Hot rod... rofl... no.
A rod is a TYPE of car, not a category that any car can fall into.
Who seriously thinks 'OH HOT ROD' when a HJ kingswood goes past?

Ok, here is the meaning of "hot rod".......
Quote:
hot rod also hot-rod (htrd)
n. Slang
An automobile that has been rebuilt or modified to increase its speed and acceleration
And personally, no matter what car it is, to make it a true hot rod it must have something like this between the chassis rails.........

You'd call a late model VX / VY with that engine bay a rod? Dreaming sunshine.
Well going by the definition of what is a hot rod, any car that is modifed to increase it's speed is one.
Hot rod was first given to cars being modifed in the U.S, i believe after the 2nd world war. So this included cars from the 1930s and 1940s, as they were so cheap. And so since then, everyone regards a hot rod as a typical 1930-40s car, yet going by the true definition, it can be any car that is modifed.
I remember Boyd Coddington talking about how hot rods came about in one of the American Hot Rod episodes.
I think the definition needs redefining as it is incorrect. Should be 'any modified 30's - 60's car' EDIT: Even then there are cars that wouldnt fit into it, such as customs, classics, vintage, sleds, etc.
It's sacriledge calling some of these other cars rods, its like calling a VL turbo a 'muscle car'.. when clearly a muscle car is related to era, not particular model or makes.
But the actual term "hot rod" doesn't only define '30-40s vehicles. It's just a slang phrase for a modified car. All customs, vintage, muscle cars and late models can be classed as a hot rod, as long as it is modifed in every department.
As i said car builders like Boyd and Foose call all their cars hot rods, be it a 1920s ford pickup to a 2005 mustang.
The Hot rod era is not doomed, yes as time goes on it will be harder to find real 'hot rod' shells to perform builds upon, but that will only make the scene more exclusive. Modern cars can never be rods in my opinion, after the rod came the muscle, after the muscle came the high end turbo car, after this? Cars which need almost no modification to go quicker than most of all of the above IE LS2's etc

This is all i could find in writing with regards to what i was saying.
Quote:
Hot rods are cars which have been customized for performance, and/or appearance. A "Hot Rod" referred to the cam inside the engine. It was adopted as the name of a car that had been "hopped up" by modifying the cam to achieve higher performance.
And that's why the likes of Boyd etc call the cars they build as "Hot Rods", no matter what era it was made in.
I guess the reason why we distinguish a hot rod as a vehicle from the pre 1950s is because that's when the term "hot rod" was created. But the true meaning of this term can be used for any modifed vehicle.
edit: it's just popped up in my head as well that on an episode of 5th Gear (like Top Gear), they called some late model show car a hot rod as well.
And a couple featured cars from Hot Rod Magazine.........
With a name like Hot Rod Magazine, you would think it will only feature cars like your traditional 1934 Ford 3 window, but as you can see, all modified cars are considered a Hot rod.

people have different meaning to the word hotrod, whys it such a problem whats named one and what isnt?? meaning says anything thats been modified etc. so see it as you wish be it a 2007 model car if someone wants to call a hotrod of a 1940's car.

mmm whats that red thing, looks like a very sweet lotus
For the point though lets legally define a hotrod and as far as dept of transport are concerned a HOTROD is any car pre 1950. you cant put hot rod rego on a car post 1950. Im currently building a 51 twin spinner ute with a mate and we were bummed to find out we just didnt meet the category. Still, im my opinion a hot rod is chopped, channeled and shaved and should have an engine that sits there and lumps like nothing else. Generally in a model a, model t, coupe, willys or sled. By the way, Wintersun was awesome this year!!
Newer cars are not hod rods. toranas and munros are muscle cars. commodores dont really fit a category yet. They will never be muscle cars or hot rods. kids in 20 years time will have new gto's and ls2 monaros to play with so that will b there thing.
Remember this is providing we're still allowed v8s on the road in 20 years and not have battery powered smart cars. By the way fuel prices are going and pollution I wouldnt be surprised if we really are the last of the guys to seriously get to play with v8's, and its getting hard now. I wonder what it would take to make a batter powered 426??

Forget about the department of transport say, as it is, the RTA don't have a clue of what the capacity of a 13B is.......79ci is not 2.6L. Anyway, different countries have different laws in regards to what can be registered and what can't.
Is it just me or is everyone just going by what their defination of a hot rod is, instead of the true definition of what the phrase means??
Here i'll post it up again........

Put it this way.
If say for example people started to modify cars now, instead of 60yrs ago and the word "hot rod" was created, then all cars ie commodres, falcons, wrx etc would be considored a hot rod. But that doesn't mean in 60yrs time that these are the only cars to be called hot rods.
I guess i will take Boyd's, Foose's and Trepanier's word on what is a hot rod. Hence why HOT ROD MAGAZINE features all modifed cars
So going back the the original question, if you go by the true meaning of what is a hot rod, then it will never die.....unless there are no cars to modify

The only thing myself and josh are trying to say is that the what most peoples definition of a rod is, is different to your 'real' definition, therefore the definition has changed.
If you ask people what they would class a hot rod as, 99% will not say 'its a modified late model car'.
