why? Why not just stick with kws because that's what we've done before? I think ditching anything (like mph in this example) is stupid if there is nothing wrong with it.

And when HP was ditched in favour of KW everyone made this same kind of arguement but now the change has been made theres not many people that use HP or would go back to using it. Chances are things would be similar given a change from MPH to KPH in Australian drag racing.

i don't think kw is that widely used, i would still say that apart from the japanese turbo scene- hp is most popular

Yeah I dunno nothing wrong with measuring it in MPH, considering thats the worldwide standard for drag racing measuring it in anything else would be pretty pointless. But saying that, we do live in australia not america and MPH outside of drag racing is pretty much obsolete and to most people means hardly anything. Tell someone not big into the scene a top fueler just went 320mph and they'll have no real idea how fast that is just that its obviously quick. tell them it ran 515km/h from a standing start over 400m getting to that speed in 4 seconds and instantly they have a much more real understanding of just how insane that is as it suddenly has a relationship with the speedos you look at everyday... Not that I think it should ever change, but I wouldnt be complaining if I saw an extra converted mph -> kmh figure showing up below or next to the MPH on any track/timeslip!

Jack summed it up perfectly, it's a "quarter mile". Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
