its easy to say turbo this and turbo that but the legalitys will F##K you up, its easy on a vl ect, but you do somthing that was never turbo and its only a matter of time b4 you get reemed. i myself built a turbo 265 centura, buy the time it was all built and done and in the car, and spent $1,000's on dyno time to get it right owed me like 13k, made good power, but!!!ince the cops poped the hood and epa had a look almost cost me a lot more, ....... as for a vq runnung 15psi stock it can be done but will be stuffed in no time A9L rods dont like boost much i was doing a 308 turbo over the last few months, in a 71 hq, and could not find one workshop, that was fair on price to help out with tuff, draw through or blow through, is to hard to get tuned as with carbs and boost they allways run rich, then there is diffrent plugs and jets depending on how you want to drive the car that day, lpg was another way but no one can tune it, so its not that people with V8's dont consider it, more that its its expenceive, hard to fine people who know whats going on that dont want 300 an hour, no one will engineer it, ect ect, so its easy to read street machine and say yeah yeah sick, i dont have a budget of 100k to build an ilegal car sometimes man stuff is just to muc stuffin round. and the only way to get around rego is to turbo it after rego, and once you have made it turbo on the road lets see how long it stays on the road cos once you have been busted it all go's on the police data base as MODIFIED and everytime a cop pulls you over and punces in the rego he will pop the hook and cain ya. not to mention that in vic right now if you have a smash with an after market computer in your car there is no tac and car is clased as haveing no rego and paying off somone elses $30,0000 HOSPITAL BILL for the rest of my life is not an option, i guess its easy to build a quality car with no budget but ! its *** hard to do with a budget of say 10k from start to finished my 20c

This is one of those debates that can keep on goin for ages.. Why did i go a N/A V8, simple its the fact as thats what i wanted to go, thats what interests me, the fact that the motor is making power from simple atomopheric pressure. I also do know all about turbos. fuel injection etc etc, mite try it out one day

man can do what eva ya want n/a when its 70 to like 75mdl and why are ya guna get epa tested, if you keep your 8 quiet, ive had 10 turbo charged cars from datto's geminis, pulsars vl,s a turbo LJ torana, even valiant, ive also had 2 11sec torana's with 8's in them and from my experiance in being pulled over ect, ive been in way more SH*T with turbos than n/a stuff, i love my turbos and id love to have a turbo 8, but its just not that easy. so in saying that sinister lets see you build one or at lest reserch it there is people at every turn to stuff you up its easy to talk about it man but you wont see many street cars with turbo 8s and the ones you do dont come out often, im not knocking ya tho mate ya have a valid point, but geting epa tests and heaps of yellow stickers off is something i can do without but if ya do build a turbo 8 thats dont cost 20k and dont hand granade in 3 months from useing cheep parts that runs 20+ pounds let me know id be interested in a look

My grumpy, rough NA car was my daily for a very long time and if i had the choice between driving a rough NA all the time or a smooth turbocharged V8, i will choose the latter, no questions asked. The way you seem to make out a turbo 8, is some 1000hp+ monster that doesn't come out all the time. The truth is, it is possibly cheaper to build a 600hp turbo 8 than what it will cost to build a reliable 600hp NA and a 600hp turbo 8 will be a pleasure to drive on the street, be reliable, has the potential for more and will not draw attention whatsover, unless the owner chooses too. To make that sort of streetable power, there is no need to run 20psi+ and it definately won't cost $20K+ to build. For around $2K it is possible to buy a 355 bottom end with forgies (probably abit less if it was on offset ground factory crank), this will handle 700hp with ease. Get a set of VN heads, with a nice tidy up is all that is needed and a custom hydraulic cam. There is no need to get custom exhaust manifolds made up as it has be proven that for a street setup factory cast manifolds will work just fine (Jake edwards makes over 1000rwhp with factory manifolds). Then get a harrop, torque-power, or even a redline manifold if you don't wan't it up too high with a modified carb and a large non roller turbo which can be bought for $1500 and can support up too 1000hp. The complete motor can be done for under $10K (or maybe slightly more, depending who is doing it) and will only need to run 10-15psi to make large numbers. And it will do so with ease by revving to only around 6500rpm, compared to a rough NA motor that needs to be spun to over 7000rpm to make power. Of course if we are talking about building a turbo 8 to make 1000hp+, the costs involved is far greater. But we are talking about 600hp street cars which is piss easy to make power with a V8. As far as EPA and legalities go, i don't think a single hi comp fuel guzzling NA motor will be legal. Again, if you want to draw attention to yourself by putting 20" rims, some stupid bright paint etc, you will get pulled over even if it was a camira.

have you ever yourself not street machine mag or some performance shop tried to get a carbie to suport 15psi boost? they have jets that need to flow enough fuel to not lean out at 15psi, what happens when its not on boost? it floods, puddles up with fuel coughs and splutters when you take off from the lights. idle wont be smooth!!!! and i know that they will make more power than most n/a 8,s no one disputes that, and i wana see pics of ya 500HP 372 VL ................

Careful what you say about carbies rununxt. They do work in a blow through application if modified correctly. Check out www.turbomustangs.com (http://www.turbomustangs.com) There is thousands of examples of turbo cars with carbys that DO work! Jets are no different to injectors, you still need a rising rate fuel reg if adding boost.

I too spend quite abit of time on that forum and there are ALOT of regularly street driven cars with carbs and do so with great success. i know they work man, i had mine at bob fisher being modded after spending almost, 800 bucks on a special order blow through holley, but it was never right, and im not saying it wont work Quote: Originally Posted by ELA-RE That's right. a 304 has the potential to make 580hp revving it to only 6200 running 10psi.. http://www.turbofast.com.au/TFmatch.html reckons just a little gt30 will suffice with a 1.06 a/r. so you've got big power with low boost and low revs, thats reliability to me. no need for 20psi, like said we're not talking a horsepower hero here

All you are going to see is a holden engine with a harrop manifold and carb. When it comes to a carby street engine, they are pretty boring to look at. And yes, i am not friendly. For some strange reason, people seem to think that when a turbo and V8 are matched together, it has to be some mega HP monster And using that website, an 8.0L revving to 12000rpm will make 3356hp with 34psi on pump fuel Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

each to their own. i had a solid 355 stroker with harrop and all that stuff made 280kw at the wheels. was fine to drive around. though the next motor i will build will most likely be turbo. id like to see the second hand 355 bought for 2000 with forgies hold boost and 600hp for any length of time.

SRPs can be bought for around $600-$700 if you shop around, Scat H beams around $500-$600 and COME crank for $900. So as i said, for around $2k you can buy a 355 bottom end that can handle enough boost to make a considerable amount of power. Or an even cheaper option would be to buy the Eagle 355 cranks for $650 for low boost applications. So as you can see, there is no need to spend over $10K for turbo 8 (carby) to make a good, reliable 600hp or so. And let's face it, for a regularly or daily driven street car, that amount of power is more than enough.

ok i agree so here is what i propose to you fellas, if you guys can hook me up with the right people to tune a blow through 8 i will put deposit on the garrett gt4088 monday & will continue with the engine i was building reason i gave up no one had a *** clue what to do with it, and UNS10 what kind of riseing rate reg are you talkin about and efi type or is there a carbie version of that cheers

Mate, you can't go past Jake's Performance in canberra, he is the guru for blow through V8s. He actually went from carby, to injection and now back to carby again on his 1000hp+ torana. As for the regs, they are a rising rate carby reg. Mallory, Aeromotive and Racepumps make these regs.

tell us about the combo u wanna use??? like we're trying to emphasise.. theres seriously no need to go nuts with top parts, just get decent gear to hold together basically... its not the top end thats going to make power its the snail! jakes car is the whole car that sparked up this whole idea for me ages ago, if u know what ur reading and u look at the parts used in his 800rwhp 8 second torana its amazing how simple and cheap it is.

I agree that in Australia that Jake is the man to talk to. There's a new guy on here that showed up the other night named Mega HP. He built a blow through 355. He could probably give you some good advise. I can't stress it enough that you really need to spend some time over at turbomustangs reading the carburettor and boost section of the forums. There is some stickys that are a must read! You will find that the majority of people are using an Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump with an Aeromotive 13202 fuel pressure reg. It is a rising rate reg for use with a carb. You could also use the 13204 as it would be cheaper. http://www.aeromotiveinc.com/listing.php?cat=2 http://www.turbomustangs.com/smf/index.php?board=13.0 Hope this helps

I would like to come up alongside one of these 550+hp single turboed cars, and see what there really made of, alot of people claim its easy and its not that expensive etc yet look how long jake has been doing it for and also the r&d thats gone into his mastermind, its the old story if its that cheap and easy to do we would all have 8 sec street cars.

Again, why do so many people have the misconception that a turbo 8 has to be an 8sec car. We brought up Jake as he knows his blow through setups, that's all. What we are saying is a mild setup making 600hp or so. Even look at the single turbo LS1 kits. The GenT1000 makes 473rwkw....thats around 600hp@wheels!!! And that's from an internally standard engine. Even an LS1 to make that much power the NA route will cost more, have worse fuel economy and be alot less streetable. Even the slightly cheaper twin turbo kits for LS1s are capable of pushing a full weight VX commodore to mid 10sec passes. So here you have a 10sec 1700kg barge, that drives like a stocker and sounds like a stocker. There was a feature in Performance Buildups or maybe Zoom awhile ago of a Skyline i think, with a twin turbo, blow through 308. From memory, it still had the B cast heads, factory manifold, modified holley, factory bottom end and ran 10.9. That alone shows the capabalities of a stock 308 and a single turbo setup woul dbe a cheaper option again. Add say a couple of grand to a decent bottom end and you will have a stock stroke 308 capable of running 10s all day every day and you can drive it to the local RSL club and all the oldies wouldn't even look twice. Actually, i have just found the engine bay pic of the nissan........

Im not saying that every turboed 8 has to make 1000hp or run 8s, but what im saying is that its not as easy as you guys percieve! and again i say if it was that easy and cheap everyone would have a turbo or some form of forced induction, its funny how you throw dollar figures around as to what it costs for bottom end parts, yet you forget the biggest cost of engine machining and engine assembly, and then theres added costs that arnt thrown up in the air being studs, oringing, copper gaskets etc etc, hence why in my first post i said alot of guys out there just cant afford to have one built by a shop, and we are just lucky enough to have the tools, equipment, and know how behind it to actually do it ourself, and the cost of a shop to do it over just parts, would be almost tripple the price cheers trent
