Probably, but whats the point running slicks on a car that doesn't have an appropriate suspension setup?
For those interested, im currently protoyping adjustable top arms for the VL and other commo live axel diffs.
Im about 80% there.... is there anyone in melbourne with a quick enough car that would do some testing for me?

Not necessarily. And not if you cant get traction.
WTF u talkin about VLHERO, the bigger the tyre the better the traction, and if you can't get traction with a huge ass tyre, then there is something seriously wrong with your suspension setup.
Ari saw u out on the strip 2 weeks ago I think, gave u the the thumbs up but u didn't even give me one back. Haha nah jokin mate your car definatley has a whole lot left in it by the looks of it, be good to see when it cracks into the 9's!!
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Thats exactly what I'm saying. How many cars do you see with huge ass slicks and stock suspension?
you would be suprised how many do retain the stock suspension just a few minor things like new bushes or harder springs but no other mods an i know i fair few.

You gotta be kidding right?
There are many low 9 sec cars on stock suspension.... Yes they could work better with more $$'s thrown at them but the truth is they work pretty damn good for a factory setup!
The only weak problems with the factory setup is the Spring position which does not allow you to change the lower control arm with out a coil over setup. The other is the weak mounting points for the upper control arm. I have seen a 383 Vk run low 10s - high 9s with Stock springs and shocks pushing 500 - 600hp only mods where Rose joint arms up top and modified lower arms with rose joints i think there where 2 on the diff side and 1 large on up the front.
as for slicks what off set are the wheels and what width?
when it comes to setting up a tyre that really cant fit you need to play with offset and width. When i used racing slicks on my VC i had a 9 inch chaser with the off set set all the way to the out side. When i put Slicks on for drags the rims would need to have the width changes to 8 inch and the offset pushed in about 1/2 inch. But from memory it was a 26 x 8 or 9. I would get a wheel guy to weld a 8inch and 9 inch rim with out a center and then cut the center out of a 7 inch and then try to fit the tyre you want to the rims and just play around with different positions. that is how i got the right offset for the racing slicks.
Neil's Wheel's in sydney changes chaser widths.
yeh delt with them before i just fitted up a set of 28x9 on standard rear end and they fit fine and dont see them scrubbing as it clears everything the closest part was the lower controller arm abour 15mm gap side on

Longer footprint will provide more traction than a wider one.

Hey, this isnt ment to offend or anything but god some of your post really piss me off. I can name you about 7vl's that have cracked the 10's and about 3 that have gone into the 9sec bracket that still retain stock springs control arms and shockers....and they all used slicks. So let me get this strait, you wouldnt use slicks if you didnt have proper suspension setup? Put 2 VL turbos, both making the same amount of power, lets say 350hp at the wheels, both retaining STANDARD rear end, one is using street chasers and the other 28x9" slicks, whos gonna get more traction? i hope this answers your previous question.... i think ANYONE would prefer to use slicks over standard street tyres...

Well I thought that as a normal progression in modifying a car suspension would come before trying to do anything serious with it, clearly thats not always how it goes down. Thanks for that.
yeah i woulda thought if your spending enough to get yuour car into the 9-10 second brack you could upgrade ur suspension at least a little? lol
this thread was certainly a good read! always wondered about wat mods need to be done for some quicker/better times
are the advantages of slicks that great that you dont need to upgrade
anything?
With the rims i have (convo pros) i will need to shorten the diff each side by around 50mm. Does anyone know if i will still retain my standard shock mounts or will i have to go coil overs? And those aftermarket control arms pictured before, can they be used instead of boxing the original lower arms?
