talk to brent about the water line thing hes mentioned about it before to me a long time ago send him a PM on here Kelvs

and also......hope your going to have a screamer pipe
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
glad i did pull off that turbo, its seen better days thats for sure, the water lines that run to it,one was blocked with rusty gunk, the peller has alot of movement in it,and if you look close at the last pic,you can see 2 hair line cracks in housing, she was poked!
new one if i can get it to fit,is flowed to 300kw(not that any of my set up will allow that...yet) should run alot better than old turb turb

yea thanks Aaron, was the person i was thinking of hitting up,hes the man in the know and hopefully he could sort it all for me...
And yup of course shes guna have screamer pipe.......and DOSE!

wats the advantage of running external wastegate instead of the factory wastegate?
I think its mainly because external W/G's flow better than internals (generally speaking), because they are bigger.
When a wastegate opens, you want as much exhaust gas as possible to exit out of it - because the gases that can't escape will travel towards your turbo and keep it spinning.
Ie if you set your boost controller pressure to say 10psi, once the boost pressure (the air pressure inside your intake manifold - or wherever the wastegate vacuum/pressure line is connected to) - hits 10psi, then the wastegate will start to open - so that some exhaust gas can escape - otherwise if the exhaust gas couldn't bypass the turbo, the turbo will keep spooling as far as it will go, and either end up blowing your intercooler piping off (if your lucky), or causing your engine to lean out and melt pistons.
Sometimes the boost pressure will 'spike'. this is when it hits say 10psi, the wastegate starts opening, but not all of the gas can escape quick enough, resulting in the 'trapped' gas flowing towards the turbo and spooling it up a little bit further, by a couple of psi (ie it might spike to 12-13psi), then it drops off again.
If it spikes too much it could potentially damage your engine (especially if it hasn't been tuned to run that much pressure).
If you find that your boost pressure tends to spike quite often, it is usually fixed by installing a wastegate with more flow. So then its easier to change an external one that it is to modify the internal one.
That being said, if you aren't having problems with the internal one, then I think you don't have to be concerned about changing it.
(someone please correct me If I am wrong - this is just my understanding of it)
Sam

broke the throttle cable,so it was excuse i needed to do the deed.
As you see from pics got new turbo going in,have few other plans for her too while im at it.Should be or will be at least ready for power cruise!
Righto problem i have though is though, turbo id bought is different.
As you can see from pics
1-rear exhaust housing is different,so so bad could prob get it welded to VL one?
2-theres no hoses for water cooling in new one?oil cooled only?will that work and can i plug up water holes from block?
3-the actuator has 2 outlets instead of the 1 on VL turbo, block it off or run it to where?
Also want to plum a wastegate into the exhaust manifold, can most engineers do this?
Any help would be awesome, thanks guys
1) Check with the guy you bought the turbo off, see if he has a seperate flange available for it. If so, get one then take it to an exhaust shop and get them to weld the flange onto your dump pipe. (Or could even go to an exhaust shop that does custom exhausts - they might have a flange for it.)
2) Most likely just oil cooled, which should be fine if your not ringing it out all the time. Some turbos out there are just oil cooled, others are both. People tend to prefer the 'both' ones, as they tend to have a longer life. But if your not wanting to run high boost and lots of power, I think oil-cooled should be fine, just make sure you change the oil and filter regularly so that the turbo's oil galleries/lines don't get clogged up. And yea just plug up the water holes.
3) One of those actuators will be the one that sees boost pressure (I'm guessing the top one but please check as I could be wrong), and the other one I think is usually used if your using electronic boost control (solenoids), otherwise I think it can just be vented to atmosphere (put a hose on it pointing downward so no dirt gets inside it).
4) An exhaust shop like Al's Mufflers (or most others that do custom exhausts) should be able to weld a pipe off the manifold for an external wastegate (and generally the should know where to put it to obtain the best flow).
If you buy an external wastegate they usually come with at least 1 spare flange, which the exhaust shop would weld to the end of that pipe so you can bolt your wastegate on (or clamp it if it is a v-band clamp type).

Ok I stand corrected:
(http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/g...ary/index.html (http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/general/0706dp_turbocharger_glossary/index.html))
Boost creep: When the boost rises past the set limit. This is often caused by a wastegate that cannot handle the exhaust flow.
Boost spike: A period of uncontrolled boost when the wastegate and/or blow-off valve cannot act fast enough because of sudden changes in the engine load.

legend, thanks for the advice there Sam,helps alot.
All of which i kinda knew but ya never sure of and good to know someone else thinks the same.
appreciate any and all advice.cheers for the links too.
The turbo i bought has the housing/flange that heads to exhaust, but yea needs cutting and welding to VL one.
Ok nother question, had different responses from people,
Where is the best to plum ya wastegate from?turbo housing or exhaust manifold?
been told if its off the turbo housing you can control boost better?....
cheers

i remember reading something on this but unfortunately dont have the info on me at the moment i think it may have come with my wastegate when i brought it.not too sure about off the turbo housing but by where the wastegate is located gives you more accurate response. ok just found the info it says to avoid boost creep or boost spikeing it is recomended to use turbo exhaust manifold designs that prioritize the wastegate . giving the wastegate priority , or at a minimum an equal priority with the turbine , will give you the greatest flexibility in controlling boost pressure and fine tuning turbocharger response.its got a diagram but yeah ill try and explain it .
wastegate priority is the exhaust gases flowing out of the engine and up into the wastegate sitting up top and then feeding back and off to the side where the turbo is mounted.
turbine priority is where the exhaust gases flow out the engine and up into the turbo sitting up top then feeding back and off to the side where the wastegate is mounted
hopefully you can understand that . i think my setup on my engine is quite good as the exhaust gases flow upwards and into both the turbo and wastegate but could be wrong just my thoughts anyway hope this helps
This might help to understand the theory better: (courtesy of turbosmartonline.com)
(although a bit hard to figure out, as normally you don't mount the turbo off one single pipe, its
6 pipes which merge at the turbo + the wastegate pipe)
This one is also a good example (found in the 6Boost Customer's pics and dyno graphs thread):

hey sam, so what happens to the vented exhaust gas out the ultra gate?
is it just vented to atmosphere? or back into the exhaust system after the turbo?
btw.. finally have pics up of my vl...

the exhaust gases should be plumbed back into the exhaust after the turbo and not to atmosphere to make it legal but there are ways around this

And yup of course shes guna have screamer pipe.......and DOSE!
i bet the dose pipe caused all that wear?
awesome same thanks for that, thats a great help mate.
im going to be using standard VLT manifold though, that 6boost one is very kol though, and thats how would do it if had custom manifold.

could have do yea, wont be having the dose pipe on for daily running.
just for cruises...
cheers for posting pics up bro,
i been busy boy,as you can see shes guna be off the road for a while,im in full attack mode.
shall be all go for power cruise.
battery tray wasnt too bad to do,little bit of rust under it.
relocating fuses/relays to glove box, ditching the fuse box, wasnt hard to do either.
now have alot of holes to fill!
joy
cheers guys, nothing to major going on at this stage just quick tidy up,do it all again when i respray the whole car.
main reason id done the battery tray was the battery had swelled up and leaked acid every where,so thats going in boot, and the fuse box was melting with the heat from turbo,so needed to be done.
got few other things up my sleeve while im at it
