Quite possibly. That engine was ruined by the fact it was converted to run on unleaded petrol and had to meet new emission standards. It only produced 122kW in the VL (that's 2.3 litre four cylinder power these days!), down from the 176kW it produced in the VK SS! The VL turbo produced 150kW, so it's no wonder the V8 wasn't a huge success.

Its a pity the VLs didn't get an efi v8. what is a stock VK V8 vs. a stock VL V8 like??

Yeah, that injected motor aint bad, especially when it's blown! According to my bible the VK was available with four V8 options; 4.9 litre 126kW 5.0 litre 117kW 5.0 litre 145kW (option 34 whatever that is) 5.0 litre 176kW (VK SS and VK BT1)

Dunno whether there were ever any VK BT1s on the Kiwi cop fleet, but there certainly were in Oz. They get all the good cop cars! They even had GTO coupes in some states. Just goes to show how far engine tech has come in the last few years - there are plenty of blown four cylinders putting out 180kW now. E series Clubbies have 317kW, and I think the V8 supercars have around 500kW. Damn them for not having to make homologation specials any more!

We didnt get many VK's, if any. The police have a habit of switching manufacturers from time to time. They had plenty of HQ's, then HX's & 'Z's, VH Commodores were popular, then they had a lot of XF Falcons in the fleet, as well as a few Mitsubishi V3000's, EA's replaced the XF's.
