Whoop, picked up my Wagon from the diff shop today Ratio changed from 3.08 to 2.77 (from an XF Falcon ) along with a center/carrier from a VX V8 Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

a V6 24 Valve Mistsubishi Lancer came in to work yesterday , i was shocked. LOL

I supplied the falcon gears so his work cost $700 all up...Reconditioned VX LSD Carrier normally 550 he did for 400, plus a new pinion bearing & seal and new LSD fluid along with $200 for labour. Swaping the gears has brought the RPM down about 250-300 which isnt a major change, but makes enough of a difference. I just have to swap the speedo gear over to correct the speedo reading. As for the backlash, yeah there was quite abit which is all I was going to fix but figured Id do the gears at the same time. After I rebuilt the driveshaft it still had the old "clunk" when coming off the gas but thats now gone with the backlash reset.

hi dan, i just had my diff and drive shaft rebuilt also lsd just checked and shimmed pinion bearings, carrier bearings and axles bearings new backlash checked and i put the 3.45 gears in( as it was from v8, 3.08 ratio)as i have a 5 spd. , but when i put it into 1st gear or reverse there is some free play, not a clunk but i think it seems like to much play. no wobbles or anything when driving. i have had it checked by 2 different mechanics but they seem to think its ok. i have noticed that the gearbox has a whine when driving though. also the speedo is way out now (80 on the speedo is aroun 100kmh) from changing the diff (25 to 28 spline) and i have 60 series profile tyres on 15 inch rims. what is the speedo gear swap that you are doing? cheers, nigel

Right.....regarding the free play, there should still be a little bit. If it was completely tight, the gears would bind up and break/wear and your bearings wouldnt last very long. If the person who checked your diff set the backlash properly and with the correct tool, you can only assume its fine. Whine in your gearbox is probably just the gearbox bearings...if its not super loud I wouldnt worry much about it but its not going to get quieter. With your speedo, 60 profile tires are good for the 15" rims (factory was 65 so not alot of difference). If your car is factory RB30, with the RB30 gearbox and the correct 3.45 ratio it should be spot on. Changing from 25 to 28 spline doesnt affect your speedo so thats sweet. Since I changed my ratio from 3.08 to 2.77 my speedo now reads about 10k's slower (says 90 when Im doing 100). Basically its doing 1/4 of a turn less and loses 10kmh. If your speedo reads 20kmh slower, its almost losing half a turn which could mean your diff is still 3.08 instead of 3.45. I would have the ratio double checked just to be 100% sure. About my speedo gear swap. Because my car has a Trimatic its the same trans from HQ all through the 70's and 80's basically, so there is a variety of different gears to choose from to get my speedo reading right. To get your speedo correct, as I mentioned first thing I would check is your diff ratio, then move onto other things like if your gearbox is RB30 and not RB20 (they have slightly different ratios also). You should find your problem there as your tires are good so theres not much else to look at.... Geeeez I talk too much and its late as Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

nah cheers for that i am keen to work it out as the gearset that came out of the 6cyl diff ( 3.45 on the tag) was transferrd to the v8 diff i had rebuilt ( i have the 3.08 gearset in the shed ). its just that i got pulled up for doing 115kmh and when i pasted the cop i looked at speedo and was prob more like just under 90 so dunno what happened there. got let off the ticket as the system crashed as he was cheking my details and just gave me a stern warning not to speed !!!! howz that for a fri 13th tale !!!! another thing i was wondering was if my berlina had 14 inch wheels from factory and if this could be the reason for speedo inaccuracy.(now i have the royale /calais wheels) also my car had a manuel conversion before i got it so maybe it is a rb20 box. the wonders of the vl Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Nah I'm thinking about selling haha.... just getting low offers though so not really fussed. I'm just going to keep modifying it and adjust the price accordingly. next on the list is a vr front suspension conversion with s13/14 coilovers.

My headlights are somewhere between ozzie and nz I can't wait to get them Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Got my headlights today.... they are on their way back as they are for a VK not a VL and one of them where broken, so hopefully next week I should have new ones goin to plan.
