I think the news story has probably blown it up a bit, the truth is that they probably returned positive results from a blood test meaning that they have consumed drugs in the past few weeks, rather than actually being high at the time of racing.

Something like cocaine will only stay in the system for at most 3-4 days. THC can stay in the system for up to a few weeks. Obviously habitual user's will have it showing up for longer. There are so many variables when it come's to drug use from sex, age through to intake and how long you have been taking it. As someone has said some people won't be able to function without them. 10 per cent of all driver's tested is alot but drug use and / or abuse is a major problem in society today regardless of if it is a few drag racers, a few lawyers or a few truckies. Unfortunately this is going to be used as bad press for the sport we all love. At least our sport is not cycling!

Ok this is what happens, unfortunatley uninformed "journalists" just trying to get a headline sensationalise what is going on. Since the beginning of the year ANDRA have been random drug and breath testing at championship meets, its a urine test and a breath test, you turn up positive you get DQ'ed for the meeting. Anyone who sign on for the meeting can be tested, Racer, Crew, Official, Media, Staff and Commentators if you have a arm band you have a chance of being tested. Photographers, the starter, the lady on the timing computer have all had to tests so these are just not racers tested as the article states, usually 60-80 tests are done. The "insider" no doubt is a fabrication, and the positive test results which there have been at every meeting dont necessarily reflect someone is off their chops as stated when they are racing, just that its in their system. Its something that is going to get more prolific, I believe ANDRA wanted to do the Compak Attak this year but it didnt happen, the policy and penalties are on the ANDRA website. As for the article its a sensationalised beat up, of a positive step by ANDRA to look after the sport just like any other sport, it is true about 10% of tests taken have been positive, they havent all been racers or drugs.

6boost, re the truck driver's comment under current fatigue laws, drivers are unable tro drive longer than 12 hgoursd in any one 24 hour period. they are also required to take extended breaks 4 times a fortnight with two of those 24 hour breaks being taken consecutively. theres a whole lot more involved but thats the basics. point being that taxi drivers and many others who work multiple jobs or who work and study are doing just as many if not more hours work and travel. re drugs, the company is now liable for it's emoployees and hence if there is any indication of drug use by any driver for the protection of the company the driver is fired immediately. undoubtedly there are some who will continue to do wrong but there are just as many going out odf their way to do right in the face of ridiculously complicated laws in an industry with the highest illiteracy rates in australia. conclusion - truckies aren't all that the media hype them up to be.
