Internally the VL 304 is the best of the lot (aside from the slightly lower compression ratio when compared to VH-VK), hardened valve seats etc, the problem was that it was strangled with emissions gear, restrictive air cleaner, a wimpy cam and cast iron manifolds, just a simple cam, extractors and a re-jet will seriously wake it up.
