The world's quickest and fastest Nissan, the vaunted twin-turbo HKS 180SX that four years ago made a blistering 7.27-second 189-mph quarter-mile pass at Sendai Raceway in Japan, will make its first run on U.S. soil this weekend in Englishtown. Tetsuya Kawasaki, one of Japan's most popular racers, will be piloting the seven-year-old 180SX in exhibition passes only
The 180SX, with its familiar HKS splash graphics, is powered by a RB26 DETT Skyline engine that produces approximately 1,300 horsepower 8O at 9,000 rpm and 672 ft./lbs. of torque at 7,000 rpm. The powerplant features HKS H-form cross section connecting rods, an HKS full-counter crank, and forged HKS pistons. HKS cams, head gasket, twin GT3037 turbos, Racing Wastegate and Intercooler feed power to an air shifted Liberty five-speed.
Tetsuya Kawasaki (driver of the 180sx), was the burnout king of the event, made it clear the Nissan did more than granulate rubber as it blasted to a best-ever 7.18 8O at 190.62 mph to take the top spot
We were impressed with the Nissan's ET turbos. The four-cylinder single turbo's 7.18 was right on the tail of the Celica's best effort of 7.10 and the Celica had twice the pistons and twice the turbos. The HKS 180SX was definitely the star of the event. Note the Celica was V8 Twin Turbo to be able to achieve the time of 7.10, and the ET was single turbo!! 8O , it wasnt far behind  .
Go the ET turbos  , Nissan has once again proven to be the king of Muscle and speed 8) . Hence we love the VLTs so much...... because they are a hybrid car Aussie/Japanese. and VLTs are cheap performance cars, easy to mod with big power outputs that the average Aussie guy can afford  !

Sorry, I'm disputing.
Eddy Tassone's 383 Twin Turbo HOLDEN V8 (no, not a Nissan) made 1,376 proven (not "approximate" horsepower) at the treads at Summernats without Nitrous. And it's not made by a super-rich company like HKS, but here in good ol' WA by Active Automotive. I think it runs low 8s.
Not bad for an engine with them crappy "Pushrod" thingies you import peeps love to diss

Yeah, I actually posted that fact yesterday but for some reason my post didnt appear.
As far as the "RB26DETT still the undisputed King of Power ~1300HP" comment/title goes, Id say that a Top Fuel rail car that has a power rating of over 6000hp and does the 1/4 mile in just over 4 seconds would be the un-disputed king of power. Oh well, maybe thats just me.
(not baggin you personnally jasoncngo, just taking a swipe at whoever wrote the article)

..compare engine sizes though - of course its going to be easier to get more power from a bigger engine. Try doing it with 2.6-3.0 litres like the RB's do. If the engines were compared equally the V8's should be putting out twice the power of the RB26? 8O
...as for top fuelers - they dont really resemble a production engine at all.

lets just leave it that rb26dett are powerfull

Sure they do, they have cylinders and heads and pistons. Just use your imagination.
About the TTV8, ok so it has more cylinders than the RB engines, but the RB engines have DOHC and lack Pushrods which apparantly are the ever present evil of todays cars. I dont think Old Gold was bagging out the car itself, more so the title which is a brash statement at best.

Doesnt the RB26DETT produce a stock 208 kw? The LS1 produces more than that stock so i know which engine is superior

The Japanese Governmet power cap states that cars can have no more than 206kw at the flywheel when the factory releases them.
Its been proven repeatedly though that GTR's come out with more power than that at the wheels and the Nissan engineers just keep smirking and saying "yup, 206 f/w kw. Take it or leave it."
So which engine is superior IYHO? The one with more cubes or the one with twin huffers? Rhetorical question I know but I can forsee an arguement breaking out over this so keep it clean guys/gals.

That's an untrue statement. Law of diminishing returns. Just because the engine is bigger it doesn't mean it's going to have a power output that is linear with it's capacity increase. Say you get a 308 and stroke it so it's 15% bigger, it's not neccesaril going to produce 15% more power. Bad example, but you get the idea.
Plus the basic design of the 308 is more than 30 years old, I bet if Holden completely redesigned it now with twin cam heads etc it would kick major rice arse. Who cares how many litres it is anyway, MORE POWER is MORE POWER!

And a 180SX doesn't really resemble "the undisputed King of Power" at all either.

Thats exactly true, just goto the drags and see what dominates, 95% of the fastest cars there have huge capacity engines.

14-03-03, 12:40 GMT+10#13 I would have to agree with HOLD64,
The RB26 is only 2.6Litres!!! not 4-8Litres like the V8s (and is 6 cyclinders). The power produced from such a small Production engine is phenominal !
The main topic here is who can squeeze the most power from Engine capacity Vs power ratio. And who is the winner here ? Most would agree the RB26DETT is !! The 180sx was used because of its pure weight factor.
The RB26DETT got 0ver 950Kw rear wheels and ran 7.18second pass.
Imagine driving such a beast ! I think I just wrap it around the Gum tree 8O  if it got into my hands.
Even the ET turbos did 7s pass and the Toyota Celica had V8 Twin turbo to make the same times. And ETs are 4 cyclinder monsters!!!
Holden will never be able to produce a 1300HP production engine with full modicfications. 8)
Nissan still holds the crown ! and will continue to do so... I hope..

You are dillussional at best. That RB26 was no production engine at all. It would have cost them more money to build that than any TTV8 would cost. I would bet a large chunk of cash that the only "factory" part on the RB26 in question would POSSIBLY be the block. Everything else would have been an aftermarket catalogue shoppers wet dream.
While this is not a Hoden endorsement, nor is it a Nissan bashing, seriously look reality in the face about topics like this.
If you need any proof about my point of mods, just look at the "new" capacity of this RB26.

ahahhaha why I ought to slap you round like a bitch and send you into the kitchen. A "production engine with full modifications" is not a production engine then is it .... it is infact, a MODIFIED ENGINE!!!
Modified engines and Production engines(Standard, Untouched ectect) are two mutually exclusive things which cannot overlap eachother. And makes as much sense as " Rotary engine with pistons"
What you meant to say I think is a "holden engine that has been modified, will never make 1300hp anyway." Which is a silly comment in itself, I think you really need to go either The Summernats .... or the Horse Power Heroes website before coming to this conclusion.

15-03-03, 15:03 GMT+10#16 Although I basically agree with the previous post, I would like to point out that there is such a thing as a rotary-piston engine.
Veselovsky's rotary piston engine. It is a cool machine.
Also there are Rotary arranged Piston engines used in aircraft. They are incredible and have enough power to make a plane revolve around the prop shaft in mid air. In fact if such an engine spits the dummy, it has enough inertia to tear the plane to bits.

18-03-03, 14:00 GMT+10#17 The term is "Radial" engine, not rotary, as far as planes are concerned.
There is nothing similar in design between a Wankel-Rotary engine and a radial aircraft engine. Radials are designed around making as much of the engine in contact with the airstream for max. cooling without liquid (i.e. radiator).
Very complex but incredibly powerful engines! Take the B29 engines... Wright Duplex Cyclones, Twin Turbo, (This was in the middle of WWII by the way, Japs had nothing to do with this!) for a crooozy 1,650 kW....
Thats a lotta kilowatts!
