http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...viceriders.htm (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Licences/OtherLicences/MotorcycleLicences/Approvedmotorcyclesfornoviceriders.htm) i could be wrong but i think they would still cover you as you have reg. bit like a car, if your unlicensed, no insurance but TAC is seperate and still pays out if you are involved in an accident with a person etc?

id say you would be fine, it doesnt have the CRF, allthough it does have a WR450 and KLX450 on the list which from my what i know from riding both bikes (crf450x, klx450r) they arnt much different in power and/or weight. i would think TAC and license are two different things anyway so shouldnt matter what bike your on. TAC still pays out if you injure yourself without a license. as far as im aware anyway.

I know this is a pretty late reply but www.powersportsplus.com (http://www.powersportsplus.com) is what I use for my Yamaha/Kawasaki parts. So much cheaper than buying local. or www.boats.net (http://www.boats.net) even

Yeah i did mean riding a harley on the road while only having my P's, its not something id probly do due to insurance reasons obviously but just interested in knowing... Im also currently looking for a dirt bike, Ive owned a 2 stroke before but will probably be looking for a 4 stroke, I have around 5k to spend but prefer to spend a bit less. does anyone recomend anything? Im after a 250f and will most likily doing a bit of track/bush so will need rec reg, ive been told to stay away from 05,06 CRF's dues to valve clearance problems Ive found a 1 bike i really like, its an 07 crf250r, Its got new plastics (and comes with originals) New head gaskit, piston and rings just done, and valves recently checked. It looks good and i can get it for 4k... It doesnt have rec reg so i will need to put a kit on it eventually, he also doesnt have recipts for the work done as he says his mate is a mechanic, before i buy it i will get it checked out by my mechanic but what are peoples thoughts? Should i buy something thats been rebuilt? or buy something newer that hasnt been? any models/years i should stay away from? anything specific i should check

I believe the CRF250 were the ones that had valve issue's. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah did it carry on to 07 or was it just an 05 issue, revues don't mention it on the 07

VL-EXEC i just sold a 05 WR250F for 4k, it was the most reliable bike ive ever ridden. i brought it off the first owner which is a close mate so knew its full history. it never needed the valve clearances done in 3000k's +. all i needed to do was general maintenance (sprockets, tyres etc.) thats my suggestion for your price range. regarding riding the harley, its the same penalty i recived.. 3 points for too powerful and $250 odd fine (forget the exact amount). im not sure about SA but you dont lose you license in vic as the points come off your car license as they are all on the one license. ---------- Post added 20-06-11 at 12:55 ---------- also, valve issues were on 07 CRF's, a mate just sold one.. he was sick of doing valve clearances after every 2 tanks of fuel.

Thanks for that mate, After a bit more research it seems any model/year 4 stroke could have possible valve clearance issues not just specificaly CRF etc etc

Depends what you get. With my CRF450r i usually have to shim the valves every 6 to 12 months. I don't think the CRF450x had many valve issue's.

IMO id be doing a bit more research if you've found most 4 strokes have valve issues. speak to a few dealer mechanics, ones that wont just feed you crap to buy the bike they favor. (i now ride a kx450 so im not just saying it cause i own one) the crf450x's are much better than the 250's. a mates also done about 15hours on a new 2010 crf450R with no problems. good tip, if you drop it in a river or what not or the bike sux a bit of water in, dont ride it.. valves will be gone in no time, also a clean air filter helps alot to save valves.
