Its just so easy for these kids to get high powered cars XR's SV6's r within budgets and have power we older guys could dream of when we were 17.
Our parents probably said the same thing, when they had 100hp hotted up cars and the later models where their children were getting into were 150hp etc. It's always going to go up each model because thats what the customer demands.
Either way, any car in the market can do 120kmh +, doesnt matter how much power it has. The message needs to get through to the person controlling the pedal to the right.

17-01-10, 22:41 GMT+10#25 on the news it stated how the driver was a repeat offender.
I just cant understand how youd loose control at that bit of plenty rd, the bit before that is alot worse

17-01-10, 23:29 GMT+10#26 as mentioned above i heard it was a non turbo xr6 and was legal for him to drive on p plates and also as mentioned above you can comfortably do those sorts of speeds in a hyundai excel its just driver error not the car.
being an 09 model i would have thought it would have all that stability control etc.
rip to all and condolences to all familys and freinds.

i know i can be a d|ck at times but your just an absolute c0ck. seriously! i personally know the father of one of the boys who passed away & not only has he lost a son but he has a 15 year old daughter in hospital too. I know he would be insulted, angry and wouldnt appreciate stupid comments like " she will slit her writsts & i bet others are betting on it too"...actually makes me wonder why i am even replying to such a imbecile comment.
condolences goes out to Nick & his family - such a tragic loss of a young life & wish a speedy recovery to his daughter, she has amazing people around her to help her get back on track. We all do silly things on the road but to do it with passengers let alone a overloaded car is just plain old stupid.

18-01-10, 08:01 GMT+10#30 RIP
We all make mistakes and do silly things, some of use get away with it and others pay the ultimate consequence. I think we can all take a moment to consider the ramifications of any and all actions we do. The driver made quite a few "bad" choices before they ended up where they did.
I would expect with this incident and the public perception that more stringent hoon laws etc will come out of this. If they can see common sense and implement a comprehensive licencing testing instead of jeez you can reverse park well system maybe all drivers will be better off. Possibly it should be part of the school curriculum, with a pass/fail subject matter. If you don't understand you don't get a licence. In saying this it won't save everyone, as you can't change human behaviour that easily but maybe it will help.

The roadside is littered now with junk too small to interest police.
A blurred photograph someone in the car treasured shows a guy cuddling a girl from behind. There are no faces now. Just a blood stain.
Driver Steve Johnstone's empty pay packets lie on the grass with mobile phone parts, car trim, a vodka Cruisers box and a girl's pink make-up case.
Mid morning in Mill Park, there is not much to see and, for scores of local kids, too much to feel.
Young men slump against the fence, heads down on their forearms, crying their hearts out. Girls who look 16, tops, stare over at the scene with blank eyes.
Gemma Walters forces herself to talk, heartsick and bewildered.
Anthony Iannetta, a skinny youth with a goofy fringe, was one of her best friends.
"He saved his sister's (Elissa's) life because he moved in front of her," Gemma says, then pain turns to anger. "It's not fair. It's bulls---. They shouldn't be driving that fast, being that stupid.
"Drugs and alcohol, and people trying to be heroes."
One boy comes in a Holden Racing Team jacket. Others bring flowers to start the roadside shrine.
Jacqueline Johnstone, Steve's stepmum, gathers his friends together in a group hug. "He was a loving boy, but he's been through a lot of problems," she said.
And been a problem for Freda Chahine, who weeps nearby.
She didn't know the young men, never saw their faces, but felt and saw the car fly past seconds before impact. "It was like a rocket," Ms Chahine said.
Plenty Rd is wide, smooth and straight. Locals say it's too good.
Black tyre marks point to where a big oak was smashed out of the ground and beyond it to Matthew Villani's back fence. If the tree hadn't, his house would probably have stopped the Falcon. "This road used to be full of trees. Now they are disappearing, all these cars smashing into them," he said.
A council mulcher turns the oak into chips and all that is left is the stump and a crater.
Kids in T-shirts hug themselves against the cold, looking over at the nothing left. Rain falls on the footpath, on a blood stain.
There is not much to see, and that is the horror of it.
There is nothing to show for five young lives.

18-01-10, 09:28 GMT+10#32 I feel for the passengers and the familys, but the driver? no way.
There is no excuse to loose it on that section of plenty rd.
Reading the article, it said he swerved onto the median.. i think somone was playing stuipd games..
Tragic that others had to pay with their lives and children.
If somone is looking for death/serious injury in thir actions, noone should be surprised when they find it.

no one knows how exactly it did happend but I don't think you should pay out the driver . Just pay respects to all of them as no one deserves that.

18-01-10, 10:33 GMT+10#34 This is on the Victorian Governments head plain and simple!
ANDRA has been fighting for a purpose built facility in Melbourne. Red tape and political bull**** are to blame for the youth of Victoria taking it to the street.
These kids have lost their lives for no reason other than the driver was trying to show pony on the street that is fact there is no reason to have been doing those speeds.
My thoughts and prayers to all involved but how many people need to die before things change...?

18-01-10, 10:47 GMT+10#36 a race track is NOT going to change things like this, its pure stupidity getting 6 people in a 5 seater car and doing 140km/h in a 80km/h zone...there was no drag racing involved..and as others have also said it could have happened in any car 140km/h is not hard to achieve in most vehicles.
condolences to all the family and friends of those involved, im not going to comment much on the driver as ive heard a fair bit about him off people who know him, all ill say is i have no sympathy for him and wish he had of survived to see what hes done to what he would have called his friends, and their families.
RIP.

18-01-10, 12:40 GMT+10#38 just heard alchohol was involved on JJJ news. apparently someone at the party came forward and said that they had seen the driver drinking.
i am not stating that to make any point, just repeating what i have heard.
i think anyone who missed it should read duke57tt's post, the last one on page 1. he mentioned driver education as a part of curriculum. they teach us drug, alchohol and sex in schools why not driving habbits aswell since it is a hot topic. it is a minority of people who will not get a licensce.
this is sad for the families, friends and all of the emergency services involved. also to whoever mentioned it where did you get the information that the car was unregistered?

18-01-10, 13:38 GMT+10#39 s1roller it said on the news the car was unregistered and he was under passenger restrictions and only was allowed to carry one passenger at a time.
also has come out he may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol which must have impaired his judgement for sure. the bit of road where the crash occured is dead straight pretty much so to be bouncing off gutters and over medium strips he was either off his face or showing off in front of the young girl or mates.
obviously he has not takin a minute to take into account he has the lives of 5 young kids in the palms of his hands and has not only takin his own life but everybody else with him.
things like this shouldnt occur and when are people going to stop blaming cars and hi performance when its the person in control of the car to start with.
if everybody keeps blaming it on hi performance cars it wont be to long till they start to crush them.
