Good info there
I installed a boost gauge and increased the fuel pressure reg and retarded the timing to 10 degrees. This improved it out of site until the engine got up to temp where boost spike just over 10 psi and you guessed it farking pinging again.
Will sent to the tuner now I'm over it lol

Gday mate i just turboed mine and i had the samebproblem. Just keep retarding the timing bit by bit untill it stops mate. Advanceing it makes it worse. Try that and c how u go.

no offense, and im going to cop flaming for this but I dont care.
When you do or buy dodgy conversions this sorta stuff happens.
spend money in the right places and avoid this crap

Mines fine mate. Didn't have to pay mega bucks and the thing puts a smile on my face every drive. So I think ur incorrect there. Just a few things u need to tinker around with to get it goin right. No biggy

If you suspect the ECU, send it to me and I'll check it has infact a turbo calibration (memcal) in it.
I've seen heaps going around that either just have the Turbo metal covers and are infact NA ecu's or it has some bodgy ebay chip in it that isn't designed to run even a lawn mower properly.
note: The NA or Turbo ECU can work perfectly without the knock sensors installed if calibrated correctly.
Also, if you find that by reducing the ignition BTDC (from the 4th notch) to say the first or second notch from the left helps, I can then reprogram your ecu in that particular area so it doesn't ping by the amount you reduce it by.
By reprogramming the ecu, the initial timing can be set back to factory, which in turn will help maintain cruise economy, emissions, and throttle response, but under load the ecu will automatically pull timing back to illiminate pinging to where I set it for you.
First get a mechanic to ensure that what you are hearing is infact pinging and not rod knock or lifter chatter.

Mine pings at WOT, above 4500 in 3rd gear only. I think its just normal for an NA conversion with no intercooler.
Yes its dodgy but i couldnt give a ****, its an NA conversion, not a ferrari engine. Petros is right.

I've seen alot of this kind of failure. whether its pinging or too much boost.
it still is easy to prevent a blow up than it is to fix one.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

put a cooler on it and it will fix it.
i turbo'd my n/a motor running high comp and no cooler and it ping'd it head off. put a cooler on happy days. high comp+turbo= dont mix
as much as i retarted the timiing it would still ping less and less but i was going down to 0 deg....

If anything you should retard the timing more than 15 before top dead center.

i had my highcomp running 7psi no cooler and it never pinged and ran beautiful.i was just using stock vlt injectors.vlt ecu and 3inch exhaust

yeah i started at 15 and worked my way back. but i was running 10psi not standard boost

Doesn't the ecu retard the timing if it's pinging??
Knock sensors in these ECU's is like waiting for it to blow up before it saves the engine!

If you take more timing out, the engine will become very lazy, go through fuel like its free and not give you the extra performance you were after to start with.
Best sort the problem out... 5psi on a high comp. should be ok. but really boring. Anything more and it will need lowering comp ratio so it doesn't die on those hot days to come.
I've made tunes for those who add turbo's to high comp setups and we end up a pulling back timing under load to stop the rattle. The result,
engines are nice when cruising but just don't get up and do much when called upon.
There is only one way around high comp, thats changing the fuel to something with less energy and high octane like E85, Methanol, or even adding a water/methanol intake cooling mist to the intake stream.
Then you can crank it up and feel some horses. In the long run, a thicker head gasket is the best way to go until the motor comes out for a set of dished pistons.

some get lucky, could be because the Cambelt is a notch out. (as some workshop manuals are printed in correctly).
The retardation of the intake/ex timing gives the engine less time to build up dynamic compression in the comp cycle, this could contribute to the late onset of detonation.

Mine did the same, i doubt its anything to do with the cam, they run fine on stock boost high comp.

How many reco's the engine has been through has an affect.
each time the block is decked, each time the head is skimmed, all changes the compression, usually increasing it.
do you remenber what the point to point tooth count on yours was?
