Actually this happened to me in the Galant aswell.
The cable actually got stuck somehow, and was reving like a bitch, I chucked it into Neutral, pulled up to the lights, and didnt even think about wtf was happening, Turned the car off, and it was fine. Took off, and there it went again haha. Lucky I was about 10 seconds from my house
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Well almost, I had a ford escort many years ago with a high performance
ignition amplifier and high end coil and on cold humid days the leads
would give off that light bluish glow - this was the time before blue
leds I might add

Happened to me too.
With a fair bit of power, and no vacuum for the brake booster, you have zero chance of stopping it with the brakes. Turning off the ignition is o/k, but as you will be in a pants wetting panic, turn it too far, and you lock the steering on most cars !!!
Trust me, this is far more frightening than losing your brakes on a hill.
