T04z is an older compressor design. There is better turbos out there these days for the money.
The newer GTX models from Garrett and some of the Precision Billets are quite good. Precision have a big following in the promod small cubes big turbo crowd and they have quite a range of larger turbos with rears to suit smaller capacity motors.
A 62mm sized turbo (35r aka 3592r aka 35/40 The precision 6268 etc) on a 4K converter would be so much fun I'm not sure I would bother with a larger turbo. The instant tyre fryer, mash it and powerslide.

I've always been against going with the 'norm' in regards to modifying my car, and in particular turbo choice, however being in a few vl's running gt3540s with the driveline to suit really puts into perspective why they are so popular. You stated in the first post that the car might hit the track a couple of times a year, which really doesnt warrant running a drag setup all year round. Even in a manual the 3540's really pick up and go without much waiting time, making them really streetable. Run the 1.06 rear if you're interested in making 30-50 extra hp at the sacrifice of a couple of hundred rpm of spool time, which, with the right stally, won't even be noticable

I think its funny australians go from a 56-58mm hi-flow to a 60mm turbo to a 74mm and complain about lag..***n derr...theres a fair few choices inbetween, i have said it a million times, a 66-71mm turbo is best for a street/race Rb30(more street car) (excluding the T04Z ****box)
Converter will make or break setup though..
cheers

I went back from a T04Z to a GT35 on my car and it is so much nicer to drive. Honestly I wouldn't go anything bigger on a street car which makes the occasional trip to the track

I said the same thing. I think the guy just wants someone to agree with him that putting an oversized turbo on is a good idea.

Interesting thread, sums up alot of the questions that buzz around my head. Recently finished building my car (im laughing at the phrase finished cos things never are) i needed a new turbo and a really good deal came up with a 6boost manifold, Tial wastegate and garrett T51r, now all said and done, i find the car boring to drive on the street, i need a big open road for it to come on song. yeah the car has a 6 point cage and i plan on doing lots of racing. In the process of having converter changed to hopefully improve lag, if not i will have a brand new t51r powder coated all gloss black up for sale and going to the popular 35/40.
Feedback??

Yeah I think I have the big one as boost comes on more like 4500rpm, gonna try a few things and see what happens. I got a 5000 stalky and it's not right. Think we have a similar set up with c4 from memory

Setup setup setup setup... people forget this. A car isn't a turbo, or an engine or a gearbox. Its how it is designed and comes together as a package that makes it.
If you want a large ass turbo, then make sure you have an engine, gearbox and diff ratio to suit it.

i'm a bit worried now, like most people a got a deal on a rb26 and managed to pick up a t04z greddy manifold greddy 50mm gate and 4 inch dump with all lines for 1k, i don't have a large stall (might be something i'll have to look into) i'm hopping it the same feel as i had with the rb30 and the gt35, loved how it just came on boost instantly and smashed tyres! I always loved midrange, smashed a many more powerful car with half the power, mainly cause the car made 215kw at 3500 rpm only made an extra 25 kw in the next 3k but the midrange was insane and ran 11.6

Isn't saying "just put a 5k stall in it" as bad as just throwing a gt42 on anythnig? Pretty broad statement isnt it haha
