I was going to buy a WRX at one stage but when I jumped in one I allmost had a panic attack. They are so small & cramped inside.

Everything from Ver.7 and older is rat shit (unless STI), they're slow and not that reliable. Ver.8/9/10 STI are the only WRX's I'd buy

STI's are by far a better car than standard wrx, but EVO's are even better imo anyway, brothers evo just got tuned, exhaust only 230awkw on 23 psi, flys.

If you have $15K to spend and don't want/need a four door get an R32 GTR, they hammer like hell & launch like nothing else! a mate of mine built his GTR for under $20K (including everything) & it does low 11s on a 17" street tyre & is running the standard box with a brass button clutch.

I'd have an STI over an EVO any day, the guys I've known with EVO's have had lots of problems and expensive parts to fix them. My bro had an EVO 5 and an STI Ver.8, and although the STI was a newer car it was 10x better than the EVO in every way

Ive owned my 05 wrx for 2 and a half years now and wouldnt swap it for any holden, ford, mitsubishi or anything other than a euro car. As far as build quiality you cant compare it to a holden or a ford. Even after 120,000k's theres still not 1 rattle in the interior, and my car is fairly low too. Id say spend that little bit extra and get yourself into and 03-05. You can pick up an 03 with same k's as mine for as low as 17K now for a stock one. As far as mods go you can make upto 200atw fairly easily on these cars. In saying that i wouldnt go for much more than that on a wrx bottom end. Mods to make roughly 190-200atw: - Turboxs exhaust 3" TB into 2.5" diff back - $999 - VF34P20 - $700-1000 (depending on condition of turbo and where you look) - Silicone intake - $200-400 for a good brand not some ebay cheapy - STi TMIC - $300-500 once again depending on where you look - STi Pink 550cc jectas - $200-$500 depending on condition - Walbro 342 intank - $150 - Tune $600-1000 depending on tuner FMIC is not needed for this power range so i would bother spending the money on it. Only real complaints issues with the WRX's as stated is the gearboxes. Up till bugeye 2001 they are prone to breaking easily. After that they are a little better but not much. Understeer.. yes they suffer from this a bit, but a 24mm Rear swaybar and 22mm front swaybar will change this. 05 wrx's suffered from rear end 'knock' which was due to the grease in the rear right strut drying up quickly. Lots of D.I.Y's on WRX forums about how to fix this. If its done more than 100,000k's obviously make sure the timing belt has been done. Other than that ive had no probs with mine apart from going through 4 window motors (common problem in the 03-05) but an aftermarket one which is half the price of genuine fixed this problem. Honestly, i'd say go for it. Ive driven monaros, vy clubbys, xr6t's and not one of them drives near as nice as a later model wrx. Yes they may be a little quicker, but they are boats lol Plus 4 wheel skating in the wet is much more fun than rear wheel drive.

Yes they may be a strong gearbox but very loose feel to them, they feel very fragile in the in the evo 7/8/9 and thats the main complaint you hear from an evo owner. Having said that im not sure which model evo you are refering to though.

My budget is around 14, but im looking at spending around 10-12, Was considering ba xr6 turbo's , VU SS utes etc but want to get out of the v8's for a bit and i used to own a bf xr6 (non Turbo) so wanted to go something diffrent.. ---------- Post added 21-07-10 at 14:00 ---------- Quote: Originally Posted by Woggster [View Post] If you have $15K to spend and don't want/need a four door get an R32 GTR, they hammer like hell & launch like nothing else! a mate of mine built his GTR for under $20K (including everything) & it does low 11s on a 17" street tyre & is running the standard box with a brass button clutch. Not really into skylines , GTR's are nice and very quick but not my cup of tea mate, same as 180-200sx cant stand them. if i go jap will be a WRX or STI. Most evo's are out my price range as they were what i was first looking at Would be my daily , and would be driveing it a bit hard but not thrashing it thru the gears , launches etc. so basically the newer WRX or STI the better and more reliable is the jist in getting? Personal preference i prefer the look of the older shape over the bug eye. SO gear boxes seem to be the major issue with them, what about standard clutches? they fry pretty easyilyim guessing. was looking at buying one with mods already and lower k's( preferably) hopeing around the 200awkw would keep me happy for a bit .

Surely gear boxes are only a real drama with the big launches? AVO get a huge amount of wxr's through, and really not that many of them are getting gearboxes done, hardley any infact.

yeah you'd think driveing day to day , i mean give it a bit thru the gears but flat changing a bit they should hold up shouldnt they?

WRXs HATE big rev launches & clutch dumps! The box will **** itself. Like others have said you can find 03-05 model WRXs for $15-$19K in good condition with under 100,000KM. Or you could get 2000 model Rex in good condition with under 80,000KMs for around $15K. Both Rexs are nice, but the shape of the 1999/2000 model is very nice & since they are lighter than the later model ones you only need a few mods to get them moving & handling well.

If you cared for your WRX you wouldn't be doing limiter launches anyway. I drove an 05 WRX with semi slicks that a guy at work had... I can safely say that if it were my daily I'd lose my license. It feels like an ultra smooth go kart. They're so much fun... I'd love one! My only complaint would be a lack of power in standard form.

Nah I think it was standard, except suspension and tyres. Handled very well but just didn't seem to have much poke. You can corner the thing at like 80kmh and it feels like a normal corner, just sticks. I was just expecting a rush of boost when it came on having never been in a rexy... but kick didn't come hard. If you were pumping 200rwkw or more they'd be hell fun.

yeah they deffently sound like a fun car to drive thats for sure, im still tossed up wheather i go down the WRX path, dont wanna spend big bucks as id rather go a VY SS ute 6spd but if i can get away with a cheap rex then id be happy, but trying to weight up the options as almost everyone has said how bad the gearbox/clutches are on them...

Early 99's have the good computer, which with boost and exhaust the cars will run 13.0-13.1 at 105-6mph. Stick a vF 22-34 on them and run 17-18psi and they go 12.8-12.5 at 108-111mph. The other 2 99 computers you can't do a thing with them, exhaust and boost and they just go slower, the computer takes out timing and add fuels, so you need a remap to make any power, same with the 2000model think. Just remember that fuel pumps randomnly fail on 99-2000 models aswell, and blow the motor ---------- Post added 21-07-10 at 21:43 ---------- The problem is clutch, anything not COMPLETY standard and they will just blow changing gears fast....just ask my wife..lol, and my mates with them they've all had 4-5 boxes. As for there ****ness...lol the biggest workshops for cars in s.a, started long after everyone else, owns theres own premises, not rents like everyone else and is the only workshop with 2 shifts on to work on them, they are that busy in adelaide to fix these ****heaps ,guess what, they only work on WRX'S, ha,ha have a mate that works there, theres millions of broken boxes there, adelaide is dogbox/straightcut wrx central , every wrx has one nearly here. And the motors, what a POS, unless there a 2.5, they have the VE thats worse than a gemini motor(no **** a gemini motor with the same turbo would crap on one), and the 2.5 only make power like a typical modern 2.0. the ej20's STI's are great, forged pistons, same toothpick rods as the wrx ej20's , still exit the block at the same time..lol Buy a VYSS ute, get a exhaust/OTR and remap, and then have fun trying to work out how to stop them axle tramping..lol cheers darren Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
