EAT - Ahh, you know Johnny - seen his work ute? Single cab hilux with an alloy tray. Has a SR20, insane... Two cars i was involved with, cam only not touching the heads except for better valve springs went 284 and 286rwkw respectively. Thats masssive mumbo in a VL for **** all if you can do alot of it yourself. Yeah, that does sound like the way to go.. I was aiming for 260-300rwkw and from what I've heard, its quite hard to get those numbers out of the 5.0L without a charger or turbos.. you agree? 286 in a VL would be excellent.. and yeah if you can it yourself, or in my position, know people that can if will bring the costs down.. Thanks for all the comments and info guys, appreciate it.. Would it really matter LS1 I chose to work on if I wanted to play with the heads and a decent cam? 'Cause really, there's only 25kw between VT & VY.

I'll add you later today. What LS1 did you decide on? NZ & SLE - So have I got it this right? VT SS SII - 220 (LS1) VT SI CLUB - 195 (5.0) VT GTS - 220 (LS1) VT Senator - 195 (5.0) / 220 (LS1) Or did the GTS also have the 5.0 or 5.7 option, and when you say 5.7 you do mean an LS1, not a 355 holden yeah? Also, how much power did the VT SS Series 1 put out?

sometime's the most expensive option is better in the long run aussie vt v8 engines are killer-but try find parts for it now? and if u do how much is it? ls1 is costly-but have a look whats on the market for it-with more years to come as we have 5.7+ ls2 6.0 ltr+ 6.2 coming out- 7 litre engines from gm motorsport etc etc+most gm parts are interchangeable like heads+manifoilds from factory parts are everywhere on the market for ls1+ls2 etc etc not taking anything away from aussie v8 engines at all from a performance point of view for example-if u want 400 rwkw out of a aussie v8 how much do u have to spend or also how much do u have to spend to get the same out of a ls1 or ls2 from my personal point of view ls1 and ls2 is worth the trouble in the long run if u chasing killer power+tunning options on ls1+ls2 is endless and very very streetable if u just want to cruise a vt v8 engine is more than enough from what i see ls1 with some mods without touching bottom end can get up to 300 rkw with ease if the right parts and combo are bought ls2 are at 330 rwkw without bottom end work+torque-- with more to come has people are just starting to play with ls2 hate to see what the new 6.2 and 7 litre engines will get if mucked around with+but very very costly at the moment or in time to come- ls1 onwards is the way to go in my point of view and very very streetable-even if sticking it massive camshaft's etc etc mods on ls1 is cheaper then aussie v8 in my eye's-n/a combo's+turbo's+twin turbo kits now+side blowers+normal blowers in the middle+intercooler option if u get stuck pm me your questions aussie v8 needs more $$$ to make it go hard ls1 technology+tunning is endless = more power if that's what your chasing some prices to go by- ls1+6 speed complete with loom, computer and pumps etc etc $5,000-7500.00 or takeaway about $1000-$1500 with a auto ls2 are in now looking from $10,000+15,000 depending on auto or manual( 4 inch bore) more cubes makes more power or torque

vt series 1 gts 220kw was a holden 350 stroker not a 355 as most people think they are, they didnt have the .030 overbore from factory so only 350ci vt series II gts had 300kw , the calloway motor and all vt series II hsv's had 250kw except the gts if u want big power spend the money on putting an ls1 in now, u wont regret it, they make power so much easier, u have to spend big $$$ on the holden v8 to get good power out of them.

CWRECK - Yeah, i understand exactly what you mean, currently building at vt, great engine, but just incredibly expensive to make big power. yeah, I'm leaning towards the LS1 the more I read, and the more feedback I'm getting. I don't mind spending a bit more if it's going to be easier to get power, more effiecent, better ecomemy, and interchangable parts. Thanks for all info mate, if I have any questions I'll let you know.. Just wondering, is 290-330rwkw too much for a vl weekend car? And with this much power is it a 10.5-11.5 second car? Also if I dip into the 10's, do I near half a cage to be street leagal? VR Calais - Ah, cheers mate.. VT power figure vary so much 'cause of the engine change. Do you know what power a VT SS Series 1 came out with? Yeah, like I said to cwreck and a few others, this VT is getting into mega bucks, and I think it'll be lucky to get 300rwkw in the HX.. so the LS1 is looking very promising. Cheers, Todd

dont discount the aussie v8 though.. look at it this way.. stock for stock a holden 5.7L is 220kw and a stock gen3 was 225kw.. bear in mind the ls1 has a lot higher compression, a better flowing inlet manifold, 8 ignition coils, and alloy heads.. and is around 50kg lighter or so, all that to make only 5kw more.. but thats just it, the ls1 comes with those things stock, to put them on your holden costs lots of money and time.

A motor is only as powerful as the money and experience you throw at it. A tuff as N/A 5/L may make those numbers but it would be so cranky and the heads and manifold to do it would be qite scary in price. Charger or turbo would be alot easier. As far as picking an LS1, if your changing the cam it wont matter. If you want to stay bolt on mods for a while the VY series LS1 did have a slightly bigger cam(read f u c k all). It more lift and a little more duration. It will run with the right pipes and intake mods over 250rwkw with a mafless tune. If you hunted around and found a L98 the current incarnation of the gen4 in the VE SS bolt on you will be looking 270rwkw. Factory cam factory idle and less than 8L per hundred K's in a VL. That i could live with as a daily driver. The heads it runs on the 4in bore are basically the same design as the LS7 D-port race engine and flow over 330cfm stock as a rock which is as much as a aftermarket CNC ported LS1 Head. The options are limitless...... If it was my car i would whack in a cam of around 222/224 580/580 at 112LSA and clean up the stock heads with a set of comp 918's valve springs. Bang on high 270's low 280 at the wheels. Nice idle and would whip just about any car on the street. Get a cam with a wider LSA put some GT2871's 6psi in it and looking 350rwkw @ 12psi over 400rwkw. That would see into the 9's.

Yeah true, but it's just the price of the holden 350 5.7L. Being a VT GTS motor, the only way I would buy that motor is if I bought the wreck, then can take exactly what I want and sell what I don't. But same goes for a VY LS1, I'd buy a wreck. I agree mate, even though the LS1 would be more expensive to buy, I don't need to spend as much money on it to get decent power. The LS1 definately has its advantages.. Quote: Originally Posted by Duke57TT As far as picking an LS1, if your changing the cam it wont matter. That would see into the 9's. Ah alright, so it wouldn't matter, I could just get a VT Berlina LS1 for example, wouldn't even need an SS SII. So really, all they changed in the LS1series was the cam? So LS2, 270rwkw with the right exaust and the usual intake mods? Yeah, 8L p/100, not bad at all mate.. So it's almost worth buying an LS2 and then doing less mods, yeah? Ofcourse weighing it all up, but there's less head work to do... So with 270-280 at the wheels, around about that times am I looking at? F u c k, that getting up there ay.. In the 9s for streeter.. How much does yours make? You think anything over 330 is getting too much for street? Thanks again for all your help and info mate..

330 rwkw is plenty------i try and drive my ute with 395 rwkw which is a hand full+it weighs in at 1600 kg+++-let alone a vl with 330 rwkw that weighs less- 330 rwkw or in old money 442 bhp is a bit of power- depends on what u want an also ask yourself the power to weight ratio of a vl to a vt onwards as the late model cars weight a bit compared to vl's +torque wise ls2 are the next engine to see big power gains-give a year or two and u will see fiqures of 400 rwkw in n/a engines + when people work out whats going on with them also try buy like a vx series 2 engine- engine no should start with vf01 or later 01 means the year etc etc if a ls1 engine is what u are after comes with a better manifold+later improved heads-slighty better refine inner parts. decent ls1 will get easy 250-260 rwkw with the basic stuff exhaust, tune mafless, cam+springs. cam+springs are very very important

people throw power figures around here stupidly... power is useless if you cant put it down, and you dont want to put too much down for the street or you'll kill yourself or someone else. some ppl having 200-250rwkw with ceptors and stuff, i mean really... 250-300rwkw is a LOT and if your driveline and tyres can use it then its going to be a lot of fun more than you will need

I said is 330 to much for street.. I know its plenty. The bloke thats building my VT engine bought a VX Maloo, came home and changed the heads, cam and can't remember what else. Now makes 384rwkw... Not a bad effort, just thought it was funny, brand new engine, and pulls the heads off. Kerb weigh of the vl are: SL - 1250kg EXEC - 1280kg BERLINA - 1290kg CALAIS - 1350kg So power/weigh, I know its definately enough considering the n/a was 114 at the motor ha! Quadtriple++ it..

I just don't know what 250-300 in a vl feels like. I've experience close to that power, just not it a vl. Thats exactly what I mean, there's no use spending and spending if your driveline and tyres can't put it to use.

Yeah, I wasn't exactly straight forward in what I wanted. I just wanted to get a bit more knowledge about the LS1 and whether it was the better option, then we got into how much we could get out of them... True, my dad always taught me to get the widest tyre I can fit on the rim.. yeah, exactly mate, if you don't have the right set up, she just won't handle.. ------- I think its great that with TT we can get 400, But it doesn't mean thats what I want.. for me, and for street 400 way is too much.. But I'm not talking ****, I'll get the mods from him and post them up.. It's not forced, its been a while since we spoke about his engine.... Thats right! Its chipped... forgot that part Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
