So my bt1 wont go. I drove it to work 2 weeks ago parked up then jumped in it after work and it fired (not on 6 cylinders) for 5 seconds then died. Hasn't gone since. Got a sparky mate to look at it he tracked it down to the crank angle sensor (cas) so I ordered one and a bearing at same time.
So I replaced bearing once I removed distributor and replaced cas and put all back in car. Still wont go. Sparky come back around and went through whole wiring loom back to computer, changed computer still wont go.
Ended up getting chris' bt1 round and putting his cas into my car and it fired up. So we put my cas in his car and it wouldnt go.
Whats the chances of having a faulty brand new cas?

Hopefully you should be up and running soon.
You should try and make the Kaikoura hop with your car.

17-02-15, 08:05 GMT+10#2683 Anyone have any tips for reducing engine bay temps? mine are out of control. Ive got an exh manifold shield that im fitting this week. thinking of heat wrapping my intake piping that loops back over the dizzy and round to the intake as well.
Since i'm using the car for tarmac sprints once a month and the occasional puke track day i am thinking of gettng a pick-a-part bonnet and cutting vents in it. Was thinking one big east-west one just behind the radiator fan and some vents along the turbo side, cutting 3 sides of a square and pushing the flap down to scoop/aid air flow up out of the bonnet.
Bonnet vent ideas

17-02-15, 09:21 GMT+10#2684 What's different in your bay to every other VL?
How much is out of control?

17-02-15, 14:45 GMT+10#2685 you could try removing that rubber seal that runs across the top of the panel in front of where the wiper motor sits , might help a little bit of heat escape out the vents in the bonnet. Both of my vls have had hot engine bays , as long as your coolant temps are fine i wouldnt be too worried about it

18-02-15, 12:30 GMT+10#2686 Coolant temps are ok but the intake piping is almost to hot to touch. Might just try exh heat wrap on it to insulate

also the engine bay temps could be related to lean fuel ratios causing engine to run hotter

interesting ill look into that being a problem

10-03-15, 19:48 GMT+10#2693 Hello fellow VL Nuts.....
Looking at moving over in the next year or so and bringing my VL calais 5L with me...
What are the laws regarding having parts of the engine sticking out the bonnet? under the scoop is a hole cut in the bonnet with a 11 inch air filter sticking out 70mm, Is there anything i have to be careful about when getting certified/WOF? it has a fully reworked 308 in it, intake manifold, carby, exhaust etc... Just looking through some of the LVV mod list and it is pretty vague in what can be done... We have guidelines in Australia to the Millimeter (lowering etc...) any help would be appreciated...

11-03-15, 08:31 GMT+10#2694 you're going to find that compared to Australia it's ALOT easier here.
import inspection is likely the hardest you're going to go through

11-03-15, 15:56 GMT+10#2695 Pretty much anything goes here. The LVV guide is pretty vague, but as a rule, highly modified cars often require certification which costs around $500. This is really just a very thorough inspection of the car to make sure all the modifications are safe and properly done. A cert plate with all the modifications listed is stamped and riveted into the engine bay upon passing. Coilover suspension requires a cert, lowered springs do not. If you want a blower hanging out of the bonnet - no dramas - there is a maximum height (which is pretty high), but that's it. Is your 308 is producing a lot more power than stock?

11-03-15, 20:37 GMT+10#2696 Thank you for the replies.... it would be producing more.. 10.6:1 comp, Crane 286 Camshaft, roller rockers..3g stall, ported heads, trend push rods, Ice ignition, Whats the go with the 20% more power rule?

Yeah that's why I was asking - I think if it's producing more than 20% more than factory it might require a cert, not 100% sure on that, that might only apply to an engine swap. Because the car looks fairly stock, you'd probably get away without having one. A lot of it comes down to where you get the WOF (six monthly safety check), if you take it to a garage rather than a warrant testing station, you're more likely to pass without too many issues. Cops rarely pull over cars for safety checks unless the car looks dodgy, or you happen to draw attention to yourself... I've been pulled over a few times in my VL, it's all done by book and certed, but not once has a cop asked to see the cert plate.

12-03-15, 18:38 GMT+10#2700 Biggest thing is to make sure you have all the ownership papers(in your name)And proof of that,Will be quite easy to register if you have proof also that it had a road worthy in Aussie.,Where are you looking at bringing her in(north or south)If it is south I may be able to help.
