yep typical of a lean out, probably ran too much boost
to get out of it on the cheap you could get another piston a light hone replace the rings throughout
might cost you 5-700 but yeh its a botch repair
best of rebuilding it

How is it the previous owners fault? This guy could have been thrashing it flat out... who is to know?
It's the chance you take when buying a modified car, there are no warranties.

Sounds like you've dropped a valve. ie. broken spring

a broken valve spring wouldn't cause white smoke, and if you drop a valve i think the whole engine rotating thing might be a problem

I know what you mean but you cant go accusing the old owner of anything, it may or may not have been on its way out... who knows. Imagine someone knocking on your door a couple of days after buying a car and asking for the money back because they blew it up... I know what I'd say.
Anyway, do we have a verdict on this engine yet?

yeah i know what your saying. if it were a couple days after i would say get ****ed because you dont know what they could have been doing to it. but cmon mate if this thing ****s itself on the way home, even if he had it on the limter the whole way then the damage would have been done before and the old owner could jsut have been tryna offload it .. especially being a vlt the bloke probly had a bit of fun with it the night before selling it as most ppl unfortunaltly do.

Thats right it is the chance you take but the attitude of the seller is what was most dissapointing.

I know the feeling. I had an $10k engine pop on me the morning after I picked a car up. It's the most gut wrenching feeling knowing you just spent all your money on a car and have no money to fix it - mine cost triple yours too!

try ebay, wreckers, the forums. you want to try and get one in a car running and make it a series 2 block you can see it from the oil and water line galleries
I paid 18500 for my car just turned 18.
Motor went, diff went, clutch went, needed new cooler piping, tailshaft, turbo. All gone
Another 15k later it's still not on the roAd.
**** feeling goodluck mate
I feel your pain guys, but theres a latin term "caveat emptor" or "let the buyer beware" that is so true when it comes to cars.
If you have little mechanical knowledge, you would be crazy to purchase a car privately without first having it inspected by a mechanic, RACV, etc.......especially an $18k VL.
Obviously modified cars are a different beast, but for a run of the mill car, it's not worth the hassle buying or selling privately. At least if you go through a dealer you get some form of warranty.
Hope you can get it sorted with minimal pain.
