The car is in Cambridge so I will need to make a few measurements to see what I will need. Cheers for the pics Hayden. Answers another one of my questions about using the gearbox cross member. Been looking online for the regulations on these, and it seems like it's a bit of a grey area. This is from the Low Volume Vehicle Standards document: A front-engine, rear wheel drive low volume vehicle that has undergone an engine conversion, or has had its factory-fitted engine significantly modified, such that a significant increase in power or torque has resulted, must be fitted with an effective 360-degree front drive-shaft loop, mounted within 150mm rearward of each front drive-shaft universal. I wonder what they class, or how they determine what a 'significant increase in power or torque' is?? This came from a forum on the lvvta website; The NZ Hobby Car Technical Manual has a minimum specification of 50x6mm for a drive-shaft safety loop fabricated from flat-section material. Other requirements are that the drive-shaft safety loop and it's attachment system must be extremely well engineered so as to be capable of containing the massive energy of a disengaging and rotating drive-shaft. Your LVV Certifier will need to assess whether you've met these requirements for both the loop itself (welding attachment in particular), and of it's attachment to the vehicle. The loop should also be attached to the vehicle with two bolts per side. Also worth noting is that if the vehicle has a two-piece drive-shaft, it must have a drive-shaft safety loop for each shaft section. Technically speaking, I'm not sure Hayden's front loop conforms to the standards, but seeing as his inspector passed it, it must be fine. Grey!
