do exhaust 2 1/4" extractors highflow catalytic converter, panel highflow filter standard airbox (dont cut a CAI into the metal of the car you will regret it) do this as well as a thorough service and tune-up and the car will run fine. maybe some headwork and maybe a manual conversion. all that will put you in a good position for a later turbo upgrade and you havent splashed and wasted cash. theres a thread here with all of the info you will ever need. http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=1158 I'd strongly suggest also spending time on brake rebuilds / upgrades / suspension / diff rebuild. all of this will have you a much safer and better performing car. faster isnt everything slowing down and handling can make a car feel much faster but also safer on the roads.

I wouldn't touch the head (port / polish) like you mention. it will cost a bit, and all the effort removing it all / reassembling correctly Why don't you do a stereo or something ? there are plenty of little DIY touch ups VL's need these days, even repainting trims or bumpers make it look 10x better. The untouched RB30 will be your best friend when its turbo time!!!! (said in Arnie voice)

Serviced it fully before taking it off the road, seems to be a new problem so I'm not too sure. Manual for the moment isn't looking likely as I just want it on the road ASAP
