yeah mine was/ is a ball bearing unit, i bought it off some guy who apparently upgraded his setup on his xr6 and it had done "40 thousand k's and was in as new condition, which it appeared when i bought it.
Ive heard the same things about them being sensitive to shock so who knows its previous history, im not angry/ hold grudges with the seller etc.
Id like to learn more about controlling the oil quality to the turbo for when i buy another one, which i have no doubts will be another gt35/40.
I have one of those braided kits from a supplier from CT and have seen numerous setups running the same setup.

you can get inline oil filters to go between block and turbo, i think its HKS that makes them..
Havnt too much pressure is odd? dont they have a restrictor in them to make sure its getting the right amount?
im not sure but i heard that people who put them on vls sometimes put their own restrictor on them to limit the amount of oil, could be wrong though.
An inline filter would be good, would keep the oil clean and limit the flow at the same time, just gotta make sure you change it often.
Sorry guys, but I have to back garrett here and say 99% of the time, its the customers(or applications) fault. Its a production item, they sell 100's of thousands a year, and prob have a failure rate of maybe 1%, I'd be guessing a number, but honestly, having seen many faliures, most are due to **** from the engine, be it carbon or other crap clogging the oil feed, bearings overheat, and plastic bearing cages melts and viola, bearing faliure. If it was up to me, or you all want my advise, get yourself an inline filter, they are available from Performance Wholesale in QLD or any other HKS supplier, they are just a HKS inline turbo feed filter, and have female threads so you can use either -3 or -4 speedflow fittings to suit most oil feeds. They cost about $110-120, and are washable/reusable.
The fords have a problem with turbo faliure, they have long service intervals, and carbon up a lot, and there has been much problems with turbo faliure, I'd say your turbo was damaged before you used it.

hey john i feel bad now cause you sold me your old t4 setup and it hasnt missed a beat. it was hooling heaps loud from the moment you put it in but. i rember think far out it kinda sounds like a leak but from the turbo i think it was ****ed well before you bought it

Haha i was checking these turbos out at Kevs. You can see that the build quality is not as good as Garretts, but they seem to be pumping out some good numbers with them.
The rear housings are huge on them, the rotors love them!
I was in a similar boat having brought a car with these ford turbos on and the bearings must of lasted 3 weeks & worn out. I think alot of it comes down to the wrong oil making the thing over heat. Instead of buying a new IW turbo I brought an external turned it to high mount and now instead of driving it straight away im bloody pissing around with braided hoses dump pipes, intercooler piping. It was a silly move! I doubt anyone would go back to a t3 after driving a 35/40.
