xr6t ftw.
Well i stand corrected... Unless someone else can prove G wrong?
He-He,
Have driven both types of cars and I can understand why its a hard choice (not sure what i would go for) i prefer the way the commo's drive in general, but boost is so hard to ignore (especially if you have no VL)
you should go to a few car yards and test drive similar cars, you may just "hate" the way one type drives ?
So no to a excel (ha-ha) ...lets talk about the old school muscle (now you did mention that before) what sort of thing could you get/like for your budget ?

Out of these cars, IMHO it comes down to the gearbox choice. The 4 speeds autos of either are complete puss though the holden is marginally better with a tune up. The 5sp el manuel in the ford is utter complete puss.
The 6 speed ZF in the ford is bliss. After driving the hire car around for a few weeks i realised I could own the new ford with one in a split second even with its horrible interior.
The 6 speed tremec in the ford is slightly better due to revised ratio and shifting mechanism, though the holden earlier version isn't really that bad. It more came down to sooky car reviewers. My personal T5/6 has a ripshift and I changed the fluid from auto tranny fluid(factory stuff) to mainlube solid ep boundary oil and it really lifted the gearbag a notch or two. I reckon it would do the same for the ford box.
Engine wise dollar for dollar for performance gain they are pretty close.
I would choose a VX Clubby 6M with upgraded brakes and leather. Give it a tune a set of decent pipes and a OTRCAI and it should net 240rwkw, with pretty good consumption figures. If the dollars stretched 3.91's in the rear make them awesome to kick around town with. In the end its just an opinion.
my old man has an xr6T .. and as many have said.. you wont look back.
Absolutely the best bang for buck.
Get it lowered and a pair of whiteline sway bars, and they handle like an absolute dream.
The only cars that have come close through the hills was a track built s14, and an R32 GTR.
Reliable power, and lots of it, for cheap.. and an absolute LOAD of fun.
OK we are talking about ford sh** on a holden web site which makes me feel sick. I own a stock 2005 HSV R8 manual which I love, the leather interior and the 6 litre V8 is unreal. Having 297rw/kw is fun and also the sound of the awesome V8 engine is unreal. Also having a car which is hand built like most European sport cars makes HSV a weapon. The car is sturdy and tough. There are upgrades for this car like a twin turbo, super charger and stroker kits. Because the engine is built tough with the turbo and super charger you don't need to have strengthened rods and pistons because they are already strong enough.
I watch the show top gear were they had the drag race with the XR6 turbo and the VZ HSV R8. The 100ft & 200ft times are equal except at the end of the quarter mile the XR6 turbo won by a 1/4 of a car length. Anyway we are talking about a natural aspirated engine against a turbo charged engine.
Being the owner of a VZ HSV R8 suspension is unreal and stiff, handles the corners like sh** on carpet. In other words handles like a supercar.
Also the seats are so comfy(heated as well).
Having a V8 the power is right there and very responsive and a 6 speed transmission makes cruising a treat running at 1600rpm at 100km/h. Also very economical except when you plant it.
HSV since 1988 to 2009
FPV since 2002 to 2009
Here's a site on upgrades & a few pictures.

Trust me after owning a HSV you won't look back!!!!
Problems
The Ford XR6T is fundamentally a very strong and durable car. However, there are a number of issues that any potential buyer should be aware of...
The biggest complaint we’ve heard applies to XR6 Turbos with the standard brake package (rather than the optional Premium Brakes). Lee from Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) tells us the company’s development vehicle has quickly chewed through three sets of front discs and pads - apparently the standard brakes are good for only one or two high speed braking manoeuvres before they overheat and start to warp. Then, once the disc begins to warp, it gets more and more out of shape and the brake pedal starts to shudder. Fortunately, there are some aftermarket solutions to this situation – we’ll look at upgrade brakes in the final part of the series.
Another complaint is driveline shunt. In some cars, you’ll hear and feel a clunk from the rear of the driveline when gently reapplying throttle. This seems particularly noticeable in cars with a manual gearbox. There are all sorts of suggestions on how to fix this problem – everything from simply loosening and re-torquing the rear sub-frame mounts to a complete differential and half-shaft replacement. If you’re looking at a car with exaggerated clunks from the rear, we strongly suggest putting the car up on a hoist for close inspection.
Be aware that, in some instances, the driveline shunt can be confused with a clunk from the rear suspension – this can be caused by broken diff mounts (common if the car has been thrashed) or split suspension bushes. Diff whines are also widely reported but in many instances they can be hushed with a fluid change. Differential failures are rare.
In early XR6Ts, many people (including us!) commented that the engine is very easily to stall during manoeuvring. Where this has been raised as a problem, the engine management will have been re-flashed with a new program which is said to improve rpm stability. A re-flash may also have be applied to early examples which suffered from a rough idle – however, this can sometimes be remedied by cleaning the throttle body.
Other small problems to watch out for include a noisy power steering pump, a creaking or clicking steering rack, ineffectual or dragging handbrake and a crunch when engaging top gear in the T5 manual gearbox. There has been a lot of talk on the valve springs employed in the XR6 Turbo and, while there have certainly been related problems at increased outputs, you’re almost guaranteed hassle-free operation if you leave the engine standard.
Interestingly, Ford has issued two safety recalls for BAs – the first regarding a circlip that holds the inner CV joint to the half shaft and the second for fitment of earthing wires to eliminate the possibility of static electricity deploying the side airbags (where fitted).
If you’re in the market for a FPV Typhoon or Tornado, you should be aware that the first batch of vehicles was prone to breaking the clips that hold the intermediate section of the twin-plate clutch in position. A recall was issued and production was temporarily halted until the clutch was reengineered and passed testing. We believe that all FPVs affected have been fixed and the revised clutch is fitted to all subsequent Typhoons/Tornados.
This would never happen to a HSV!!!!!

why not just get another project car. theres no better feeling than driving a car that uv helped build, and goes like stink.... well so iv been told...(mines still in pieces) and then keep the ss as a daily. i would rather have a fun fast car un realibly car than boring sack of **** ford lol
Your right on the ball zaksvl. I'm in the same boat. I have the R8 as a daily and the vl calais turbo as a project.
I just wish I had the money to buy the limited edition HSV W427. A 7 liter V8 worth $155,000

In terms of fords warping brakes:
Regardless of car.. ford or holden.. If i had plans to modify the engine and get some decent power out of it, or if I was using it to go hard through the hills, or on a track, I would NOT leave the standard brakes in it.
That's just asking for trouble..
i am a massive hsv fan owning vr and vs hsv's and am now on a very clean vr senator.im getting sick of 5.0s they go good but im so over them.i was looking at the vx r8's and vy ss's but i think if i wait till december i may pick up a vy hsv.im only going to be using it as a daily car maybe only drive it 2-4 times a week. i will be having a modified car for weekend fun any ways.what are the vy hsv prices ranging these days.i think vx and vt hsv's are a bit over priced.idealy vx r8 is what i want but maybe best of to go the next model or 2 up?
i was looking at the xr6's as i thought they would be good bang for bucks as im not looking to modify now just get in start and drive.

Lol @ W427
Rather an FG F6 then that, and it's half the price.
