Throw an Ls motor in and be done with it! Cheap performance and a very easy engine to upgrade at a later date, I know I would be going Ls if I had the cash money!

Sounds pricey mate, I got quoted less than that with a fully forged bottom end ready for up to 1500HP with an Rb26 head, so much better torque down low and comes on boost quicker, or else yes go the LS1 and turbo that !

For $10k+ I would expect extensive head work, some of the best gear put into the motor, including expensive gear such as i-beam rods, tough oil pump, asr sump, ati race harmonic balancer etc etc. Go RB25, or something else.

I see no point in removing cam etc. It's all about doing it properly and efficiency is the key, no point taking an item which is only worth a few hundred out...not worth it. It's too significant. Also what turbo are you using, GT35/40 or similar?
