil seal actually goes through the backing plate and is squeezed by the bearing plate on the axle. The is no special spacers and the drum and disc axles are exactly the same, the sealing surfaces are the same as well. 2mm is too much, there should be no play, also remember to change your master cyl.

carcrazy: Do u mean the black rubber oil seals on the axle? ...or something else? Cos, were using a disc axle now and still get 2mm of play. (I thought that since using a disc axle there would be no need to change any seals on it) confused Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yes disc seal, if your using old seals then there probally will be a little play.

do you actually need to change the axles or will the drum axles work?

My mate is wrecking a VN and he said I can have the whole diff with discs, I was wondering if I can use the discs off that to put on my VL plus buying the disc brake seal kit.

The vn backing plates have the hand brake cable mountings exactly opposite to the vl setup I cant quite remember but i think the vl is on top and the vn is underneath.

Factory setup is like 1mm or so. can't remember what the figure is, but its stupidly loose. Like you should be able to pull on the axle and feel it move. If there were two opposed bearings in each end like the front hubs, then there would be no free-play.

OK so let me get this right all i would need to change over my Drum on the rear to Disc is: The rear Disc assembly (Does this need to be off a VL that had rear disc) master cyl (To what a 1 or whatever some peeps mention) oil seals to disc brake type (where could i source these and how much ??) Maybe some new brake lines to the back ?? Would i have to even change the Hand Brake cause as far as i know even the Calais had a Drum Hand Brake. ?? anything else as i know Sweet FA bout brake setups and part/costs. well actually most meachanics lol. Also could i attempt this myself ? Would Be Greatly Appreicated Wolfy Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

So if you put discs on drum axels they don't stick out a few cm's?? That's what I always heard and thats why I always avoided getting just discs and calipers etc. But if it can be done and doesn't stick out any further then I've got my discs and calipers lined up already and it will be done asap, as rear discs are the only thing holding me back.

In regards to the problem i had with my mates car which is in the first post... The drum diff has a 3mm lip on each end of the diff. If u place the disc setup straight onto the diff you will have 3mm of play as my mate did. Therefore, just carefully grind off that 3mm lip and there will be know play at all For the conversion (Drum to disc) we used the following... 1. The existing drum diff centre 2. The same brake lines which are on the drum diff (You have to carefully bend the ends. Make sure you don't crease the brake lines when u bend it or else it will stop the fluid from flowing freely 3. Same handbrake cable 4. 2x rear disc brake axles (as stated above, the drum axles have slightly different oil seals so u need to use disc axles. OR, you car just get a "disc seal kit" fitted to drum axles. Will cost about $60-$70 per axle) 5. Calipers, disc rotors and the disc brake backing plate. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

The handbrake cable which connects to the drum brakes, connects up the same way onto the disc assembly. Just have to tighten it a bit more.

I have found that this can cause problems if the car is lowered. Basically in my car the handbrake has to be adjusted way off for me to drive it because the body roll was trying to put the handbrake ON for the wheel on the outside of the corner (where the weight rolls to). hence a big clunk clunk clunk around heavy corners. The problem now is that the handbrake has to be yanked right up high to stop the car on a hill etc. Try to stick to original VL rear disc setups, otherwise perhaps some mods need to be made to VN rear disc setups.(ie handbrake linkage using a diff mounted yoke etc) Tell me if anyone thinks i'm way off track.. maybe then I can be sure as to what to do to fix my car.
