nope they denote 28spline axles released in vlt and v8s
correct nukz ppl who know nothing should keep their mouth shut and just pretend to be clever

"0578" is a BW78 part number, not related to length.
your apoligy is accepted timmy

you guys have been busy today
My diff i assumed was a 25 spline single spinner bw
the lsd centre gears and pinion are out of an r31 shilloette with 3.7 gears
and the axles im fairly confident are vlt
I will get some pics up when i get a chance but it just looks like any other bw diff
I had to put all the 25 spline crap back in for this weekend but after that she'll be back up on stands and i can get some pics and measurements etc
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
ok here are some quickies i took on my phone, our cameras getting repaired but i can get some better shots when i find my old camera
is the tail shaft suposed to run in a straight line from gear box to diff? cos mine sits a bit left in the middle where the cv joint thing is
Where are you getting these references to those numbers being vl axles? Ive never heard of anything like this in all the years ive worked on vls..
If your axles are not exactly the same lenght as the 25 spline axles they are either vl wagon axles (same width as vn sedan) or vn sedan axles or onwards..
Ive been through this sh!t about 4 times now and have been roasted once by a lier who swore blind what he was selling me was vl axles but i then found out they were vn sedan axles.
Ive also worked out vl wagon are the same length as vn sedan axles. I have pulled and compared vn sedan and vl wagon axles (same length) when we built a vlt wagon diff.
Also...... Im 99% sure 3.7 is a falcon ratio.. Skyline 6cyl is 3.89 or 3.91 (factory recall ratio 3.89 is noisy) and the crown wheel is slightly further over from where the vl and skyline centres are.. I sold a guy on here a centre once in good faith and then we found / worked out it was a falcon centre with the above mentioned moved over crown wheel spacing when he tried to fit it...
Now when i need an axle i always take a known vl axle to compare.
Ok, so that a Commodore spec BW78 sedan diff housing. That's all I can tell you from those shots. Like carcrazy and a few others have said, if the axles you wish to sue are longer than the ones you originally used, they will never fit.
axles from a vl wagon are the same for sedan. i have personally used axles from a wagon also and shoved them straight into a sedan housing. maybe the diff u had in the wagon was off a vn???? the only difference between wagon diffs and sedan diffs for vls are the mounting points as the shocks sit in different locations.
i fit the axles to the lsd centre not in the housing and measured from flange bit to flange bit on the axles and they measure a bit over 1400mm so if i had vn axles it should measure about 40mm longer than that true?
when i fit the gear into the housing i think the pass side axle is 20mm short and the driver side is 20mm long so i think the housings been modified. something dodge has happened to my car because when i striped it all out and removed the body deadener from the floorpan i can see that the back half of the car has been welded to the front, you can see the join from underneath but ive never noticed before. so i cant be sure what the hells going on with the ass end at this point. ill have to compare measurements with a known vl housing to be sure. I refuse to believe Ive been ripped off with these axles at this stage but ill look into it if the diff measures up correctly

100% wrong man, VL wagon and sedan axles are identical, VN wagon and sedan axles are identical. you cant swap between VL & VN.
these were my spare axels i personally pulled from a spare diff i wrecked out of a vlt stop saying they r vn they r not he has another issue with lsd or something shut all these yoyos up and comepare them to your 25 spline axels and sort it cause its becoming silly now if not send them back in the same manner i sent them to you undamaged and my cousin will use them
cheers steve

Dude.... I know the vl sedan ones fit but the ends of the splines are just in the centre..
I got sold what was apparently a set of vl turbo axles but they were 1inch wider than my original 25 spline ones, i then proceeded to buy probally the last set of vl turbo axles ever from holden and they were the same length as the vl 25 spliners and shorter than my other longer set by 25.4mm (1 inch).
We were building a vl turbo wagon and pulled the axles from that car and put them side by side with the longer axles and they were exactly the same length.
We then proceeded to take them to the diff shop and ask them what they were, they pull out a vn sedan axle (vn written on it) and put it next to it, same length. They then built the vl 28 spline diff with an lsd and these axles. I even took a picture of the two sets of sets of axles side by side but cant find it presently. (correction, i said three but it was actually two) (the car's orginal set and the spare set i had)
I am also so sure i know what im talking about ill that i bet you $100 to prove im wrong.. Im sure Shannon (Wagon01) on here, the builder of the VL turbo wagon will tell you vl wagon axles are longer too.

your wrong mate, just because it had Vn written on it in texta doesnt make it a VN axle.
going from your theory, tell me this, how have I managed to put the guts of my VL wagon 28 spline lsd into the housing pulled from my VL sedan. because they are the same!
you cant say for sure where your axles came from, your argument is flawed.
left VL wagon (sedan) right VN, bad angle but you cant still see the difference.
im glad for you to come to my house, ive got spares vl/vn sedan/wagon diffs, ill be happy to prove you wrong and accept the $100

Found the picture...
I took this about 2/5/06 so it took me a while to find it..
One set is vl wagon 25 spline straight out of the car, the other is 1 inch longer than my 28 spline vl sedan axles.
I couldnt use the pictured 28 spline set because they wouldnt fit my sedans diff.. I have an LSD, maybe shorter or longer ones fit open wheelers or holden changed lengths..
The wagon was march 88 and the sedan was feb 88..

Are they both VL housings behind the axles? Are they both the same width? If so, I see no reason why the sedan and wagon axles should be different lengths.

I can see this going around for days...
Its just a shame the vl wagon is now long gone, id pull an axle out of it and an axle out of my sedan to show the length comparison to a third party.
I kid you not, the axles were exactly 1 inch longer than my brand new vl 28 spline ones i bought from holden, i had the diff professionally built by a diff shop and the same shop then proceeded to do the wagon diff about 6 months later with the axles shown in the pic..
Bit off topic but this talks about the vl to vn diff width
Quote:
The reason the VL diff went into the VN Group A, and also the SV5000, was not so much for tyre clearance, but for equal track widths. The VL front & rear suspension carried over to the VN, and the only difference was the addition of 52mm (26mm each side) to the width of the diff. The narrow front track of the VL remained, which gave the car it's nervous "twitchy" feel. This was undesireable to HSV. Faced with the problem of wanting to fit wider wheels, they had a few options.
The first was wider wheels all-round, but with the fronts having a 1 inch greater negative offset than the rears, to bring the front out 52mm wider - but this leaves a difficult problem for tyre/wheel rotation, and what spare do you carry?
The next option was to try to widen the front track by 2 inches, involving major re-engineering of the front end, but that was knocked on the head by the bean counters, and wouldn't happen until the VR.
The last option, was to narrow the diff by 2 inches, and what better way than to use an already proven & available part!! This then allowed HSV to fit 8 inch wheels with an entire extra inch of negative offset to all 4 corners. This had the effect of widening the front track, and reducing the "twitchiness" but also required the small flares to be fitted
