This thread is for reference as a guide for new comers to VL turbo's and RB30 engines, not a 'how much power will I make?' thread. ---------- Post added 01-06-10 at 18:53 ---------- Quote: Originally Posted by FST-747 [View Post] turbo on a n/a s1 motor would blow it to bits, unless u got the s2 block They have identical internals so your claim is void.

VL Turbo's are relatively easy to gain power upgrades with minimal cost and effort. If you are new to the VL Turbo scene here are a few modifications you should look at and the power range you will achieve. Note, these are rough estimates only. Performing modifications does not guarantee power rating. Every dyno will read differently, the best and most accurate way or measuring power is on the quarter mile. Basic Modifications: - 3 Inch exhaust from turbo back - Front mount Intercooler - Adjustable boost control - K & N Panel filter You will be looking at about the $1000 mark for something like this. It is always recomended when increasing boost levels past factory levels to have the car put on a dyno to check Air : Fuel ratios. If anyone has any suggestions to add to this post feel free to add them below. I have the basic mods 3inch dump from the turbo (removed that sh*t wastegate setup) 3 inch exhaust hiflow cat and one muffler at the rear near the tank, i have a standard turbo with an intercooler running 2.5inch into the cooler and 3inch out back to the throttle body. motor is a na motor with a acl copper head gasket standard squash plus 1.6mm for decomp, im still running a na computer, i have got a set of 450cc injectors and a ebay adjustable fuel reg, im running a r33 skyline box (the na ones just didnt last for some reason) port and polish (home job) and i havent had it dynoed tuned or anything yet i have just been playing around with it myself, and the car has currently ran a 13.2 @106mph on 9PSI(with heaps of wheelspin) at willowbank a couple of weeks ago all up the mods on this car including doing the turbo conversion is rougly at the 1200 mark some parts i have done barter exchange (welding for parts) like my gear box and cooler, other things i have used mandrel bent exhaust pipe for my cooler piping basically everything on this car i have done myself in my shed at home the car has never seen a workshop since i have owned the car, there are cheap options out there if you can tinker with it and if you can get the right info to help. im currently starting to play around with water injection so i can wind the boost up to 15psi and throw some slicks on and see if i can break into something around the 12.5 mark, i know people will laugh and say you cant do it but who whould have thought that 5 years ago vls would be doing 8.7sec passes Ps playing around with your cam timing can make so much difference to your combo one or two teeth can make the difference between gaining and loosing power

Exhaust can be expensive, as stated in my previous post im a boiler maker and i have my own tig welder so i make all my own stuff from piping to catch cans to surge tanks, everything is done in my shed ! my exhaust cost me 200 my muffler was 50 and my cat was worth 100 i cut all my flanges on a profile cutter at work and my bends i got off a mate for $10 a bend.

I think for around for under $1000, you can get probably around 250 FWKW out of a bog stock VL turbo, mods including :- - Front mount intercooler - 3 to 4 inch custom fabricated turbo to cat converter dump pipe - 3 inch hi flow cat - 3 inch mandrel bent straight through exhaust system. - Increase the turbos boost If you're really pushing for around 300 kw or more (about the ceiling for a stock RB30 head),you could go for a T3-T4 hybrid turbo, then you'd have to start looking at the fuelling & ignition side of things (fuel delivery, pump size, pipes, swirl pot, aftermarket ECU or Niztune, higher flowing fuel injectors, etc) I've just settled for a VY V8 for an every day driver because they put out around that sort of power & performance anyway with relatively minor tweaks (higher flowing mandrel bent exhaust system, extractors, tune - MAF or MAFLESS, diff ratio change), I'm not sure how much the insurance (greenslip) is for a VL turbo for someone over the age of 30, but I only pay $360 per year for the VY. I'm sure the comprehensive insurance for a VL turbo no matter what is quite expensive too. I've heard of a fuel consumption figure for a modified VL turbo of 12 - 13L/100 kms but I'm not sure if that's on the highway or not, I've heard of a stock figure of 9.5 - 10L/100 kms out of a stock one when it's not being floored on the highway. I'm getting 11.5L/100 kms out of the LS1 (mixed town & country driving) out of the VY with a Clubsport diff ratio (3.9:1) and an aftermarket exhaust system & tune (not MAFLESS) and it's putting out around the power output of a VY Clubsport anyway, I get down to around 10 - 10.5L/100 kms with straight highway driving. Yeah, no one knew about that until I floored it in town.

I would imagine it would be around $600 for a daily driver.

Turbos are quite an easy car to get large power gains with low costs and just as low effort. If you're new to the whole modification scene, we've listed a series of modifications you should look at, and show what sort of power ranges you can achieve from them. Please note that while this post should serve as a rough guide, not all cars will achieve the same results, and as such, the best way to measure your power is by running a quarter mile. Basic Modifications 3" (three inch) Exhaust from turbo back Front-mounted Intercooler Adjustable Boost Control K&N Panel Filter For the above modifications you will be looking at around $1,000, depending on where you source your parts from. As always, when increasing the boost levels past the standard factory levels, it is recommended that you put the car on a dyno and check it's Air to Fuel ratio. ------------------- 2013 MERCEDES BENZ SL-CLASS (http://www.ezdia.com/epad/2013-mercedes-benz-sl-price-review/7980)

With todays prices a cooler with piping can set you back $700+

very true mus, 3inch exhaust and dump pipe thats around $1000. cooler setup $600 Boost controler is around 200-400 for a good one, K&N panel $100-140 so that basic setup is more around the $2000 mark
