http://www.snowatch.com.au/long-range-snow-forecast.php Season 2011 early season outlook: I see the current La Nina pattern weakening over the next month or so. With this the SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) will drop from the high positive reading it has been since last July. This would normally mean that the above average rainfall that we have seen over SE Australia over the last six to nine months will start to ease back to more normal levels. Coastal waters off Western Australia have had record high water temperatures over the last few months. When this moves down the coast into the Great Australian Bight via the strengthening Leeuwin Current during May we should see the probability of a cold front picking up added moisture increase. From June onwards we shouldn’t see as much moisture from the north being dragged into the mountains from the NW which is a good sign as this usually falls as rain in the Alpine areas. At the moment I see a fairly slow start to the season unless the La Nina breakdown happens faster than first thought. A pattern of slow blocking high pressure systems should block most cold fronts from reaching the alpine areas with any great strength during May (which is fairly normal for this time of year). With the SOI readings decreasing the SE of Australia and the Alpine areas should see average to slightly below average rainfall for May and most of June. Large blocking high pressure systems should dominate the SE much of the time with warmer than average daytime temperatures. There will be some cool crisp nights (good for snowmaking) but I think these may be scarce leading into the early part of the season. When comparing historical data and patterns with current anomalies I see more positives than negatives and as such see a good snow season coming. A slow start which is normal with light snowfalls for early June, unless SOI drops dramatically in May, which would mean good snowfalls may come earlier. If we see the SOI levels hover around the +3 to +8 area in late June-July (which I see as a real possibility) we could see some very good snowfalls, not the smaller falls we have been used to over the last few years but falls around 70-100cm due the the cold fronts reaching further north that last season. Looking back over the last 30 years some of the best snowfalls have been on a weakening La Nina (1981, 1996, 2000). Although having said that there have been quite a few average La Nina years. A positive is that the worst seasons (1982, 1993, 2006) have been the opposite El Nino (drier pattern) years. With all of the above falling into line I feel July and August could see some very good dumps of snow from intense storm activity which should see the snow depth increase dramatically. I’d be surprised if the Victorian resorts didn’t finally crack the2m mark and NSW could even be up around 2.5m by the end of August. I’ll be monitoring any changes in patterns leading up to the season and will advise of any changes or information that may strengthen my views. At least he gives it a shot. I prefer any speculation, but he's usually better on the short range
