I was just wondering if there is any difference in the 28spline axles out of a bor warner LSD and say the 28spline axles out a ford 9"? Like are they different thickness?
Thanks
I have 28 spline 9" axles in my VLT, they are stronger, better material. also if you want to shorten your B/W diff by 40mm each side, you can get std 9" axles the correct lenght off the shelf.
just need to weld and redrill the stud pattern.
Anything can be done with money, I 've got a mate who had a Borg Warner diff out of a VN narrowed down to fit under his LJ Torana it used a 4 pinion Lsd centre and he told me that ford 9 inch axels are fitted into the Borg warner carrier, it's a bloody strong combo he has'nt broken anything.
Mind you there are guy's like WYLD who managed to destroy a 31 spline Billet axle in his 9 inch diff but he ran a spool and loved to rip burouts and doughnuts.
Nothing is totally bullet proof I guess then.

well i have vlt axles in my 9 inch all i had to do is cut about 10mm off the ends forthe vlt diff is wider and i havent had any problems yet knock on wood
Thanks for the info, that is very intresting & good to know. Also I read in another post some where about using pintara gears or something, can anyone explain?
...I have a VN V8 28spline BW diff which I'm about to get shortened to fit under my EH - I've been told the only way to do it is to use 9inch 28spline axles as the BW axles arent thick enough to respline.
Pintaras, skylines, falcons and commies of the late 80's all used the same B/W diff, all the crown wheel and pinions are interchangable, pintaras have 4.11 gears, skylines have 3.9 and 3.7??. As far as i know they are all the same in strength.
Yes Skylines came with both 3.9 and 3.7 diff ratios. 3.9 was the auto ratio and 3.7 was the manual.
As far as all the same strength, I was under the impression that VL Turbo diffs were 28 spline 4 bolt and VL n/a diffs were 25 spline 2 bolt diffs. Am I wrong?
hehehehe, I meant pinion in my post, not bolt. I just got home from work and was tired. wasnt thinking striaght. ops:

the 4 pinion centres are stronger but the gears wouldnt be much different. All skylines had the 4 pinion diffs with LSD std on shillouette and GTS optional on others. Pintaras used the 2 pinion diff.
I read in a technical tips magazine that these B/W shafts must not be used in a Ford diff even though they appear to fit,as there is a certain amount of cleareance which can strip the axle splines under heavy loads.
Hi all,
The higher the gear ratio the faster the take off ?
3.45 will take off faster than 3.08s ?
3.9 will take off faster tahn 3.45 ?
Can we clear things up hear, from what I am told its the other way around, that 3.08 takes off quicker but revs higher at 100km/hr.
Which one it right ? might have to give the experts a call (the Diff reco joints!!!)
No this is not the case,
What the ratios mean is that say for every 3.45 revs of the tailshaft the axle shaft will turn one revolution, but say on a v6 or v8 Commodore the tailshaft will rotate 3.08 times to achieve 1 revolution at the axle shaft, which means at lower RPM's on a motor with equivalent torque output the 3.45:1 diff ratio will make the car quicker off the mark.
That's why on say VL 6 cylinder Commodores and even 4 litre Falcons they have the 3.45:1 diff ratio because they don't produce a great deal of torque down low as compared with a Holden V6 or V8 which has the 3.08:1 ratio.
Ford even bragged about their AU XR8 ute (with the 3.45:1 diff ratio) by comparing it to an SS 5 litre Commodore saying its lower gearing makes it quicker off the mark ,but it says a lot for top end fuel economy, etc, besides they never compared it with its supposed equivalent the HSV 5 litre.
