exactly, go for what works not what sounds better
i agree with above, nice compromise with sound and quality. but imo definetely 2.5. a guy i know had 3 inch on his, and yeah it was deep and burbly, but it was drone city, and in all honesty sounded unhealthy and ****, not to mention the power/seat of pants he lost, with a manual too!
i've got a 2.5 single with pacemakers on mine, it had a muffler and no resonator originally, sounded WAY too droney for my liking so i swapped the muffler for a hot dog, it keeps the sound managable when you're just cruising around, but barks a fair bit when you stand on it.
I like the sound, but that said, a mate had the same setup as mine but twin exhaust on his stock statesman, and it sounded like some sort of skiboat! I've read arguments for and against twin systems on non or mildy worked motors, but definitely go twin if all you want is the roar
On my calais vl 5.0l i've got advance headers, normal cat, and only one mufflerat 2 and a half ich and then straight out the back.
If you allso want some more sound get a gutted cat, thats what i tried.
but with all that it sits around the 90 desabells of sound.
Good luck any way

Canon's sound **** of V8's. There was a list on SC somewhere that said what exhaust size is good for what HP... anyone have it handy?
But, I would always go a twin exhaust over a single for a v8... even if it is that bit too large.. personal preference though.
I run a twin 2 1/4 with twin high flow cats to single 3in and it sounded pretty dam tough. especially at 70+kmh
Pity your not in melbourne coz im selling the the whole system.....
I'm running inch and three quater pacemaker extractors on VT heads into a dual three inch mandrel bent with straight through mufflers, high flow cats and a defilipo rear straight through muffler, dual all the way over a nine inch diff. very tight fit but way worth the hassle.......
Well I now own St33ly's Calais and am looking to do the exhaust soon. been quoted $1100 fitted for advance headers and 2.5" system, pretty sure that's with a muffler and resonator, will have to check as the old man enquired for me through a muffler bloke he knows well. Not sure if that includes a new cat.
The guy did say not to worry about Pacemakers as thier prices are a bit high these days, will look into that as they were my first preferrence. Genie was anotgher brand I was considering, as was Lukey but looks like they don't make them for the carby 8's, well I was just looking in a SC mag that did a comparison on who's got what and Lukey had none listed.
Edit: For now i have no plans to work the motor at all, maybe sort the compression as a lot of people have done by shaving the heads, and a cam at the most.
like others have said its always best to get an exhaust/extractors to give most performance gains, unless you have a standard system most upgraded exhaust systems will give you a nice sound. And if i were to put money on any set of extractors it would have to be the pacies, you will hear nothing but praise for them, just ask around. As they say you get what you pay for and with new car parts thats pretty much the case. And also just remember if you start changing things (especially your cam) other things will need to be upgraded (for example intake manifold) to get the full potential out of the mods you done. just a heads up
Thanks for the heads up on the other changes I'll need should I do the cam and heads, but they're just maybe's, and more likely for when the time comes to rebuild, if I decide to do that over going EFI. I've got a performance style air filter to put on, then will look at the exhaust and that's pretty much all I'm thinking of doing for the next 12 months or so. The car isn't a daily driver, I got it to slowly do up, without going too far from original, which it pretty much is now. Just a little more go and a nice note will be good.
Lol, well hopefully, doesn't take much to twist my arm. Depends on how things are when the time comes to pull the motor as to what gets done. I don't want a strip beast, but something with some balls wouldn't hurt on the street.
