I would love to see the RB30 run 8.5:1 (from 9:1) comp, 6 degrees static advance (from 15 degrees), the super restrictive emissions set ups (there was 3 in total) in a car that has a 1900RPM stall )down from 2200RPM) and 3.08 diff gears (down from 3.45). My guess the car would run 18's down the 1/4mile.
How do i compliment your knowledge without sounding like a d!ck head?
That has seriously helped me understand the difference between the two cars.. They cant really be compared.
Mate of mine just bought a VL 5lt Calais, 308, extractors etc, what a nugget.
However they can be made to go well if you want to spend the dollars. Stock heads flow is shocking, best way to attack is to start with VN heads and increased compression, larger cam, different diff gears, better exhaust etc etc or do what a lot of people I have seen do is bolt and injected 5l and t700 and lower diff gears in so that it goes ok and you still might be able to afford to drive it.
Still remember following him is his old VK Calais Director 5L in my dead stock 245 hemi 3spd manual Valiant Charger ($450 dollar car), was always about 2 inches off his rear bumper and they were rated at 17?kw from the factory, it got sold shortly after that........
vl 5litres where the least powerfull holden v8 bought out in all the vb-vl series of commodore v8,s and im only refrencing to the stock 5 litres not the ss or brocks
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
the non EFI heads didnt flow too bad they were rated at something like 330hp, ofcourse no match for the EFI 460HP figures, but still good enough for the usual mods other than stroking or forced induction.

As stated above, the main reason they were down on power was the change to unleaded and the emissions restrictions they had to meet. If super was still the fuel of the day they more than likely would have had more power than the VK. If you have never owned or driven one enough to make judgement, don't. I like my 5L Calais, it might lack a bit of power, but it's totally unmodified bar the air cleaner, so there's work to do. Plus I'm not looking for a drag monster, just something to cruise in on the weekends, that's got a nice note to it.

vlcalais8 has the answers to that one, can't find where they were posted in another thread to quote. There is a valve on the right exhaust manifold, can't recall when it's operational, but apparently it closes off that side of the exhaust, causing all exhaust gas to be forced out the left side, plus the setup with the charcoal canister etc. I believe the exhaust is the biggest problem, put on some headers and a nice cat back system (size depends on mods) and it's meant to make quite a difference.
there was actually 5 emission setups used in total, first is positive crankcase ventilation (PCV, used on all cars too), evaporative emission control (EEC, used on all cars too via the carbon canister), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR which pumps some exhaust gases back into the intake), early fuel evaporation (EFE, this is from the heat valve actuator in the driver header thats about 1 inche in diameter), and also inlet air preheat (IAP, used on other cars too, this is for hot air during start up). You ask any performance minded person that has dealt with the VL 5.0ltr, all will say first thing to do when chasing power is get rid of all the emission set ups, except however the PCV valve as the carb uses this as a vac source to idle properly. Thats the only thing running on mine and it has no running issues. These systems also rob vac from the motor that would be better used by the carb for responsiveness and smoother running. Then you think, after 20 years are the valves in all these systems opening up/closing properly? chances are they're not which will cause even more power loss/running issues.
if u bought one today it would to be to mod it.. they have no place today as standard.. it's an underpowered carby 308 when petrol is costing $1.50 a litre.. a vn v6 will wreck it in a race and drivability and use 7 litres less every 100ks..
put on injected top end, or even a gas conversion with some good mods and she'll definitely come alive though.. besides a few minor things, theres no gigantic differences between a late 70s 308 block and the final V8 block used in the VT commos in 1998, its all the top end that significantly changed.
