Its an '87 whereas all A9Ys are '88. Could be a HDT Calais but the owner isnt sure. I am seeing what I can find out as I am interested in it if its a genuine HDT Calais. Hehe you edited while I posted, yeah it isnt an A9Y.

Also it was a 6cyl NA not an 8 and had a HDT bodykit. Additionally it was a manual whereas this one is an auto....so yeah I am guessing it is not the Sandown one Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Precisely LOACH....... The ONE and ONLY Sandown wagon was red, standard front. This wagon is a HDT assembled Berlina... not A9Y.... That much i can tell you with 100% certainty without even seeing the plates. The A9Y Calais wagons NEVER came out in that colour scheme... they were all red, white, or blue. Would be a good project, those HDT assembled Calais wagons left the factory in Elizabeth as fully optioned Berlinas, and delivered to the HDT plant in Melbourne with the Calais front and badges to be fitted there. Often buyers optioned up their purchases to include HDT accessories, since the car was already there.... I would buy it myself and restore it (with a different colour of course) if i didn't already have one Calais wagon draining my wallet lol Turning a standard N/A auto to Turbo, 3" inch custom exhaust, 5 speed R33 box, no holes intercooler and R32 GTR skyline 330mm front brakes and 19" VE GTS rims isn't cheap. Don't really need the HDT part though, my A9Y is already HDT Improved. Full Group A kit, a Signature Series Grille, and badging....

Don't really need the HDT part though, my A9Y is already HDT Improved. Full Group A kit, a Signature Series Grille, and badging.... Wow, yours sounds awesome. I just want to get a Calais to justify my existence on this forum - it is CALAISturbo.com after all Not that I don't love my Berlina - I don't plan on ever selling it - especially as it is a genuine Manual Turbo Berlina Wagon. I could be wrong but I think this makes it one of the, if not the highest, spec manual VL wagon Holden (not HDT) made. All the Calais' were auto. I was told by the mechanic who did my blue slip there was only 5 Berlina Turbo Manual wagons made, so yeah I never want to sell her. How can you be sure the Ebay Calais is a HDT and not a mock up (most of the HDT Calais wagons didn't have build plates and all of them show up as Berlinas by the numbers)? I read that there should be a build sheet under the carpet and I have asked the owner to look for it. Is there any other way you can tell a genuine HDT Calais? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Thanks mate, yeah, she's pretty awesome. Like you, I will never sell her. Good job with the MTBerlina man, they ARE rare. I think it's 20 though, not 5. Keep it though mate, it's certainly worth it. No there isn't any other way to tell a genuine HDT Calais, short of chasing up the VIN number with Holden. Also, that build sheet, if it is even still there after 24 years, is a HOLDEN sheet.... from the factory. HDT never did that. The only way to tell is if it has a build plate... SOME of the HDT Calais wagons had them, depending on how many accessories the buyer had HDT fit to the vehicle. To qualify for a HDT build plate and build number, a vehicle has to have a certain number of key modifications, if these mods weren't fitted, then the car did not get a build plate and number, even if final assembly was completed there. The only way to get an idea is from the date of manufacture. Anything before the start of the A9Y production run is a HDT assembled wagon. This one MAY be a mock up assembled from Calais parts, but i doubt it. The colour scheme is a popular one for the HDT assembled ones. They made 40 HDT Designer Series Calais wagons, and many of those had a similar colour scheme. This one does not have a designer series dash badge, so i doubt it is a Designer series, just a regular HDT assembled one. Still rare though. Hope that clears things up for you. Like VLTWhite1, I am a Calais wagon nut. Hence the username :P

If it is a mock HDT wagon, they had all the right parts... Easiest way to tell, is by the carpeted wagon compartment. The HDT spec ones had carport all round, sides, floor, tailgate, and on the back of the back seat. And the parts are not full carpet, they have the vinal trim around the edges. Wish i had seen it earlier. Its identical to mine, except mine is white and RB30T.

Rare colour too. Rear compartment trim also looks consistent with being a HDT Calais wagon so I'd say it's the real deal. It's probably the only real way to confirm these.

I wonder if you can find out if it is a genuine HDT through the original dealers records - surely they would have some record that links the VIN number (or body number etc) to HDT when the dealer took delivery of the car or sold it. Or at least the VIN number to Calais. Sorry that this is getting way off the A9Y thread topic.

dealer records would be long gone I'd imagine, if the dealer is still in existence even plus if they did exist they'd be archived and they wouldn't pay someone to search for you unless you paid

I guess having a database of the history of VL wagons would be a good thing to have access to. Gradually aquiring the info from dealers and then entering it into a database would make a good project for a group of like minded VL wagon enthusiasts - I guess it would require a bit of money raised from fundraising - cruises etc. Just an idea.

You need to contact HDT direct with the details from the car. Body Number, VIN, Engine Number to confirm mine I basically gave them everything off the car. Then they can tell you how it was optioned. Only thing I need to find for mine is the HDT steering wheel!
