Howdy, I know we had this topic before on the old site, but I am still having issues. I'm almost convinced that it is the tranny, but i recon i should get a second opinion before heading back to RATCO. Scenario: when you take off from a standing start, as soon as boost comes on its vibrates the **** out of the car. it also does it in second if it kicks back and gets under boost. It almost feels as if it is slipping. The tailshaft has been total recon'd by "Hardy Spicer" in melb, so i doubt that is the issue. Can someone please help! Thanks  ops: Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Have you checked the transmision rear mounts to see if they are ok? i guess if one is rat****, or non existant (like one of mine) it could make it vibrate like all ****...?? just a thought.

I had a major shuddering problem in my car that would come and go, just as you described, did you get a new CV joint in the tailshaft when you got it recoed, most places just check it looks OK and then rebalance etc. The CV joint is the flexible joint that joins the two halfs of the tailshaft. These things cost at least $280 bucks new I think, and so is not usually included. if this CV joint is shot it will shudder only under hard loads and certain bending angles (mine would always do it on one particular slope of road!) they can even do this if the joint is too dry I would ask if it was replaced when tailshaft was done. Mine looked perfect and was recently rebuilt even when it was playing up. thats why it had me stumped for ages too. If youve got any mates with VLs just swap them over and see how it goes, they are quite easy to drop off and back in if youve got chassis stands. definatelty worth looking into this, I may be wrong but its worth at try.

yeah the CV was replaced. as was the center bearing and both the unis aswell as being balanced. I have tried changing the way the bolt line up to the diff but has made no difference. I recon i could feel the tranny slipping just before. Check the fluid and all is good. Has to be the tranny.

dont want to harp on about CV joint but maybe it is a bad one, or packed wrongly, its easy to swap in another tailshaft and see. other than that I dont know much about shuddering autos, best of luck finding it cos I know much my prob used to give me the s#its.

i have a vibration when i take off under load ie. up a hill. It is definantly the gearbox mount. I took the box out and put it back in again (for a different prob) and it fixed the problem for a while but its coming back again now.

Its funny that its only ever happened since the tranny has been out.... i recon it could be the mounts. Thanks

may sound wierd mate, but smell the tranny oil after a day of driving, if it smells burnt thats not a good sign! also listen for a slight grinding noise on take off, and a big kick into 2nd gear. my tranny does the exact same thing, and ive had it checked, and its time for a re-build. sorry to break the bad news mate! andrew

its quite a long shot but check ur engine mounts. if ones broken and you give it some accel , it will seem to shudder/jump , and there will be a noticeable clunking sort of sound.

Easy way to check if the trans is slipping is to stall the trans against the brakes at a standstill....put foot and handbrake on as hard as you can, then floor the accelerator. If you don't get wheelspin, note where the tacho sits. Don't do this for more than a few seconds, and let the trans cool for at least 30 seconds before trying it again. The tacho should read very close to the stall speed of your convertor, if it's higher or lower by more than about 3/400 rpm, you have slippage. I agree with a loose mount, torquing the engine over against the brake will show this too..do it with the bonnet open, and have a mate stand(to one side!) and look to see if the engine moves around relative to the firewall too much. By the way, I had a terrible vibration in my R31 a while ago under hard acceleration..bad enough to cause me to back off the throttle....couldn't find the problem. Replaced the rear shocks and it's fine. It was axle tramping, even at 40 kmh. Regards, Andrew.

Does your car have a torque converter??? If so the Torque converter could be stuffed. My car would vibrate badly whilst it was under load i.e. going up a step hill at low speed etc. If it is you have two options, replace it, which cost hundreads or simply disconnect it as I did.

spiritfc, what you are talking about is a lock up torque convertor and these were deleted for the turbo model as they are weak. they dont lock up under full load anyway so it couldnt be the problem.

if it is ur cv, ive got a reco one that i was gunna put in mine (thought it was gone but it only turned out to be the centre bearing) that i can sell ya for $160. im in Melbourne. You can get a whole shaft cheaper than that from a wrecker but usually the centre bearing, unis and cv's are half ****ed in em anyway. cheers

by the way if u do want that cv, ul have to make sure the NA ones and the urbo ones are the same. ive got a feelin that the turbo has a finer spline than the NA. Yes mine is an NA.

JetCalais didn't say he had a turbo or a NA VL so I was giving a personal experiance from my NA VL. You are wrong about the torque converter though, my car car would shudder badly ONLY whilst going up a step hill at low speed i.e. under full load...

I thought u'd have realised (spiritfc) that he was referring to a turbo car when he said about it coming on boost etc.. (boost doesn't come on in an NA man) lol !!!! GET WITH IT ! haha and no turboluke isn't wrong about the torque converter.. they were only on NA boxes dude... if urs is screwed on ur NA.. can u imagine the the same box in a turbo.. haha wouldnt last long man.. would be smashed like, umm a glass falling on concrete. bye Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Maybe you should read what I said exchaser??? I said that he was wrong about the sympton of a f***ed torque converter. I didn't say turbo's hada T/C.

what exchaser is talking about is the LOCKUP CLUTCH. a torque convertor/stall convertor is a core part of all automatic transmissions. the lockup clutch is only on n/a's and locks the internals of the convertor so it doesnt slip. its gives you better economy and keeps the revs down. this can be identified as a '5th gear' that kicks in at 70ish.. when they wear they can shudder. they only come on while you are in 4th and over 65-70 so it is not the cause of most driveline vibration. and yes disconnecting them is an easy 'fix' - they arent all that useful anyway and to get them fixed when they are worn is too much hassle.
