atmo bt1 dont agree with ya u get more torque and more power much easily out of an rb25 compared to a rb30 and im not gonna start with reliability

Look on SAU many a person running 300rwkw on a standed rb25 all day everday (no cas probs lol). For bolt ons the rb25 rips asss on the rb30.

Seeing as how I've probably worked on and supplied turbo kits for more engines of both pedigree than most, I'll offer my opinion. The RB30 fitted with a GT35 on a stock turbo engine with computer and injectors could expect maybe 300-340rwhp through a manual on pump fuel. They make full boost of 18psi at 3600-3700rpm in doing so. Most are well worn, and even reco, with nothing more than rings and bearings, still aren't a magical lump of steel to begin with. Don't get me wrong, there is no replacement for displacement, but we are talking botom of the food chain, bolt on type upgrades here. All you guys jump straight to the discussion about 25 headed 30's and 26 headed 30's, we are talking about taking a car that is stock NA, and starting from scatch with every component needed to turbo it. With computer, gearbox, internals, bolt on's, with a built 25/30 or 26/30, you talking over $20 000 territory, maybe 25-28g. Keep in mind everyone on here who swings their own spanners and buys sh1t cheap, that just isn't most people, add another 5-8k onto whatever it cost you guys for someone who gets a reputable workshop to screw this thing together. Now lets take a dead stock good condition manual RB25 front cut. On the same engine mounts you have, the whole lot drops straight in, and other than a good clutch for about $600, needs no mods. The factory injectors can be hiflowed to 780cc, and the factory rail and reg is fine. Add one of mine or leighs GT35 turbo kits with a .82 rear housing, a cooler, exhaust and computer, and your RB25 will make 400rwhp on 18psi of boost, full boost is at 4000rpm with the VCT working, and thats only 300rpm later than the 30, not to mention a stock 30 revs to about 6 and dies in the ass at 5, and the RB25 makes nice usable power to 7500rpm. I have supplied kits for and worked on at least 10-15 stock internal 25's that have made from 390rwhp to 440rwhp on 16-21psi of boost, all are still alive and going strong, and I personally can't see a better budget orientated way of getting a reliable, user friendly 11 second car for so little outlay. Sh1t, almost anyone with no mechanical skills could get the engine into the bay 6BOOST Edit, PS, When the engine does ever fail, everything is in place for the twin cam, just build a 30 bottom end, extend the dump pipe and drop it back in. Minimum fuss, more power, more torque, and you split a large $$ value job up into 2 small workable portions. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

what are you saying exactly? Quote: Most are well worn, and even reco, with nothing more than rings and bearings, still aren't a magical lump of steel to begin with. Don't get me wrong, there is no replacement for displacement, but we are talking botom of the food chain, bolt on type upgrades here.

You can build a Reliable daily driven RB25, with acceptable fuel economy, and over 300rwkws, for a lot less than you can do the same to an RB30. -Yes lag, but what kind of ill-informed person would use a big turbo for anything other than drag. -RB20- most underrated performance import motor- have a look at the FACTORY 480hp R31 GTSRs, with the inferior Redtop's smaller turbo, complicated variable throttle intake, and archaic injector and computer abilities. -There is an silver r32, powered by an RB20, with phenomenal response, that monsters GTRs around sandown. -Twin cam is newer technology. Nissan also used it in the late 60's in the KPGC10, so umm, when was single over head cam first used? -VVTi/vvt/vtec etc, twin cam, efi, turbocharged; now that is 80's technology! if you want to talk hybrids; 1jz head on 2jz- reliable, high horsepower/torque, engineering perfection. Orgasmic.

The stock basic form engine isn't magical in its perfromance, in fact you have to start doing some serious type mods to get more than 350rwhp out of on. Take for example Tempests car. It has a full rebuilt and balanced engine, rod bolts, forged pistons, mild port work, fairly decent sized camshaft, springs, rajab intake manifold, GT30 turbocharger, manifold, external gate, CDI ignition, and it makes 380rwhp on 20psi and pump fuel. A stock RB25 with one of my kits makes 400rwhp on 18 psi with a free flowing exhaust. Do i need to say more?? The RB25 is just an all round better engine. People repeat themselves over, and over, and over, and over..... about teh lack of torque with an RB25. HAve any of you people even driven a decently modified RB25?? I highly doubt it. This is where the whole internet speculation sh1t yet again creates a "theory" that is backed up with nothing more than peoples opinions. I challenge anyone to go for a drive in a well modified example and find its faults, as they have few. Like I said, if you want to compare figures, the RB25 makes full boost 200-300rpm later than the RB30 with a GT35 turbo, and makes power for an extra 1500rpm, easily, change to some 3.7 diff gears or even 3.9's and at the same road speed, the 25 would out accelerate and outpower the 30 with the same turbo and same boost, seeing as how its making another 80 flywheel hp. The 1J head flows around 210-215cfm inlet stock, and the 2J flows about 235cfm inlet stock. Ported, the gap is still similar. Who knows why people do it, other than convenience if they already had a big setup on a 1j and just want more capacity. 6BOOST

Go RB30 if i were you end of the day comes to how much money you have to be the quikest and you have to know the in's and out's of this game not just spending money on stuff thats really not needed. RB30 has already produced equal power to Twin Cam RB motors something to think about

6BOOST definitely has the right idea. Best bang for your buck, and by far the least trouble would be to drop in a bog stock RB25DET, (and gearbox) then modify that later with a turbo upgrade as finances allow. The only other option worth considering would be to fit the complete top half of an RB26DETT over an RB30 block. But to do that properly is just not worth what it would cost to do. You would be better off buying a whole complete Skyline GTR because then everything is already there. A few bolt on mods are all you need. Completely street legal too, and it will have some resale value.

that's what i was saying, in bolt on spec the rb25 is far better, highly modified and high powered the rb30 will offer better response on the same power levels full stop. Tempest's car 'only' makes 380rwhp but it is obvious that car was built for response not to win dyno comps. Reliability is only a matter of how well the car is screwed together and whether or not builder(s) skimped on the little things, stock for stock and unrebuilt though the rb25 is newer and more refined and hence, more reliable. I just don't feel that the rb20 has the sheer piston size to translate into enough torque down low to spool up a turbo big enough to make big power without being a lag box. And unlike the rb25, in stock bolt on form (cooler, exhaust etc for example) they are far less performers than the equivilant rb25 or even rb30, i feel that comparing rb20's with 25's and 30's is like comparing the 3.8 buick v6 to the chev ls1 and holden 304 respectively.

IE a twin cam (not that ive driven a rb26) should be a lot smoother to drive and much better power delivery

i own a standard rb25 in a skyline and a modified rb30 in my vl. My skyline goes great for a stock rb25 and like 6-boost said with one of his packages will produce 400hp which will aniliate my rb30 vl that makes 400hp aswell. To me i would personally choose the rb25 as they are better all round.

supra making less power? serious?!?! i had a TT supra eat my shorts!!!

you can't compare a supra and a vl turbo simply because they have the same displacenment, that's ridiculous. The 2JZ is probably one of the best 6 cylinder motors of all time, outperforming even the flagship RB, the 26.
