You *WILL* lose distance compared to a halogen globe. The HID's will appear brighter only because of the amount of light scattering that wouldn't normally exist in a headlight that is designed for HID. The light scattering is what blinds other motorists. HID housings have cut off shields to trap the scattered light beams.
Best thing to do is to put in some decent halogen globes.
I also bought a pair of DEPO headlights (not yet installed), and they have a relector that sits just in front of the globe to reflect light from the globe back into the main reflector to increase the light output.

I brought that kit in the ebay link above (full kit) it arrived yesterday and i installed them straight away, they look awesome and are very very white, so im happy, yet to test them at night yet though, didn't end up driving anywhere
Agressive - Yeh mate there 2 knobs on the back of the lights, bottom one tilts up and down and top one moves the beam side to side, ive tilted mine down a fair bit but i was the same, spinning for ages and didnt think it was doing anything, but i could feel it grabbing and i could see the beam move down, for memorys twist it clockwise to go down i think...
