31-05-07, 18:22 GMT+10#22 quickVL - Reliability is a factor of probability and component loading...... there is no magic formula as anything can happen. Look at F1.. 15millon+ USD for an engine and **** still goes wrong?
The only weak spots will be the pistons/engine and the diff... both cheap to replace.
Ill give you some maths to do..... you spend 4500 on a bottom end + more on final assembly and bolt ons etc etc with the works - i can purchase over 45 engines@100 each that will blow in due course and if everything else survives, ill be back on the track in a day. In fact... Recycle/sell the block and alloy heads and you can get each engine down to $50each or even FREE.
Furthermore, i bet you that a well tuned N/A engine will last just as long as a good tuned forged motor.
The two major things that break engines in turbo applications. Detonation and Piston/Rod Failure.
Detonation - Conservative tune.... C16 or Pump with Toluene - keep the timing safe.
Piston/Rod Failure - Safe Rev Limit and obey it.
Forged bottom ends are not fool proof nor are they not susceptible to failure. Detonation will make a mess of a forged piston any day - it will just ping and cry out for mercy before it finally lets go.

31-05-07, 19:01 GMT+10#24 This thread is cool, good luck with the build. I hope it can be done for that much. Be great to see it done on the cheap. Post some pics of your progress build please.

31-05-07, 20:11 GMT+10#26 RB30 is probably the most strongest 6 that was in the 80s.... she will last dont worry!
Im aiming for a glide... so might have 4100 left to spend on the rest of the setup! Ill get the trans last as its the most expensive item!

31-05-07, 20:42 GMT+10#27 Should be close to doable me thinks as long as you can do most of it yourself. Its a relatively simple combination these days. The hidden killer could be the cost of the tuning!
Invest in a good camshaft aswell! Id think you may struggle using a stock N/A cam!

I think if you go all out and buy s/h items such as ecu injectors, pump, and you do all the work your self then if all goes well you might be able to scap in a 10sec pass on c 16 for being safe.
But how long do you think she will last on the street? i mean pump fuel boost pressure??
I dont think you will get any where with the 25 spline cig diff,i mean once you got boost into it, set of slick;s behind the cig and taking off at the drags i think the good old cig will fall out in a big break making you turn the indicator;s on and turning the way the cig wants you to lol.
But then again if you got the cash and dont mind spending it just to see if it will do the times you are after or if it will just go ( KBOOM) I personal think with my knowledge in the long run for some poor old joe, to lash out and try to achieve a buget 10sec pass will end up costing the joe blow doulble in the end.
But good luck champ it would be good to see you do it all the best.

Hahaha man....yeah YOU MIGHT get the motor for $100....then add new coolant, new oil, head gasket (even a cometic wont last forever if more than once after a meltdown), miscellaneous gaskets and it aint no $100 job thats for sure!
I applaud you for trying but lets not kid ourselves, keep it realistic so's others can follow suit...no-ones going to pull a motor in and out and change all the sh1t over 10 times let alone 45....

31-05-07, 23:16 GMT+10#35 the thing is aswell if his $100 ****ter of an engine does pack it in, at the end of the day he still has the expensive boltons and he can simply build a reliable forged bottom end and have a reliable combination!
good luck with it mate and please do keep us informed!

31-05-07, 23:31 GMT+10#36 yeah but none of it was bought from top shelf shops or installed by workshops, hell willy built the bottom end for me and he's just a friend!
It's fair enough some people want to go to a shop, drop a fat wad of cash and walk out with an uber fast and reliable vlt, and that's awesome it's a great way to do it, but sometimes they don't understand their is another element who would rather save themselves a bit of money, and learn about what's going on by messing around with it themselves or with friends, the car might not be as reliable but in the end it's just a car. Knowledge is king.

And just remerber 1 thing if this $100 does go bang hard there is a chance as well as turbo could easly get damage in some ways???
Like i said i know i could build one up with all the bit;s and piece's that i got lying around the shop' and maybe even less than $10.000 but then i got to look at $$$ in the cost of damage to other items and also time for my self to get it back up and running.
Good luck with it all and i hope you get what you want out of it, and may it last for ever.

01-06-07, 00:01 GMT+10#39 I'll be following this thread closely man. Nice idea!
Although, im with Wyndup with regard's to the proposed engine switcheroo stuff.
It would take the "realism" out of it changing the long engine like 20 time's. Maybe try to base the build around 1 N/A engine, but freshened up with some ring's/bearing's/gasket's etc?
