yeah without the rod, the boost would just push the gate open.
have you taken the hose from actuator to front of turbo off? this should allow maximum boost, reconnect the rod too. but be aware, boost will not be limited to any set psi, watch the boost so it dont blow your turbo.
i ran na ecu for awhile and was exactly the same as the turbo ecu, until the knocking started, then car would idle for awhile then die, but using the na ecu even now it ran fine. got me 'shrugs'
get a guage and check fuel pressure, if you cant get a guage pull off the return fuel line and do a flow test, but a guage is best, (refer to vl manual its all in there)
if thats good your injectors might be either na ones or blocked, rip them out and get them tested, and new injector filters and seals fitted. na injectors will flow around 185cc@3bar and turbo ones around 270cc@3bar.
is the timing set to the furtherest mark to the right or left on the crank pully?
ive seen it before that a guy thought he was on 5 degrees when really he was on about 30, mad detonation
just a few things to try, hope ya fix it soon dude good luck
ive had a guage to check the fuel pressure and its good
1 injector is leaking , they are brown tops i had them cleaned and flow tested before i put them in they were all the same and they didnt leak got me stuffed y 1 is leaking now?
if you wanna check the flow of the fuel pump do it after the fuel filter, just disconnect the line and direct it into a 2 liter container. after 30sec it should get 3/4 full.
I had the same prob with the spark plugs when i did the conversion. I put in a new set and adjusted the AFM resistance down to like 180 OHMs to richen it up and been runnin sweet ever since. Cause the way you describe the plugs it def a fuel or timing issue.

Well the exhaust would push it open not the boost but i know what you meant
Also your car may have seemed fine but the A/F ratios would have been off with the NA ecu and your car would have been down on power a fair bit.
Also if he takes off the actuator hose then he'l have to block of the port on the compressor housing but i dont recomment anyone taking of their actuator hose because the turbo will boost and self destruct probably before hes even got a chance to take his foot of the pedal.
It all depends on where your measuring boost from, if your boost gauge is spliced into the actuator hose then that will give you a couple extra psi just like when you put in a boost controller
I cant work out your problem, maybe your timings so ****ed that raw fuel is going into the turbo and burning in there causing heaps of boost to be made even with the rod off?
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
mate i ran an n/a ecu with turbo setup for years, with no drama's 14psi 230kw, u just need to lower ur base timing and make up the fuel diff by lower fuel pressure( adjustabl reg) with the turbo injectors, car ran 12.9 and is still runin fine and af/r's were sweet. if he had raw fuel goin itno the turbo he's plugs wouldnt b white. if u say ur timings right mate i'd b checking fuel pressure at ur rail and if thats all good would b getin injectors tested and checking ur sprat pattern and flow. simple as that.
if your taking the actuator rod off and it is still making boost then check that the gate isn't ceizzed up if its loose then wtf it must be blocked some how.

what was the fuel pressure?
where is the fuel leaking from on the injector?

i had the turbo rebuit before i put it on and you would think that the guy would have told me if the gate was seized?

the fuell is leaking from the top of the injector or so it looks like.
when we tested them didnt think to check the pressure but we did race them in the machine and they all were even.
does anyone know the part number for genuine vlt brown tops?
mine are 1z42 7305 this is found on the top of the injector btw.
