30-05-08, 18:57 GMT+10#21 well he did say he wants quality at a decent level.....
i started off with 6 1/2s in the parcel trayand 4"s in the dash and a $50 amp on a sub i got on special from supercheap for 15 bucks, like *** it was ok but you woud turn it up and your ears would hurt from the screeching, now no matter how loud it is, there is zilch distortion and its all clarity and quality....
and i reckon, with sound deadened front doors and door pods with 6 or 6 1/2inch woofers with crossovers and tweeters and 6x9s or even 6 1/2s in a fibreglass parcel tray thats sealed from the boot n sh!t will produce enough bass. he wont need to spend the extra 4oo odd dollars on another amp and sub and sub box etc....

I've always been told 6X9s produce "Mid-Range Bass". Something a Sub can't. ?

30-05-08, 20:35 GMT+10#23 i couldn't be ****ed reading all the bull**** in the middle but i read the first few posts, i just bought a whole sound system for one of my vl's, it's a JVC headunit, JVC 4" speakers in factory spots and JVC 6x9's in the parcel tray, most people just assume it has a sub from the bass it makes and i got the whole lot at once on sale for $300, a few hours to install it myself and never touched it since, if sound isn't ur priority buy sale stock and last years models for cheap

well i guess we all have a different idea of what a "decent" sound level is. the guy said he doesnt want it too loud, so theres no need to go on about how you gotta buy this and that so that it still sounds good when it turned up really loud.

yeah thats what i meant...and IMO theres no point having 6x9s if you have a sub...same reason i think you should run a high pass filter if you have a sub also.

02-06-08, 16:30 GMT+10#26 all the speakers should be on the high pass filter when there are subs involved, the result is a better, clearer sounding speaker as it only has to play the high notes, no need to mix bass into it and fk itall up...
Subs handle the downlows, 2 way components as in 6" woofer and tweeter with crossover, control the highs in the tweeter and the mids tothe woofer with some low..

02-06-08, 17:59 GMT+10#27 exactly. and for that same reason, 6x9s are pointless if you are running a sub, especially if a high pass filter is involved. its not as if you're gonna sit there with it cranked up sub(s) pumping, saying to yourself "hmm, high to low range sound great...but wheres the damn mid-range bass?"

18-06-08, 01:03 GMT+10#36 hey,
thanks for the suggestions guys
especially adz3174
Im looking for a similar thing
To GRK-WPN a decent volume is around 90db. Most rock concerts are mixed to 115db and you can go deaf at 110db. so 120db and especially 130db is way to much for someone who wants a 'cheap system with a decent quality at a decent level'
or whatever it was
Ive got my eye on a JVC head unit from strathfield for $200 and 2 4" Xplod speakers at $50 each for the dash. also looking at a pair 6"9"s at $100 for the back.
I figure based on the consensus of this forum that a sub isnt needed to produce decent sound when a pair of 6'9's can be used to produce decent bass response at a decent level, if i find it clips to much ill go out and get myself a Pioneer TS-SW1041D 10" sub (Frequency down to 20hz) at around $200 (250Wrms)
Im a little curious about amps and $#!t though, ive dealt with HiFi Audio, PA audio and Guitar Amps but im totally new to car audio.
I have a few questions:
- Will i need a 4channel amp of a higher RMS wattage (like PA audio) to run 2 4"s and 2 6"9"s?
- Whats the lowest frequency response i can get out of a pair of 6"9"s
- If i choose to get the sub (aint got the money atm) ill have to get another amp wont I?
- Alternatively i could run the sub of an amp and the speakers off the headunit. is this recomended?
- Will i have to make any changes in battery or alternator stuff?
- I have to buy a new battery. how can i make sure im getting a good one?
looking to spend as little as possible have $400 of vouchers.
Thanks

18-06-08, 10:46 GMT+10#37 you get deaf at about 140...
dont worry about the strainer, he is a no hoper
get the amp just a little higher thatn the 6x9's and you will be fine on that front, lowest frequency you will have to check the manafactures specifications, i cant see them going to 50hz
if you get a sub, remove the 6x9's and replace with some 6" or 8" midbass in the rear, and have a 10-12" sub, running off a different amp
you can run the speakers off the HU but its not recomended better off an amp
its only a baby system, you wont need to touch the battery or alt

18-06-08, 18:05 GMT+10#38 I beg to differ.
Any sound over 85db is considered a dangerous sound. After listening at this volume for a whole day you can cause permanent damage
91db is safe to listen to for two hours a day and at 100db you can cause irreversable hearing damage for listening to it for only 15 minutes a day.
The loudest sound tolerated by humans is 120db and at 130db (volume of gunshot) you can cause immediate permanent damage.
(This is the volume recorded in your ears not that the speaker produces though)
I am studying as a sound engineer and audiologist

Thanks for the reply
Ive got a wagon and the spot to put the speakers in the back are 6x9" so i wasnt sure if i could put 6"s in there. Also if i get a sub and i take out the 6x9" is that wasted money in the 6x9"s or can i sell them for a decent price?
It may be only 3 months or something so if i choose to get a woofer, id rather get 6"s straight up instead of having to sell the 6x9"s..
ok if 6x9"s dont go below 50hz i think i should get a sub. I was looking at that one coz its only 7.5cm in depth and will fit in the tailgate of the wagon without minimising boot space
- so can i run the 2 4"s off the HU and then get an amp for the woofer and rear speakers?
- also what makes a good battery? how can i tell a good one from a bad one? where should i get it? im probably getting one tomorrow... so yeah. quick reply please
Ps. Sorry to shut you down =P

18-06-08, 20:09 GMT+10#40 haha i dont think that will work lol
147.7 lol.. yep just a bit
ive tried to stay away from excessive noise coz yeh, i wanna go into that industry so yeh, lol but i still play really loud guitar and **** haha i think all of our ears are ****ed!! most ppl listen to an ipod at about 105db.
So yeh, i dont really need a HUGE system.
another question
- would it be cheaper to buy a 5 channel instead of a 4 and a monoblock?
Thanks
