ok i will have a look at that. first i have to find out where exactly the leak is. as i said, the car was sitting for a long time and the fluid had dropped. i topped it up when we moved it, then it was left to sit again for a while. once again the fluid had dropped. i am going to pull the master cylinder off in the next day or 2 as well as have a proper look at all the lines, etc to see if it is just a damaged line causing the fluid loss. i will also give it a quick bleed to see if that makes a difference. if it does then i'm going to completely flush the fluid. if it doesn't then i will keep checking things until i find the problem and then completely flush the fluid. ok, so a quick update, i just topped up the fluid a bit as it was low. when the car was turned off and i pumped the brakes the pedal slowly got harder, but still didn't quite feel right. so i started the car and started pumping the brakes and the pedal felt better than it did previously, and didn't make the car stall at all, and the revs didn't even really change at all unless i pressed the pedal as hard as i could. but again, the brakes didn't quite feel right. the car isn't registered so i couldn't take it for a drive to see if they stop or not. oh i should point out that the fluid was only low in the section of the resevior for the front brakes but not the rear, which makes me think that the master cylinder isn't leaking into the booster. also i noticed that the master cylinder is only a 15/16" when i thought most v8's came with the 1". also when pumping the brakes i could hear a sucking noise from under the dash. is that normal. i've never actually had the car when it was going properly (was given it by the father in law as he was only going to sell it for $500 and it had my mags and tyres on it which he was going to pay me for if he sold it). so what i want to know is, could the master cylinder and booster be ok and it just needs a bleed? but it has been loosing fluid, but mostly from the front. lines seem to be ok. i just want to make sure it is the booster, etc before i go and do this. sorry for the hijack

First things first, go round and clean up all the rubber brakes hoses and all brake connections (throughtout the entire car) with either methylated spirits or brake cleaner (don't use any other solvent). Then go and sit by each rubber hose, and get someone else to pump the brakes, see if you can spot any leaks anywhere. Also check along the length of the solid steel brake lines to make sure they haven't rusted away. If everything is ok, then move on to your brake booster and master cylinder. the sucking noise from under your dash sounds like it could be a leak in your booster. So that will need to be replaced. Is your VH a factory V8? if so it does seem odd that it has a 15/16 master. Best thing to do would be get a VS V6 (plastic) brake booster, VT master cylinder, AU Falcon reservoir, get brake line adapters from Hopper Stoppers, put it all in, get the lines bent (make sure you use a pipe bending tool otherwise the lines will kink). One of the best things you'll ever do for an early Commodore's brakes Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i could see a leak down the back of the master cylinder (didn't appear until after i topped up the fluid yesterday and sat there pumping the brakes for ages). got a mate getting me a vl master cylinder today off a wrecked car he has and we are just going to put that in to see what it does before moving foward. also going to jack the car up so i can put a bit of force on each wheel individually to make sure that all wheel cylinders are working as well because that may influence what approach i take when buying the parts. i inspected the lines last night and they all seem to be fine. and yes the car is the factory v8. i was looking in a brake parts catalogue and it had most v8 VH and VK commodores listed as having the 1" master and 4 wheel disc, but did also have some listed as having the 15/16" master and 4 wheel disc as well as all the drum rears having the 15/16". gotta ask my father in law if it is the original master or not as i don't think it is, and he may have put the wrong one on, but i don't think he would have because he is into cars and hotrods and knows all about matching cylinder sizes, etc since he had to go through it all for his hotrod. i may also look at doing the full VT booster/master setup and just doing what i have to to make it fit as there is a few on ebay at the moment, and another mate of mine wrote off his vn yesterday so i can steal the resevoir off that.

is it possible to bolt on a vs booster and master (standard) onto a vk? Would it be better than the standard setup, kind of in-between the vlt and vt brake setups? reason i ask is to avoid all this modifying which im not so comfortable with. I want to use the ve upgrade instead, because apparently you can use smaller boosters and masters because the calipers are more efficient. Anybody heard about this?

I have read through the pages and I am now a little confused. I have a VS plastic booster will that fit straight up? Will the pedal be at the right height or will the rod need drilling? Can I use a VS V8 1" master or will that have a **** pedal overthe VT one, VT being a fast fill design? What do I have to do to fit the lines up with out having to use the adapters, Do I use VN lines and then have custom hoses made up to fit the R32gtr calipers? What series VS reservoir do I need or am I best off using a AU/BA one? A brake place I talked to (they had no idea) said I would have a crap pedal if I use front and rear skyline calipers, Is there any truth in this?

1) VS plastic booster fits straight to where the old VL one sits. (The nuts holding the VL Master Cyl to the VL Booster are too big to use to bolt the VT Master to the VS Booster - I just took 2 nuts off the back bracket on the old VL booster and used those). 2) On the VS booster there is a bolt which is partially screwed into the pushrod. Unscrew it. cut the head off, then cut a slit in it so you can screw it in with a screwdriver (it has to sit flush with the pushrod - and then your pedal will be at the correct height). 3) Get a VT Master it will be much much much better 4) I think you can use VN front lines but from what I've read the VN Rear one is quite different (in bends and length I guess) to the VL so it won't fit (you'll have to either get that one re-flared or get the adapter for it). I used the adapters - much easier for me, just had to bend the lines (Dad did that for me coz ya gotta take your time, I would have gotten impatient and broken them :P). Not sure on hoses for your calipers - depends on how long they need to be and what type/size of fittings is needed at each end. 5) Get an AU reservoir I know for sure that it fits straight on with no modification at all and it sits pretty level. 6) The writer of this thread says "It is highly recommended on the VT Twin Spot Caliper Upgrade and also the Nissan 4 Spot Caliper Upgrades." So if your calipers are 4 pots then they should be fine. cheers Sam

You can either get your brake lines reflared, or you can buy these adapters and put them on (if you get the adapters have a look at them and you'll see how the flares will mate to the flare on your vt master and the flare on your brake lines ---------- Post added 20-04-10 at 12:38 ---------- Quote: Originally Posted by Cocopopz [View Post] Can you use any VT master? ie are V6, V8 and HSV models all the same? The only difference is that the ones from an ABS car will have 1 of the ports blocked off (with a bolt so just take it out). Sam

FYI - 1.The VS booster is a plastic single diaphragm style booster where as the VT booster is a metal twin diaphragm style which is also more powerful and also the best suited with the VT master cylinder. 2.The three pipe adapters are generally the preferred method of use for VB to VP series 1 commodores because it is the easiest option to re flaring BUT if you reflare your your brake pipes it is neater. 3.VP series 2 to VS do not need the adapters for the master cylinder as they have the same flares. 4.The VS plastic reservoir on the VT master cylinder does keep the angle and fluid level on the conversion. 5.If using the VS plastic booster and VT master cyl it is best to use the spacer available rather than cutting or grinding the VS pushrod down. 6.If fitting VT calipers to VB to VS commodores you should use longer brake lines . 7.VB to VR master cylinders are either 1" (25mm) or 15/16 (23.8mm) 8.VS master cylinders actually have a stepped bore but are only 7/8 (22mm) and 1 1/8 (28.57mm) 9.VT to VY master cyls can be used but not VZ and the bore size is 1" (25.4mm) and 1 1/4 (31.75mm) By far the best option is the VT booster and VT master cylinder conversion because the components are either new or fully reconditioned but also the boosters have been modified internally and externally to bolt straight up with an adjustable pushrod so they work correctly.

OK from memory all boosters from VB to VR have the 4 bolt mount on the back of the booster and the VS has the 2 bolt BUT on the firewall mount they are all the same so all you should need is the original VS booster bracket.
