20-07-10, 22:01 GMT+10#21 Yeah.. Spools for n/a guys helping them get sideways in the wet since 92...
There are better options out there but as always you will pay for it. For me personally if the car is only on the strip I go a full spool. If it is ever driven on the street the skipping and the carry-on is just to annoying for me. Its just personal preference.
LSD by design wear out, start rapping nuts on a regular basis and it will wear out. The factory holden unit is not designed to do that. It is all around the point and shoot straight line stuff for when your towing a caravan, pulling a boat out etc etc.

20-07-10, 22:25 GMT+10#23 I only like the boot out feeling a raped lsd diff has to offer. If VLs came out factory 9" or a half decent lsd it would be a different story but borg warner lsd diffs are pox.

20-07-10, 22:48 GMT+10#24 Its a work ute and its had more things replaced than I have had hot dinners. It sat at Ford not long ago for 4 weeks for a mysterious clunk that turned out to be a sheared off swaybar mount I think it must have been a Friday car...

21-07-10, 01:31 GMT+10#25 Spool + 25 spline axels = asking for trouble.
The trouble is when owning a fast car you dont have much of a choice - either gamble with the 28 spline LSD (which are really good if maintained) go a spool and put up with the terrible low speed problems and eventually get defected or go a expensive kaaz unit.

21-07-10, 07:16 GMT+10#26 What Kaaz units can you fit into a 28 spline LSD? Id go a Kaaz over rebuilding my LSD.

21-07-10, 12:53 GMT+10#28 Yes i have owned a spooled car
Yes i feel i have enough power to comment on the situation
My LSD cost me $50 to build (including axles), it's been in there nearly 4 years and has not faulted. If you've seen it at easternats you'll know how it gets driven. it's run 60-70 9-10second passes. People need to learn a) how LSD's work and b) how to drive without wrecking them and yes you can still go gutter to gutter without wrecking them. If you are a hack and don't care, just continue with your spool.

LSD's destroy themselves very quickly when one wheel spins faster than the other, the main reason they do this is people try to start a skid when they are spinning at different speeds, ie as soon as you turn your steering wheel the back wheels are moving at different speeds and the LSD has been unlocked. From this point it is very hard for the LSD to lock back up again especially if there is more load on one wheel than the other, and there always is in a live axle setup as the left wheel pushes down harder on the road than the right, ever noticed its almost always the right one that spins? So basically you wreck them when you're starting the skid, and the same applies when you're finishing the skid, if you have not much power and you're trying your very hardest to keep the skid going then you can cause the same problem, as the wheels slow closer to roadspeed one will grip before the other, as this is happening you should get off the power if you want it to live.
In short, if you get them spinning when the car is stationary or moving in a straight line, and you get off it in the same manner your LSD should last substantially longer, another point is they are shimmed WAY too loosely from factory, change the springs or shim them up.

Having owned a few cars now with some pretty serious HP and wanting to drive them on the street a spool daily driven is rubbish from my point of view. For someone else they maybe OK. I don't like the way they flog out the rear end of the car. All your bushed wear like crazy. Late model IRS rear cradles are prone to cracking, 28 spline axles when you have real tyres and HP will twist and break. As a weekender no problem, as a daily which needs to be reliable no.
Im not a huge stickler for insurance reasons but this is another why a spool on the road 24/7 is not a good idea. Breaking an axle under full load does wonderful things to the way the vehicle is pointing. I would hate to be on the other end of the investigation as to why you went head on into another car.

17-08-10, 11:23 GMT+10#33 well ive been using a spool diff on the streets (only cos i didnt know any better). the car has 300kw to the rear wheels. and i THINK ive f*cked it
so im looking for some help.
i noticed as im driving sometimes it makes a metal on metal clicking noise. the noise increses in speed with the increase of speed in the car, but isnt always there, the clicking noise is worse/louder when im turning (especially left?!?!)? and i have a locker/mini spool borg warner diff. ive had problems with my car breaking uni joints/CV joints in the tailshaft before but the uni joints all look fine when i put it on the hoist. do you guys think this is a tailshaft noise or a diff noise?

17-08-10, 14:13 GMT+10#34 V8 supercars use full spool diffs, wouldnt exactly call them poor man racers. Personal opinion is always going to differ about spools vs lsd, sh1t box VE GTS did 70,000kms and the diff had to be replaced, worn out, and I didnt cut that many hoops with it either. Picked up a wavetrac for the 9 inch in the vl for $1200 from the states, 35 spline center, should be interesting to see how it goes, similar to a harrop tru trac, but about $500 cheaper.

17-10-10, 10:00 GMT+10#35 so i got my last axle fixed but once again my spool went boom last tuesday night. pulled the drum all off got the axle out and figured out that its just the very end bit of the axle with the spline on it stuck in the spool how do i get it out ? i took the other axle out in hope i could push it through. there is a bar through the middle of the spool but i can still get a small screw driver past it. do i just keep bashing it til it comes out? is there another way?
any help or thoughts would greatly help

The only problem with them is the price. If I could get a group buy going I could possibly get them cheaper but I doubt it. A group buy for Harrop these days is 200 units
A better driver would make it look better but example of how predictable the tru track is.
Another guy with a tru-trac centre
The owner of the place said it was just like having a spool but without the downsides.
